Analysis

Commentary

With this resounding victory, Australia has become the first team to qualify for the WTC final. It also makes the series interesting with all to play for in Ahmedabad. Like always, it was a pleasure bringing all the live updates from this game. The 4th and the final Test starts on 9th March. Till then, this is me, Arya Sekhar Chakraborty signing off also on behalf of my fellow commentator and dear friend Karthik Raj.

Nathan Lyon (Player of the Match): It's been a pretty remarkable Test series but to come out here and put up a team effort like this, I am very proud. I don't have all the traits but I believe in my stock ball. If you believe in your stock delivery and keep bowling those against high quality batters, you will get some purchase, I have been lucky enough to be challenged against some of the best like Virat and Pujara and the rest of the guys.

Steven Smith (Australia captain): (What the win can be attributed to) Everything. First day, we lost the toss and had to bowl first. Kuhnemann was really good in that first innings and all of the bowlers contributed. Usman batted very well in the first innings. There were a few partnership with Marnus that help get us ahead of the game. Puji played an outstanding innings but we stuck at it. Murphy went run-a-ball for about 17 overs and Kuhnemann got the important wicket of Virat. We think about Patty back home, our thoughts are with him. I enjoy captaining in this part of the world. Think I did a reasonable job this week. Have to see what the conditions are like. Proud to clinch a spot in the WTC final in a couple of months time. Hope we can finish the series off well

Rohit Sharma (India captain): Yea when you lose a Test match there are a lot of things that didn’t go our way. We didn’t bat well in the first innings. We understand the importance of getting runs in the 1st innings. When they got a 80 runs lead we needed to bat well in the 2nd innings which didn’t really happen. Honestly, we haven’t thought about it yet. We have some time to think about it, we have to regroup and try and understand what he did right in the first two games. No matter what the pitches are we have to come and do our job and follow the plans. I mean look when you are playing on challenging wickets you have to be brave. I felt we allowed their bowlers to bowl at a particular area. Not taking anything away from them. Lyon kept challenging us, and kept hitting the right areas. We weren’t brave enough. One odd game can happen but it’s all about chipping in. We wanted a few guys to stand up and take the team through but it didn’t happen. You will falter in your plans and that is exactly what happened in this game.

Travis Head: It was just about waiting for my opportunity and taking it. It's just nice to contribute. Not everything is going to go your way but prepared. Make sure we can go out and execute in the first innings which we did well. We had some plans in Sri Lanka and Pakistan and wanted to be sure about that. Fantastic job to come back after the first two Tests. Take it one step at a time. There were going to be good balls. Also, when India thought there were on top, there were going to be some balls to score. Difficult to score when you are facing one of the best bowlers in the world. There was no messages coming out. It was just coming out and staying composed. (About Lyon) There was some criticism about him after the first Test but he has got the most wickets for Australia in the subcontitent and that's for a reason. He is an unbelievable bowler and long may it continue.

It was an exceptional start to the day’s play by Ravichandran Ashwin as he managed to turn one past Usman Khawaja and the faint outside edge was safely grabbed by KS Bharat behind the stumps. The Aussies feared the worst and batted cautiously with both Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head trying to trust their defence. Ashwin and Jadeja bowled brilliantly in tandem but all of a sudden after the 10th over, it was a clear change of tactics from Head.

He started taking the aerial route against the likes of Ashwin and Jadeja and found some important boundaries which kept eating away the required runs. Labuschagne also followed suit and took the attacking approach, finding the boundaries quite consistently. Eventually, they chased it down in a jiffy to take the contest by 9 wickets.

It was the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who won the toss on Day 1 and opted to bat. It looked a treacherous wicket right from ball one and the Indian batters had a battle on their hands. The ball spun sharply on a consistent which made it a no contest between bat and ball. Matthew Kuhnemann was the wrecker-in-chief and was supported very well by Nathan Lyon.

None of the Indian batters showed any sort of resilience barring Virat Kohli who top-scored with 22 as India folded out for just 109 runs. Australia batted well for the remainder of the opening day, finishing on 156/4, with a significant lead of 45 runs. They lost a few crucial wickets but on a pitch as tacky as this, any lead was going to be significant.

Usman Khawaja batted with authority and scored 60 to rest home the advantage for the visitors. There were a few good scores here and there but it was a dream spell of bowling from Umesh Yadav and Ashwin on Day 2 morning which again neutralized Australia’s advantage. They were eventually bowled out for 197, securing a 88 run lead.

India needed to bat out of their skin to post a competitive score. They were well aware that a target of 150 for Australia could have been a match-winning one for them. India kept losing wickets again and barring a certain Cheteshwar Pujara who played a special knock, most of the remaining batters were like walking ducks getting out cheaply.

Pujara’s innings of 58 ensured that India scored 163 in their 2nd innings, giving Australia a target of 76 to chase in their 2nd essay. Eventually after a tough opening forty minutes, Labuschagne and Head managed to ease the nerves and chased it down with 9 wickets in hand. What a final match we have in store.

What a convincing win for Australia and they will be very proud of the comeback, especially after what happened in the first two Tests. It was a sub-standard wicket to say the least but the Aussies managed to apply themselves well and their spinners did the trick. A real spirited effort from Australia as they thrashed India by 9 wickets. They have also qualified for the final of the World Test Championship.

Labuschagne immediately screams, 'Yeah' and that reflects the magnitude of this result. India still lead but the score-line of this series is now 2-1!
