Commentary

Right then. That's a wrap from this contest. Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans have kicked off their new journeys in this tournament. Hardik Pandya's Titans have their first points in the bag with a memorable win, at the expense of his best mates' side, the Lucknow Super Giants. New sides, new formats, but the same old IPL thrill, as always. It was another memorable encounter with the local players stepping upto the plate and impressing on the big stage. Mohammed Shami (Player of the match): (On the first ball) We had warmed up nicely. It was the first game for us and we wanted a good start. The only thing in mind was to bowl at a good Test match length in these conditions. That's the best line target when there's some assistance. Especially when you're releasing the ball so well. You just know it. I've worked on this for a long time. People say it's god's gift but that's not all. My main target against a leftie is to come around the wicket and cause trouble with the angle. If he was comfortable with that, I would have switched over the wicket again. (On asking for the fourth over) Hardik asked me if I want the fourth over. I said no, let's keep one in the bank. Don't have to get too excited, it's a long game. Touch wood, it's a good start. Long may it go on.

Hardik Pandya (Gujarat Titans): This was the right game for us to learn. Happy that we ended up on the right side. (On Shami's spell) He is known for that. The kind of seam position he balls can be awkward. He got off us to a great start. Yeah, mostly. I want to take some more responsibility for my batting and make sure the guys around can play freely. We've spoken about winning as a team. The contributions we had today were good to see. That worked well for us. (On giving Shami a fourth over) It was quite humid, so I wasn't thinking of that. (Abhinav Manohar) Some talent to look at. He's got some serious ball-striking ability and you'll here a lot more positive things about him in the time to come. (On Krunal getting him out) It's all good in the house. It would have pinched me if we lost the game but since we've ended up on the winning side, I don't mind it.

Rahul Tewatia (Gujarat Titans): The wicket was really good that when Miller and I were in the middle, we spoke about taking it deep. After the timeout, I told him that I will take my chances since the leg-side boundary was short. We needed a big over and luckily it came our way. After that reverse-sweep six I think his thought process might have been to use the longer leg-side boundary. But I had to go for it that over too and select the right ball and play my shots. During our camp, I saw Abhinav bat - he's a clean striker and has that X-factor. I had the trust that he will come out and play his shots straightaway. To play such confident shots in your first game is brilliant. I knew he's a main batter and is a hard-hitter. I knew that even if he had the strike he will play the big shots and that's what he did. In the camp we did, the environment is cool - it's not as though we're having long sessions but we're having quality sessions. Ashish bhai (Nehra) is keeping the environment happy. I always want to bowl but the way Shami bhai started it was seaming around. Our medium pacers then did a good job so I wasn't required.

KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants Captain): Phenomenal game. What a way to start a campaign. Obviously starting a game like that with the bat wasn't ideal but the way we came back was brilliant. It gives our top-order a lot of freedom and we knew that at the Wankhede, the new ball will do something up front. Something to learn for us there. Couldn't have started the campaign in a better way - obviously the win would have been nice. Sometimes you have to give it to the quality of the bowler - we know Shami has done this with the red ball but he did it with the white ball as well. He is dangerous. I didn't think he would bowl that well but Shami was excellent. If you get a start like that you are always behind the game but the way we finished and batted in the second half was brilliant. Even with the ball we were good until the 14th or 15th over. I don't want to give this as an excuse but it gets really tough to grip the ball with the dew. We have to go back and practice with the wet ball. We executed most of our plans and bowled well but it gets difficult with the wet ball. Credit to Tewatia and Abhinav as well in the end to hold their nerve and hit it in the gap. Good end for them but good learning for us. (On Ayush Badoni) He's Baby AB for us. He's just been phenomenal - from the first day I walked into the camp, the way he was batting was unbelievable. The shots he hit are so clean for a little boy and can play 360 degrees. You need young guys like that to come into the team. So happy for AB and for him to walk in at that stage and play that knock was high pressure for him. He's beaten the pressure and played so well - it will give him and us a lot of confidence. Hopefully he can carry the momentum and create the same damage going forward as well.

