Commentary

An inspiring performance from the West Indies have put them in the semifinals of the Women's T20 World Cup for the first time since 2018. They would be locking horns with New Zealand on October 18th in the second semifinal. Before that, we will see last time's finalists go up against each other in the first semifinal on October 17th.

Spare a thought for England, who did most things right in the lead up to this match and had a bit of a nightmare tonight. Well, that is how these tournaments work sometimes. Haley Matthews (West Indies Captain): Pretty good feeling. Incredibly proud of the group. We did our jobs with the ball and then, to put up a performance like that with the bat! Qiana was fantastic. When we were batting it slid on a bit more. We backed ourselves to chase down whatever target was put on the board. We will probably take a day-off tomorrow and then we are back on. We haven't won the World Cup yet. Every game from now on, we need to be switched on. It feels like we are peaking at that right time, so hopefully we can be even better in the semifinals.

Heather Knight (England Women captain): (First Thoughts) Frustrated! It was bad timing for me, but credit to the West Indies! We missed our chances but Hayley and her team were better. (On the 1st innings score) I think we were close to where we wanted to be at the mid-innings break but then, the partnership between Hayley and Qiana took it away from us. (On England's campaign) We played some really good cricket in this tournament, but one slip-up ends it really in a tough group like this! (On her injury scare) I'm okay now, but disappointed of course!

Qiana Joseph (Player of the Match, 52 runs off 38 balls): Hayley Matthews just told me to back myself and go after the bowling with full confidence. I was aggressive to begin with and I carried that aggression through. I like the competition and like to be challenged, and that brings the best out of me. I am really happy and thankful to my teammates! This semi-final slot means a lot to us!

Coming into this game, West Indies had not beaten England in a women's T20I for over 13 matches in last 6 years. In fact, their last victory over them away from home had come more than a decade ago. But on the evening when it mattered the most, the team from the Caribbean punched above their weight to (in many ways, literally) knock-out the opposition.

They were even sans Stefanie Taylor today. But the senior pros stepped up. Dottin was like a live-wire in the field. Matthews led from the front contributing in all departments. But it was Qiana Joseph, who stole the spotlight with her whirlwind knock of 52 in just 38 balls. She was that out of the syllabus question that had the opposition in a fix.

Though, England had themselves to blame. You don't win too many matches after dropping 5 catches. Their start with the bat was ordinary and their bowlers looked clueless in front of the onslaught that Joseph and Matthews put on. The injury to Knight didn't help them. Sciver-Brunt was the only bright spec, but alas, a single player can only carry you so far.
