So that concludes our coverage of this first Test. Gosh we sure didn't expect to be putting out this statement at this point alright. The teams get an extended break by two days as the bandwagon moves to the capital city of New Delhi for the second Test starting on Friday, February 17. A fairytale comeback to the sport after a long layoff for 'Sir' Ravindra Jadeja. He didn't put a foot wrong (well, except his front foot on a few occasions) and he has restated his credentials are arguably the best all-rounder in the world in this format. The Australians are bound to have quite a task in countering him over the next three Tests - it's going to take a comeback of the highest order to storm back and level the series in Delhi and they sure can't be as flat as they were in this Test. They simply didn't turn up for large swathes here and seemed to have the pitch playing at the back of their mind - that is something they simply have to keep aside and play fire with fire.

Ravindra Jadeja is the Player of the Match for his stellar all-round display. Here's what he has to say: Feeling amazing. When you come back after five months and give your 100 per cent, taking wickets and scoring runs, it feels amazing. I've been working hard on my skills when I was in the NCA and was also working on my rehab. I would like to thank the entire NCA staff, physios and trainers who worked very hard on me. Even on a Sunday they came and worked on me. I was looking to bowl in good areas. The odd ball was spinning, the odd ball was going straight and keeping low. I knew the Australians will look to play the sweep and the reverse-sweep. If they made a mistake I had a chance to take a wicket. (On his batting) I generally look to keep things very simple. I try not to change too many things with my batting. It's a crucial number, 5, 6 or 7. Whenever the team needs me I need to do well.

Rohit Sharma (Indian captain): (On his hundred) It was (special) considering a lot of things. Start of the series, very important where we stand in the championship table. When you're playing a series like this it's important to start well. I'm happy I could put in a performance like this to help the team. Was unfortunate that I had to miss a few Tests due to injuries but I'm happy to be back, playing well and doing well for the team. Since I was appointed Test captain I played just two Tests. I got Covid in England, missed three Tests in South Africa (prior to that) I got a freak injury in Bangladesh. All those things can happen. I've had a lot of injuries in the past so I know how to come back from those and be ready for it. We wanted to start well and put in a performance like that. To be honest the last few years, the kind of pitches we're playing on in India, you've got to have some sort of application, a clear mindset and a plan on how to go about getting those runs. Since I've started opening I've tried to figure out what can threaten me while I'm batting. I've grown up playing in Mumbai where surfaces can turn a lot. I try to use my feet, try and get to the pitch of the ball and at the same time try and put pressure on the bowler. There are so many things that you can do and it's important that when you play on pitches like that, you understand your strengths and what you can do. I think it was the first two overs from the seamers - 2/2 to start a game like that, you're pretty much in the ascendancy. The opposition is always under pressure (after that). We have quality in our bowling department. Shami and Siraj have both been in great form, they know how to exploit these conditions. Having that first innings performance was important. All our batters applied themselves well to get us that lead and then our spinners bowled well.

Pat Cummins (Australian captain): The game moves pretty quickly here in India. Thought India played very well. Those spinners are always going to be tough and Rohit also showed his class. First innings, the wicket spun but it was unplayable. Could have scored at least 100 runs more and put pressure on them. Obviously starting out is tough but two or three guys got a start. Would like them to convert. Murphy has been impressive for the last year or so.

Ravichandran Ashwin: You know how Test matches work from the third day onwards. Early wickets set the tone for us. It has been going on for a while. I have been struggling to sit inside and watch others bat. My friend Pujara let me bat as night-watchman. I took the opportunity gladly. The wicket was pretty slow. So, needed to get the batsman forward to drive. Massive help is an understatement. The way he has batted, he has bowled and don't have to mention how he moves in the field. One thing I have realised over the years is to stay in the moment. We expect Australia to come back hard. They are a world-class side. I really look forward to go out and bat. If there is an opportunity, I am going to go out and bat. Knowing Puji, it is going to happen for sure

So much talk in the lead-up to this Test over the pitch, India's batting concerns and how this could possibly be Australia's best chance to win a Test series in India. After eight sessions, what we've managed to learn is that beating India in India remains the most difficult proposition in the world as far as Test cricket goes. The pitch kept low, but it wasn't treacherous by any stretch. And absolutely nothing can justify Australia's insipid display in the second innings.

The toss was the only thing that went the visitors' way - Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj then got the ball to talk as they reduced Australia to 2-2 on the first morning. While Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith applied themselves brilliantly thereafter, showing immense maturity in playing the ball on the front foot. Once Ravindra Jadeja got into the act and had Labuschagne stumped, it all went downhill for the visitors. Jadeja capped his comeback with a five-wicket haul and even as Alex Carey put in a nice, spunky counter-attack, it all came apart for the visitors who could only muster 177.

Rohit Sharma then led the way with the bat, making batting look far easier than it was. Todd Murphy capped off a memorable debut, looking head and shoulders above the rest of his colleagues and outbowling senior statesman Nathan Lyon as well. Even as Murphy chipped away at the wickets, Jadeja and Axar Patel dropped anchor and built the lead to a sizeable one, with Mohammed Shami also adding useful runs this morning. Eventually, India were bowled out for a round 400, leaving the Aussies with a mountain and then some to climb.

But gosh, nobody could have possibly envisioned the Domino Effect that was to unfold. One after another, they came and went as though they were in a hurry to catch the next flight out. Ravichandran Ashwin let the ball off a string, keeping it very simple and attacking the stumps without trying too much. He just let the ball then take a bit of turn off the surface and that was enough to blow the Australian batting unit out of the water.

There were a couple of surprising ball tracking calls when Matt Renshaw was trapped deep in his crease. It struck him quite high but ball tracking returned three reds, as it did for Peter Handscomb when he played forward. Either way, the Australians simply lacked application with the bat this Test, save for Smith, Labuschagne and Carey. Smith paid witness to the procession from the other end as it all came apart in a matter of a couple of hours, even as he wasn't afraid in lofting the spinners over the infield now and then. Australia simply need to put a lot of things right in order to compete further this series - losing 10 wickets in a single session is as confidence-denting as it can get and they leave Nagpur with way more questions than answers. Did that slant down too much by any chance? Nope - it hasn't! India have annihilated Australia by an innings and 132 runs. This has been a resounding victory of the highest order!