Gujarat Titans - 161/5 in 19.4 overs (Rahul Tewatia 40* in 24, Dushmantha Chameera 2/22) beat the Lucknow Super Giants (Deepak Hooda 55 in 41, Mohammed Shami 3/25) by 5 wickets.

A bit of history scripted as the two new franchises get their IPL journey underway. It was an exciting contest that went down to the wire, with its share of twists and turns. Gujarat Titans get off to a winning start with Rahul Tewatia pulling off a Tewatia, getting his side over the line in a tricky run chase.

After an excellent performance from their bowling unit to restrict the Super Giants to an under-par total, the Titans' top-order had a bit of a wobble themselves. Tottering at 15-2, Hardik and Wade led the rebuilding before being dragged back by the LSG spinners. Bishnoi, Krunal and Hooda were all splendid in their execution in the middle overs but struggled with the dew setting in.

The decision to stick with Hooda for his third over proved to be the costly one that turned the tide of this contest. 22 runs from that one and it was the domino effect since. Miller and Tewatia led the comeback, with Manohar applying the finishing touches to seal the deal for their side.

Gujarat Titans get their campaign off to a winning start with a memorable victory. They'll be delighted with their first outing. Not so much for the Lucknow Super Giants. A few positives to take for them in this contest but there will be no panic stations. Not yet, anyway! Stick around to hear what the captains have to say and the presentation.

19.4 Avesh Khan to Rahul Tewatia, FOUR! RAHUL PULLS OFF A TEWATIA AGAIN! Look at how much it means to him! In the slot outside off and he gets forward to slice it over the covers. Nobody can come within touching distance as it races towards the ropes to take the Titans past the finish line. For their debuts, both these teams have put on quite a show alright! What a contest we've witnessed and in the end, Gujarat Titans hold their nerve and beat Lucknow Super Giants by 5 wickets with 2 deliveries to spare!

19.3 Avesh Khan to Abhinav Manohar, dug short and following the batter on leg stump, Abhinav gets into a tangle but gets bat on his pull over fine leg. The fielder picks up to his right in the deep so a single it shall be.

Abhinav Manohar! That is how you announce yourself on the big stage! It's his first taste of the IPL. Look what he's gone and done! Just 3 needed in 4 now.

19.2 Avesh Khan to Abhinav Manohar, FOUR MORE! ABHINAV MANOHAR! It's a leg-cutter on a good length outside off, Abhinav picks the bones out of it and smears it with all might as he gets forward and sends it butchering through the covers. On the up and it rockets to the fence for four more!

It's one of those contentious calls that could decide the game. Six, if you ask me. Landing on cushions on the full? Let's see Rod Tucker thinks. He's signaled four! 7 in 5 now.

19.1 Avesh Khan to Abhinav Manohar, FOUR! HAS IT GONE THE DISTANCE? Short at the stumps, Abhinav rocks back and pounds it with all might for a flat hit over mid-wicket. Might have just fallen short of the ropes and this is really touch and go on the replay. It has been called a boundary! Right call too you'd think!

18.6 Dushmantha Chameera to Rahul Tewatia, SENT BACK! Slower delivery that is dug into the track well outside off, Tewatia reaches out and slaps it on the bounce to extra cover before Abhinav tees off. The throw is at the bowler's end but it goes awry, even as Abhinav makes it on time with a dive.

18.5 Dushmantha Chameera to Rahul Tewatia, FOUR! FORTUITOUS! They will take it though will the Titans! Goes full and at full pace outside off, Tewatia throws the kitchen sink at it and carves it off the leading edge as it flies very straight of deep third man to give him any chance.

Quinton de Kock was the only player to appeal for that one. He went up straight away. Nothing doing! Four slower ones from Chameera. Can he finish it off?

18.4 Dushmantha Chameera to Rahul Tewatia, BEATEN! Slower short delivery outside off, Tewatia has a hack at it but the tennis ball bounce deceives him and lobs over into the gloves of QDK who collects it low. He makes a half-appeal for caught behind as well.

18.3 Dushmantha Chameera to Abhinav Manohar, INSIDE EDGE SAVES HIM! Dipping slower yorker on the off stump, Manohar looks to stay low and launch it across the line, only to toe-end it onto his boot before it ricochets to short third man for one.
