Commentary

We bid good bye to the Bay Oval, but not before witnessing a match fit for a tournament like the World Cup! Both teams were in with the chance to win off the last over of the match, and it was Stafanie Taylor's West Indies Women who were able to hold their nerves and get the better of Nigar Sultana Joty's Bangladesh Women. Up next, it will be India taking on Australia tomorrow, with Mithali Raj's team in a spot of bother after their batting performances against England and New Zealand. The job does not get any easier for them as they lock horns with the best team in the competition so far. But India are known to win the big matches, so stay tuned to Sportskeeda as we bring you the mouth-watering contest from Auckland, live! It was the last match of the World Cup at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, and while many were expecting an early finish to the game after the 1st innings, the 2nd innings revealed that was far from true, as the West Indies pulled off a stunning win over Bangladesh to keep their semi-final hopes well and truly alive!

Shemaine Campbelle's effort with the bat was the start of the West Indian resurrection, as those 53 unbeaten runs proved to be the difference in the end between the sides.

Once again, it was Hayley Matthews who started the fall of wickets for the West Indies, picking up a wicket of her very first over, the first of the 2nd innings incidentally, and made sure that it would not be an easy chase for Bangladesh. She then followed it up with another wicket and both openers were back in the pavilion.

Then came a decent partnership between Bangladesh's best batter Fargana Hoque Pinky and their captain Nigar Sultana Joty, that was a little bit slow, but was doing what was needed, until a sweep shot too many, to a relatively fuller delivery from leg-spinner Afy Fletcher, got rid of Pinky and threw open the game, as the leg-spinner got two more Bangladeshi batters out in quick succession and put her team on the driver's seat.

Hayley Matthews then came back to bowl her remaining two overs, which also meant that she would take tow more wickets, and dent Bangladesh further.

The spin trio of Matthews, Fletcher and Karishma Ramharack took 7 wickets and gave away only 59 runs in 30 overs combined. There was no doubt that spin was to play a big part and these three certainly proved that.

But Salma Khatun and Nahida Akter were in no mood to give up, as they were sensible enough, as well as, opportunistic enough to keep their wickets intact while picking up runs that were precious. Jahanara Alam's boundary too helped Bangladesh inch closer to the target.

Just when things started to look a little bit out of the West Indies' control, in stepped Stafanie Taylor to the bowling crease, took responsibility, and bowled some important and successful overs of off-spin from round the wicket. She took 3 wickets, giving away only 29 runs and got her 150th ODI scalp in the process. The best part of it was the final wicket of Fariha Trisna in the last over with the match hanging in the balance.

Deandra Dottin with the changes of pace and Aaliyah Alleyne with her medium pace also supported their captain in the last 10 overs of the Bangladesh innings.

Bangladesh were guilty of not rotating strike on a regular basis and making it difficult for themselves to get going when the bowling was good from the spinners. They lacked the shots necessary to both release the pressure and find the gaps. But on the whole, they gave a terrific account of themselves once again. They look a team that is only getting better with every outing.

Shamilia Connell had to be treated on the field by the medical staff at the ground for a serious issue she sustained suddenly. Later on, her captain revealed that she is feeling better and should come through all the problems that troubled her.

West Indies Women now are 3rd on the table with 3 wins out of 5, while Bangladesh Women are 7th, even after impressive performances from their 4 matches.

West Indies Women captain, Stafanie Taylor: Shamilia is stable now. When it happened, it was sad to see her go down but we regrouped and finally managed to get the job done. We have to be consistent with the bat, that is the order of the tournament. We need better batting efforts. Afy was brilliant, she has worked really hard at the nets and it is good to see her hit her straps. Our batting is the concern, so we have to be clear to ourselves about getting better in that department.

Bangladesh Women captain, Nigar Sultana Joty: It was a very close match. It was incredible the way our bowlers bowled and took us to a winning position but our batting let us down, so we have to get that sorted for the next match. We have a lot of positives to take from here, and with more matches like these, we will gain the kind of experience and exposure needed to win.

Hayley Matthews (POTM for 4/15 in 10 overs): Obviously a bit worried about Connell going down on the field, we all know she is a fight and she will be back strong. We didn't have enough runs on the board, we needed to create something with the ball in hand. The spinners bowled well as we all contained the batters really well not allowing them to take the easy runs. We played many ODIs in 2021 and that has helped up to keep up with the pressure situations. Over the past couple of months, the coaching staff has instilled confidence in all the players and they have worked really hard.
