India haven't missed a beat today. Save for their fielding perhaps but the same can be said about the Australian fielding effort as well. Both teams will certainly want to tidy up on that front but as they build towards the World Cup, they would have got a few more answers today. India will certainly be the happier of the two sides with a 1-0 lead under their belt but they will know that they have to maintain that intensity given that Australia know a thing or two about bouncing back having done so earlier in the year. Speaking of the visitors, they've lost four on the spin now dating back to that 3rd ODI in South Africa. They need to put in a better display in Indore come Sunday and will want to revisit their bowling combination in particular given that we could have plenty of runs in store in that contest.

Mohammed Shami is the Player of the Match for his stellar spell of 5/51. Here's what he has to say: It depends on the situation and what the demand of the team is. In this heat, you feel you have to bowl four or even five overs if you're bowling well with the new ball. But sometimes the body tires out after three overs. (Mitchell Marsh of Steven Smith, the more satisfying wicket?) The first one. On such a wicket where the ball isn't behaving the way you expect it to and you get the batter out with good swing, it feels good. (On his slower one) I was just focused on hitting the right length on this pitch. Just wanted to bowl the right length with the quicker one and the slower one. (On the fast-bowlers in the team doing well) We've played together for a long time and the bonding is really good. When a big event is around the corner it's important to have that.

KL Rahul (India captain): It's not the first time it (captaincy) has happened with me. I'm used to it, I love it. (What gave him most satisfaction today?) I think the commitment and intensity in the afternoon, it was really hot. We spoke in the huddle that after Colombo this was heaven. It was cooler than Colombo but it wasn't really the case. We started well with the new ball but physically it got tougher. The toughness we showed on the field was really good to see. We've only played with five bowlers so they had to bowl all ten. Good to see these guys back and doing what they do best today. Went into a tricky situation with Shubman getting out. Having kept for 50 overs I felt it was challenging and the wicket would have got slow. (Was he worried about his fingers?) Both my fingers - tough day's work behind the stumps. But it was a good day's work. Been away from the game for a while so I had to put myself under work. Different conditions, challenging as well - didn't expect anything different. But I'd love to improve on my keeping. We just talked about hitting good cricketing shots. (On the talk with Suryakumar Yadav while batting) We just thought of taking singles, it was hard to find the gaps for boundaries. That's something all the batters have been training on and working - how to rotate the strike in the middle. That was the challenge - we didn't get bogged down and said we'll take it deep with singles.

Pat Cummins (Australia captain): (Boxes ticked today?) Personally I'm happy I'm back. First game in a while. Good to get a first game in India. Disappointed we didn't get over the line but few of the guys batted well, few of the guys bowled well. (on the Injuries) We're hoping they're somewhere (ready) for the third game. Glenn Maxwell's just arrived in India. My body feels good - used the break to freshen up. (On Warner and Smith) Smithy's first hit in a while as well, Davy's been in great touch. Good to see them out there together. No doubt you've got one eye on the big tournament coming up. You want to get into good rhythm, set standards there. We might rest and rotate a bit.

Suryakumar Yadav: (On his innings) That is what I was dreaming off when I started playing this format - try to bat till the end and finish. Could not do the latter but definitely loving the new role. (What he has changed) I was thinking what was happening. The colour of the ball is the same, teams are same, bowlers are same. I felt I was hurrying a bit. Then I thought to take some more time and take it slowly, and bat deep. (Last time he faced 49 balls and did not play the sweep) Can't remember that. Think that has happened for the first time. (On his straight drives) Think that has come from Chandu Pandit's school of art. Loved it and enjoyed the way I batted. (On the openers) Shubman, we know what he has been doing. Everyone knows about Ruturaj's talent and class too. It (the partnership and the start) was very important for the team, we really enjoyed it. (Preparation before the WC) Try and bat the same way, bat deep and finish games for India.

Smooth sailing for the Men in Blue. They were without a few of their key players who were rested after the Asia Cup and Mohammed Siraj was also given a break. But KL Rahul and Co. have turned in a largely clinical performance with bat and ball to take the early lead in the series.

277 wasn't going to be an easy target with the ball holding in the surface in the first innings. Was it a case of the wicket easing out under lights or just two incredibly talented youngsters making batting look too easy is something we can always debate about. No harm in deeming it to be the latter, considering that Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill looked a million dollars today. While the former took a bit of time early on even as he middled the ball pretty well, the latter just showed why he has owned this format throughout 2023.

It was a partnership that Australia just had no answer to. The wicket seemed to ease out under lights and the total they had certainly looked below par even as Pat Cummins bowled well early on. Any time there was width on offer though, both Gill and Gaikwad rode the bounce to pierce the gaps at will. Gaikwad was dropped by Josh Inglis but he made that opportunity count and grabbed it with both hands en route to his first ODI half-century. This was after Gill racked up yet another one for himself with India in total cruise mode.

That was until Adam Zampa sent them both packing before Shreyas Iyer ran himself out in between. It just gave Australia a glimmer of hope as they strung in some tight deliveries and brought themselves back into the contest. Ishan Kishan looked to attack anything in his arc but just when a partnership was starting to develop between him and skipper KL Rahul, he perished to an attempted upper-cut. That brought Suryakumar Yadav - a man in the eye of the storm - to the middle but it seemed like the entry point and the situation was laid out perfectly for him to bat himself into the runs.

And that's exactly what he did! The incessant attempt at the sweep in the Asia Cup game against Bangladesh seemed a long time ago as he offered a straight bat to milk the singles. Interspersed with those were some delightful boundaries down the ground as he showcased incredible application to build an ODI innings - something that was seemingly amiss in his career thus far. Australia had no answer post Zampa's spell coming to an end and with Rahul ticking along steadily at his end, the writing was on the wall.

A first ODI half-century in 20 innings saw Suryakumar and the Indian team gain some much-needed confidence ahead of the World Cup. He couldn't finish it off but Rahul sure did and he did so in grand fashion while getting to a fifty of his own. A clinical performance and India tick a few more boxes ahead of the World Cup while taking the series lead. Stick around for the presentation...
