Commentary

This is such a massive win for Bangladesh. They were helped by the toss and favorable conditions but that can't discount the kind of consistent effort they put in with the ball. There are some issues with their batting still but New Zealand have bigger problems. The visitors need to sort out their bowling consistency. They'll definitely take some lessons from this and Bangladesh need to be wary of a big performance in Mirpur. For now, that's all for the coverage, folks! Najmul Hossain Shanto (Bangladesh captain): I think the credit goes to all the players - Taijul, Naeem, Shoriful and Miraz especially. As you said, everyone enjoyed this match. We don't think about the result and just follow the process. The bowlers did a great job but if the batters take more responsibility in the next Test, it'll help us win. Thank you for the cricket board to give me the opportunity in the white-ball team but I am currently focussed on the next Test and everyone in the team is looking forward to that as well.

Taijul Islam has been adjudged the Player of the Match! Here is what he has to say.

Taijul: I am really happy to represent my country in this fashion! To produce a match-winning bowling performance is special for me. We were of the opinion that things were under our control. So, we had the belief that if we keep things tight, with runs in the bank, it won't get any easier for the opposition batters. We were pretty relentless from both ends and all the bowlers stepped up to the place. Winning the first game in a 2-match series is always advantageous, that gives us a lot of confidence now!

Tim Southee (New Zealand captain): Very disappointing, but, credit to Bangladesh for playing so well! As a bowling group, we just need to build more pressure. As a batting group, we need a few more partnerships. It was a pretty good wicket, there was turn on offer but that was always expected anyway. We have a couple of days to get our acts together and regroup. Everyone is striving to keep the improvement going and we will come up with it in the next match hopefully. The lower order has done well with the bat, it is something which is required and good for us to have the resources down there.

This is a win that will be etched in the Bangladesh Test history for a long time. New Zealand were in the game for a couple of innings but after that the hosts were in their groove and just never left dominating the Test. Hasan Joy's 84 in the first innings set-up the Test for Bangladesh, even though the hosts threw most other wickets away against Glenn Phillips.

Kane Williamson starred in the second innings in an exhibition of playing spin in the subcontinent. Bangladeshi bowlers continued to attack the stumps which resulted in regular wickets but Williamson's knock and cameos from Mitchell, Phillips and Southee helped the visitors take a slender lead.

Day 3 and the third innings was where Bangladesh came to their own. New Zealand threw everything at them but Shanto was at his best, finding the right balls to attack and always keeping the pressure on the bowlers. Early top-order wickets would have given New Zealand some home but the middle-order just pushed them out of the game.

The visitors never really got going in the fourth innings against the beast of Taijul Islam. The excellent pitch for Test cricket took more and more turn and he grew in stature with his variations of bounce and pace. New Zealand also looked more intent on trying and securing a draw which allowed Bangladesh the comfort to attack.

Mitchell put up a big, big fight but as wickets fell from the other end, the visitors came to Day 5 with a big task on their hand. Mitchell continued from where he left but finally fell to the shot that gave him all the success - the sweep. Sodhi was defiant and Southee looked to attack but two balls had their names on it and Taijul capped off the Test with a brilliant six-fer!

71.1 Taijul Islam to Ish Sodhi, AND THAT WILL BE THAT! TAIJUL GETS 10 WICKETS FOR THE MATCH! BANGLADESH WIN THE TEST! Good length ball on middle-and-off. It turns slowly off the surface and squares up Sodhi a touch. He goes back to defend but taps it off the shoulder of the blade. The ball hangs a bit in the air and silly mid-off then comes into play to pick up the simplest of catches!
