Alright then. That brings the curtains down on this contest. Gujarat will have one eye on that final on their home ground, but that route will go through Kolkata, where they play the first half of the playoffs. Will the Lucknow Super Giants join them tonight? KL Rahul's men are in action against the Rajasthan Royals, who themselves are looking to book their playoff spot with a win. This one's got all the makings of a classic at the Brabourne Stadium. You can just switch tabs to catch all the live action from that contest. Until next time, this is the duo of Pratyush and Bala, signing off. Have a fun Sunday, y'all. See ya!
Wriddhiman Saha is the Player of the Match: I have been playing for so long but this setup takes care of the group. I didn't play the initial games but I executed my plans when I got a chance. We were not chasing a big target, so I took my chances in the powerplay. After that, there was no need to take chances as the required rate was under six. We saw when we were bowling that the odd ball stopped in the surface. So, I thought of taking my chances initially before taking it easy. My role in the team is to play my natural game in the first six overs. After that, my strengths are to be backed, be it playing the sweep or charging down the pitch. That's the role I have to play and I'm happy to play it.
Hardik Pandya (Gujarat Titans captain): You don't get extra points for finishing games early, so it is important to win and get the two points. (On his captaincy) I did alright. Having played previously played in a franchise where a lot of responsibility was given to the players, it's something I've been accustomed to. I have enjoyed the responsibility and it has helped me grow. Doing what I have done in the past has helped as well. Ashu pa (Ashish Nehra) and I, we have very similar mindsets. We connect without saying much. We'll see if any player requires rest, otherwise, we need to keep the momentum going. The core group needs to be intact. If fast bowlers need rest, we'll be happy to rotate otherwise it'll stay the same.
MS Dhoni (captain, CSK): Batting first wasn't a very good idea. It was tough to hit, the ball wasn't coming on. It was much better in the second half. Bit more runs in the middle overs would have been better. Sai bowled well. We could have pushed Shivam up the order, but that would have defeated the purpose of having Jaggi in the side. Had it been earlier in the tournament, it would have been a tactical move to have Shivam in. He is an excellent death bowler, much like (Lasith) Malinga. With that slingy action, he has got much more margin of error is slim. Even if he commits an error of one yard or so, it won't get up and come on to the bat. With that extra second to watch the ball, it will be difficult to hit him consistently. We will look to give people enough time in the middle. It's easy to think about wanting to win one more game, get two more points, but we want to give chances to the players. But it's not like we are fielding a lop-sided team. We are trying to feature a good XI and will look to do that in the coming games also.
Gujarat Titans won by 7 wickets.
Wriddhiman Saha - 67* (57) | Mohammed Shami - 2/19. Ruturaj Gaikwad - 53 (49) | Matheesha Pathirana - 2/24.
Not too many people gave them a chance at the start of the tournament but the Gujarat Titans have sealed the top-two spot and will be playing the Qualifier One in Kolkata. Their juggernaut rolls on as they brush aside the defending champions on their way to another comprehensive victory.
After the bowlers set it up with Shami leading from the front in an exceptional performance alongside Sai Kishore, Wriddhiman Saha took it upon himself to wrap up the proceedings for his side. The opener got off to a flier this evening and took responsibility to finish off the innings which threatened to get a bit tricky in the middle.
Matheesha Pathirana, with his slingy action, was the standout positive for the Super Kings. Solanki with his leg-spin held his own as well, but with such a low target to defend, the bowlers didn't have the freedom to express themselves and keep it pretty defensive throughout.
A walk in the park in the end for Gujarat. Stick around to hear what the two captains have to say.
