Commentary

The winner's trophy presented to Shakib Al Hasan. Time for the players to pose for a few photographs with the trophy. It was a great game and credit goes to Ireland for keeping Bangladesh at bay for a considerable span of time. The two teams will head to England for a three-match ODI series early next month. Bangladesh was the deserved winner in the ODI series. Ireland only managed a solitary win during the tour but this is a learning curve for them and they will hope that the tour teaches them how to take on top-class opposition. Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh captain): I mean normally we don't play in these sort of wickets. Credit to Ireland. They fought really well, tried hard. Taijul bowled brilliantly and all the fast bowlers chipped in. There are lot of areas where we can improve especially in the Test format. We tried to experiment with a few things in this match. Some paid off, some didn't. The wicket suited us the way we wanted to bat. We were looking to change our approach and we did that successfully. I won’t say it was an ideal Test wicket but was very good to bat on.

Mushfiqur Rahim (Player of the Match): I really enjoyed a lot. The team's victory is the most important. Credit to Ireland they batted really well in the second innings. It was a flat deck with not much for spinners. I think the intent is very important in the short run chases. Litton's approach and partnership with Tamim was crucial because they could have put us under pressure with early wickets. Credit to the bowlers, picking up 20 wickets on a flat deck is never an easy job.

Andrew Balbirnie (Ireland Captain): We showed a lot of grit, especially yesterday. I think we all enjoyed playing test cricket again, the ebbs and the flows of the game. One minute you are up, the next minute down. Enough of learning for us. When you win the toss in these conditions, you need to put up a big score and occupy the crease for long. So many things to be happy about. Andy had a great game with the ball. Lorcan with the century and Harry with back-to-back fifties. We really loved the trip to Bangladdesh, we were well looked after and enjoyed our stay here. Hopefully we will be back soon.

Despite Ireland’s rearguard action on Day 4 of the Test match, it was Bangladesh who returned home triumphant by 7 wickets. Ireland who had lost 8 wickets coming to Day 5 couldn’t add much to their overnight tally, setting Bangladesh a target of 138 runs. Litton Das was promoted up the order and he didn’t disappoint.

The opening duo of Litton and Tamim started off superbly. While Litton batted as if he was playing a white-ball match, Tamim was a bit more circumspect. Litton raced off to a 19-ball 23 which included 3 fours and a six before his departure. Najmul Hossain Shanto also fell early but still the target was well within reach.

Rahim was the next man in and he settled the nerves with a flurry of boundaries just before lunch. Tamim batted cautiously but didn't fail to latch onto any loose deliveries. It was a rank-long hop from Ben White that brought about his downfall with the hosts just within touching distance of the victory target.

From there on, it was Mominul, the former Teest skipper in the company of Rahim who took Bangladesh over the finish line. He struck some delightful shots and remained unbeaten on 20. Rahim struck the winning runs and also reached a well-deserved half-century. Ireland fought hard but was beaten by a better team on display.

They were down and out early on Day 4 but an inspired century from Lorcan Tucker and his partnership with Andy McBrine who scored 72 turned the game on its head. Tottering at 123/6, Ireland needed a partnership desperately and that is when the duo defied all the odds and batted exceedingly well.

Ireland couldn't quite capitalise on winning the toss and was bowled out for 214 in their first innings on Day 1. Taijul Islam wreaked havoc and returned with a five-wicket haul. Bangladesh managed to secure a big lead of 150 runs courtesy of a stupendous century from Mushfiqur Rahim and a wonderful 80 off from Shakib Al Hasan.

Ireland faced an uphill task and their backs were down to the wall when they lost 6 wickets, still needing 27 more runs to make Bangladesh bat again. A sensational partnership ensured that Ireland clawed their way back into the game but in the end, the target of 138 didn't prove to be enough. Who knows, fifty more runs would have this a more fascinating contest.

That's it. Bangladesh win by 7 wickets. Aleem Dar being given a guard of honor by both teams. This is the very least he deserved. One of the very best of all time. Stood in 145 Test matches and would go down in the history as one of the most decorated umpires.
