Commentary

So, it's the repeat of '92 World Cup finals as Pakistan and England go head-to-head at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. One of these sides lost to Zimbabwe, while the other lost to Ireland in the group stages. Again, that just sums the nature of T20 cricket. That's why we love the format, don't we? Right then. Now that the dust has settled and the emotions have calmed down, the fact still remains. India have been knocked out of the T20 World Cup. After being knocked out in the Super 12s last year, perhaps making it to the semi-finals is a step in the right direction but anything less than a title is labelled as a failure for the mighty India. That's just the nature of cricket. Especially in the shortest format. Have we seen the last of some players in the shortest format for India? Who knows? It was a campaign with some of the highest highs but it's a case of being back to the drawing board and coming back stronger for bigger and better things next year.

Well, if you didn't believe in conincidences or qudrat ka nizam before, you might want to reconsider after going through Pakistan's T20 World Cup campaign and it's eerie similarities to the '92 World Cup campaign. From the brink of elimination to the finals, it was a hell of a ride for the Men in Green. Understandbly, their fans are on cloud nine after their results and prospects of lifting the trophy. Well, that's the way the cookie crumbles for India. Their wait to get their hands on the T20 World Cup trophy goes on. It's a crestfallen Indian side that's been knocked out of the tournament by an England side that were firing on all cylinders today, despite a couple of significant absentees. They were the deserving winners tonight, bringing their A-game to te party when it matters the most.

Jos Buttler (England captain): (Turnaround after the Ireland defeat) Certainly does feel a long time ago (the Ireland game). But the character we showed since that moment, coming against New Zealand and playing that way and then putting in a performance like this is brilliant. (Alex Hales' performance) Against a top quality opposition as well. We came in with a very good feeling as a group. I thought everyone from 1 to 11 stood up today. We always want to start as fast as we can and we had Rashid to come at 11 today. That's an incredibly long batting lineup and that allows you to start off knowing you have such depth. He (Hales) was so tough to bowl at out there. We complemented each other well. He was a brilliant partner today. It's important to enjoy this - a brilliant performance and we can reflect on this and enjoy but we know that we have one big task to go. Special praise to Chris Jordan coming into this game having not played thus far. It was an incredibly tough job bowling to one of the best players at the death in Hardik.

Rohit Sharma (Indian captain): It's very disappointing how it turned out today. I thought we batted well at the back end to get to that score. We weren't good enough with the ball. It definitely wasn't a wicket where a team could come and chase the target in 17 overs. We didn't step up with the ball today. When it comes to the knockout stages, it becomes about handling the pressure. It's something that comes with individuals too. You can't go and teach people how to handle pressure. These guys have played enough cricket to know that with the IPL and other games but it didn't happen today. When it comes to this stage, it's all about keeping calm. (Where the game slipped away) We didn't start off too well and let the game get away. I thought the ball swung a little bit. We spoke about keeping it tight. We know runs are scored square of the wicket at Adelaide. We spoke about keeping it tight and not giving much away but that didn't happen, which is obviously disappointing. When we won that first game, it showed a lot of character. Even the game against Bangladesh, it was a tricky one. In that game, we held our nerve pretty well and executed our plans. If you don't execute, there's nothing you can do.

Alex Hales is the Player of the Match. Here is what he has to say: (His best knock) It would be right up there for sure. It's the huge occasion, against India in the semi-finals of the World Cup. A massive moment for us. This is one of the best grounds in the world. Especially in the powerplay with the short square boundaries. It's a ground I have good memories of and enjoy batting at. I never thought I'll play in the World Cup again. This is one of the best nights of my career. Jos (Buttler) was fantastic as well.

"Good times never felt so good! So good, so good, so good!" Of course, it's Sweet Caroline blaring out from the speakers at the Adelaide Oval. The England fans were in limited numbers tonight but they're certainly making themselves heard now.

They came, they saw and watched as the ball traveled all around the park. That was the misery endured by the Indian bowlers today - they received an absolute shellacking as they set out to defend what seemed like a par score. Whether it was a case of the wicket getting better or not, they just lost the plot and had no clue where to land it. But take nothing away from Alex Hales and Jos Buttler - it was a sight to behold if you were an English supporter as they pulverized the Men in Blue all around the park.

Defending 168, there was a bit of swing initially but not much. Yet, India weren't attacking enough with the keeper standing up initially to avoid Buttler from stepping out and the slip also going out earlier than usual. That said, when a knuckle ball sent down by Bhuvneshwar Kumar was dispatched by Hales over extra cover, the alarm bells were ringing loud and clear.

Rohit Sharma tried spin in the powerplay and while there was some purchase on offer, Axar Patel didn't land it in the right areas. All said though, England's openers were possessed and killed the game in the powerplay, leaving nothing to chance thereafter. The spirits were down in the Indian camp as their ordinary display on the field showed. Just about every bowler who came onto bowl went the distance and the writing was on the wall already.

Hales racked up a blistering half-century to complete a fabulous redemption arc! Remember, he was nowhere close to the England team a few months ago and it seemed as though he wouldn't ever play international cricket again. But he showed his class and power on display, even taking down the negative matchup against Axar to bury the game for good.

Buttler wasn't to be left far behind either and it was a six-fest that saw the openers gun down the target with plenty of overs to spare. And they now march into the summit clash to set up a mouth-watering contest with Pakistan. Stick around as we hear from the captains shortly...
