Commentary

Well, then. It was a much improved performance by Sri Lanka with the bat. Pathum Nissanka and skipper Dasun Shanaka played brilliantly to help them put up a competitive total on the board. But their bowlers couldn't quite hit their grooves. It was a belligerent display by the Indian batters, chasing that target of 184 runs down with nearly four overs remaining. Shreyas Iyer continued his brilliant touch. It was refreshing to see Sanju Samson playing a good knock at this level. And well, how good was Ravindra Jadeja.

Shreyas Iyer (Player of the Match): (About the shuffle across the crease) When I do that, my body releases. After that, I can focus better. He was smart, he bowled a yorker. Luckily I survived that one. I was shocked when I watched the recap. It was really important to time the ball at that stage. It was seaming and swinging. Ishan Kishan was batting well but unfortunately got out. Sanju came in and build a crucial partnership;. After that, Jaddu bhai came in and it was a cruising moment. (On Lahiru Kumara) I wasn't really thinking about that. I was just focusing on myself, not on the bowlers. Even in our team meetings, we discuss about focusing on ourselves and eliminating the previous games. When I faced a few balls, the ball wasn't turning and he was bowling faster through the air. I knew that even if I mishit, the ball is traveling through the air in this stadium.

Rohit Sharma (India Captain): It was something pleasing to see for us. The middle-order coming out and swinging, that partnership (between Iyer and Samson) was very crucial for us. It has been happening consistently and it's great to see them take responsibility and finish the game. Don't want to be too harsh on the bowlers - these days can happen. We restricted them well in the first 15 overs but we expected them to come out and play like that in a ground where it flies everywhere. Really good pitch as well. It's obviously important for us to understand what we need to do in the back end of the innings. (On Sanju Samson) A lot of these guys are talented - they just need an opportunity to express themselves. You've got to look after the guys who've been in and around the team. We understand the talent they possess, it's about giving them opportunities. To finish the way they did towards the end was really good - Jaddu looked quite positive from ball one and Shreyas as well. It was an important knock - we lost a couple of wickets and needed someone to stay until the end. Shreyas played brilliantly. We'll sit down tomorrow and have a look at what we can do (regarding any changes). I'm sure you'll ask me 'we had 27 players'. There will be more (laughs). When you win a series you want to try out a few players who haven't had the opportunity. Some of them are going to play Test cricket as well so we have to look after them. Physically they will take care of themselves but mentally, we've addressed it in our team gatherings. If we need to rotate and change it, we will do it.

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka captain): (183) Very good score on this wicket. We started well. We should have done well in the powerplay. If we had got another wicket in the powerplay, it should have been better for us. We got a plan before coming to the game. Lahiru must bowl at the first six overs. He could have bowled in that period. The wicket was superb today and I played to my strength. It's another series loss, but lots of positives for us. If we can get a win tomorrow, it will be good for us.

Sanju Samson: I think the wicket was playing really well. On this ground the ball flies and the boundaries are short. We knew if we get in we can easily chase it. I don't think 10 per over is tough on this ground. The partnership with Iyer was crucial. We both have played enough cricket together to understand who's going well and who needs to take time. I couldn't take too much time - my rhythm was missing in the first 20 balls. It's been a very long time since I played a game, coming from a bubble and getting out of quarantine. It was very cold while fielding but once I started batting I couldn't feel anything. The conversation in the team meeting has always been to set our standards no matter what the opposition does. I think we've set some really good standards. We played well in Lucknow - the ground was bigger and the wicket was slow. The weather was different but coming here, it's a very small ground and it was a different wicket. It rained for a couple of days as well but we are experienced enough to adjust to the conditions and do whatever needed. It's a really special day for me today - I made my debut seven years ago and contributing to my team's success means a lot to me.

The total that Sri Lanka put on the board was not a below-par one. It did not deserve to be chased down with almost four overs remaining. But the Indian batters were just too good in the end. They smashed the bowlers all around the park, hardly putting a foot wrong in the effort. All done and dusted and all Dasun Shanaka could do was to have a wry smile on his face.

Sri Lanka were really in the game during the chase only when the seamers were operating at the start of the chase. The opening spells by Dushmantha Chameera and Lahiru Kumara saw the Indian openers walk back to the pavilion. The hosts might have been just a bit of pressure at that point, but Shreyas Iyer did not allow it to last.

Right from the first boundary that he drilled down the ground, Iyer looked like a man possessed. He took chances and found scoring opportunities throughout the innings. Sanju Samson started slowly and was helped by the face that Iyer was playing a little gem at the other end. When Samson finally hit his screws, Kumara had to bear the brunt. It finally took a miraculous effort from Binura Fernando to dismiss him.

And what a terrific little innings did Ravindra Jadeja play. Sri Lanka did not know what hit them as Jadeja breezed his way to 45* off just 18 deliveries, hardly playing a shot in anger. The partnership between him and Iyer made the final lap of the chase seem like a walk in the park.

The difference in quality between Kumara and Chameera compared to the rest of the Sri Lankan attack was exposed pretty badly tonight. They dearly missed the spin duo of Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana. The current lot was just not good enough to contain this Indian batting unit.

17.1 Dushmantha Chameera to Ravindra Jadeja, FOUR! GAME, SET, MATCH AND SERIES TO INDIA! Full in length outside off, Jadeja holds his ground as he crouches low and just carves it on the up and through the line of it. Powerfully driven down the ground and that'll do quite nicely for the hosts. What an obliteration we have witnessed in Dharamsala! India beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets and 17 deliveries to spare!

Brilliant lengths by Fernando. He hit the yorker length consistently and hardly gave the batters anything to work with. But all that have come a touch too late for Sri Lanka. India are just 2 runs away from victory now.
