That brings us to the end of our coverage of the 2nd of three ODIs between these two sides. New Zealand will be heavily buoyed by this performance ahead of the world cup - they've had plenty of boxes ticked in the matter of a completed game! Bangladesh won't be too flustered by the middle-order capitulation, if anything, it served as a learning curve for some of the youngsters. Both teams will meet each other at this very venue on Tuesday for the 3rd ODI. Do keep an eye on our tabs for our coverage of the same, and of course, a whole lot more! This is Rajarshi, signing off on behalf of Lavil. See you later!
Lockie Ferguson (New Zealand captain): Excellent win by the boys, it started off from our batters. The way Henry and Tom Blundell batted, they soaked up a lot of pressure. Clearly, Bangladesh bowled well, they soaked a lot of pressure on a tough wicket, which was nice. The way Ish bowled today was exceptional, certainly a go-to guy for me today. Nice to see him have all the success after all the hard work he's done. Everyone in the batting order soakes up some pressure having gone out there, and looked to build a foundation. Nice to see Ish get some runs as well. Our field was exceptional as well, it was an all-round performance from us today.
Ish Sodhi is the Player Of The Match! Here's what he has to say: Really good day, coming off with a win where we haven't done well historically, it's nice to walk away with a win. Nice from Litton to call me back after the Mankad, I thought it was an awesome gesture by him. We thought the wicket would start turning later in the day, which is why we wanted to bat first. Fortunately, that was the case. Both Ravindra and McConchie got side spin. Playing ODI cricket as much as we can going into the World Cup is awesome.
Litton Das (Bangladesh captain): Before 40 overs, we were quite in the game. Their lower order did well. We bowled well in the first innings but our batting was not up to the mark. The lower order put in a good score and put 40-50 runs extra. The two senior members played really well, the top order wasn't up to the mark and if anyone had got an 80 or 100 it could've been easier.
Match summary:
New Zealand win by 86 runs
Tom Blundell 68(66) | Ish Sodhi 6/39 (10) Mahmudullah Riyad 49(76) | Mahedi Hasan 3/45 (10)
Ish Sodhi has taken hold of the match ball, and now poses for the cameras with it. Bangladesh were going along nicely with proceedings in the run-chase today, only until he came on to bowl. While some of the shots played for the dismissals were questionable, the fact that Sodhi proved to be really tough to pick off the hand, especially his wrong-uns, simply cannot be slept on. Bangladesh were in the hunt on occasions, particularly when Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah Riyad played themselves in, but both of them perished to rather agricultural shots.
Both the Bangla openers adopted a cautious approach, setting out to chase a target of 255. Tamim and Litton were really watchful against the swing and bounce from Trent Boult and Kyle Jamieson early on. While both the New Zealand opening bowlers delivered a few peaches to beat the bat, the opening breakthrough was refusing to come for them. That was until Litton Das ran out of patience and flashed at a short, wide one from Jamieson, and was held by Ravindra at third man.
Tanzid Hasan Tamim impressed for a brief while, but the Ish Sodhi show was on display post that. Tanzid tried to repeat the same shot that brought him a boundary early in the second over from the leggie, but holed out to mid off. Soumya Sarkar and Towhid Hridoy then failed to read the googly and departed one after another, and from then on, the onus was on Tamim to navigate the run-chase.
The veteran Bangladesh opener was doing a great job in keeping the hosts in the game, but every once in a while, he'd attempt a cheeky lap or a reverse and get away with it. That was until the second ball of the 19th over - Tamim premeditated a paddle sweep off Sodhi, and was brilliantly held by Blundell behind the stumps. With the top-half of the batting order blown away, Mahmudullah then looked to keep things going along with Mahedi Hasan. The veteran Bangladesh finisher took over from Tamim, and proceeded to bring the equation down by keeping the score ticking along nicely.
A rather innocuous long hop down leg from Cole McConchie was what accounted for Mahmudullah, as he looked to up the ante. The game was always going to be New Zealand's from then on - Nasum Ahmed had his share of fun, tonking Boult and Sodhi for sixes, but New Zealand mopped the Bangladesh tail up with 9 overs left in the innings. Stay tuned for the post-match presentations...
