So that is that. Unfortunately, we don't get a result and it's the first time teams have split points in an IPL fixture since 2019. Mind you, this is bound to add another layer of intrigue to the points table given the logjam of points. Of course, all eyes will be on the PBKS-MI fixture now with the latter choosing to bowl first upon winning the toss. You know where to catch all our coverage of that action so head over and follow it all right here on Sportskeeda while keeping yourselves updated with further cricketing news and action from around the globe. For the moment though, this is the duo of Karthik Raj and Sooryanarayanan Sesha taking your leave. Thank you so much for being a patient audience and sticking with us despite the game ending as a damp squib. See you around soon - buh-bye for now!
MATCH OVER (No Result)
Lucknow Super Giants 125-7 (19.2)
Ayush Badoni 59* (33) | Nicholas Pooran 20 (31)
Moeen Ali 4-0-13-2 | Matheesha Pathirana 3.2-0-22-2
A topsy-turvy innings but what a stunning knock that was from Ayush Badoni. Lucknow looked down and out but Badoni has given his team a fighting chance here. The duo of Manan Vohra and Kyle Mayers started steadily with it being easy to find out that this track is also quite a tricky one to bat on. Just as the pair was settling down, MS Dhoni's decision to introduce Moeen Ali worked immediately as Mayers holed out to Ruturaj Gaikwad at long-off.
A couple of overs later, Vohra's ambitious attempt to scoop failed as he was castled by Maheesh Theekshana. The situation became worse as Theekshana had Krunal Pandya caught at slip off the very next delivery. LSG ended the Powerplay at 31-3 and the wickets continued to fall even after that with Ravindra Jadeja finding the top of the off-stump to stun Marcus Stoinis. Karan Sharma and Nicholas Pooran tried to rebuild from there but the former's scratchy knock was brought to end by Moeen courtesy a sharp return catch.
This is when Ayush Badoni joined Pooran with LSG requiring a substantial partnership to rescue the situation. They batted sensibly against the spinners by not taking any risks. While Pooran struggled to get going, Badoni started to take calculated risks against Theekshana and they worked superbly. Pooran's 20 off 31 was brought to an end by Matheesha Pathirana in the 18th over but Badoni grew from strength to strength as he helped LSG smash 20 runs off the penultimate over bowled by Deepak Chahar.
Just as LSG were looking for a final flourish, Pathirana got a second scalp by dismissing Krishnappa Gowtham but rain intervened as the game was halted with four balls still left in the innings. Unfortunately, the weather never relented and the match officials had no choice but to call the game off!
You don't have to feel too disappointed of course. Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians are set to clash in Mohali - head over here to follow our coverage of that contest!
18:59 PM IST: Well, our worst fears have been realized. The match has been officially abandoned and the two teams split points!
Never a right or wrong time to watch this bit of sorcery! Ravindra Jadeja bamboozled Marcus Stoinis with an absolute peach of a delivery that the Australian had no answer to. Here's a watch on the same in case you missed it!👇
7:28 PM IST will be the cutoff for some sort of a contest, as the host broadcasters confirm. We wait and hope!
18:26 IST: Unfortunately, the covers remain intact. We continue to lose overs and keep our fingers crossed in hope that we have a resumption at the earliest.
Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya's history is well-known even though the duo buried the hatchet long back. With the latter captaining LSG today and Hooda left out of the starting XI, fans on Twitter had a few things to say. Have a read!👇
18:02 IST: Boooo! The covers are coming back on again. Look at Jonty Rhodes, the LSG fielding coach, assisting the groundsmen in bringing the covers! Not the first time he has done this and he's quite the sport alright. But alas, we wait again and hope that we don't lose too many overs here.
17:57 IST: The covers are coming off with the rain having stopped. Great news that as the umpires make their way out to assess conditions. And we can confirm that the first innings has been completed. Lucknow Super Giants finish on 125/7 in 19.2 overs!
17:48 IST: Still no update from the venue. There's every chance we've seen the last of the Super Giants with the bat for today. Keep your fingers crossed though that we resume soon, folks!
There was a moment at the toss when Danny Morrison mentioned about this season being MS Dhoni's swansong, only for the latter to leave it all up in the air again. Here's a read on the same in case you missed it!👇
17:19 IST: The rain has got heavier and the ground-staff rush out with the covers. The game had a slightly delayed start. So, this innings might be over when we have the re-start!
Terrific running catch from Ajinkya Rahane. It is time that batters walk off immediately when Rahane is in the picture for a catch. That is how good he is!
19.2 Matheesha Pathirana to Krishnappa Gowtham, SKIED....AND TAKEN! Rahane again! Back of a length delivery with pace off outside the off stump. Gowtham stands tall and miscues his heave as he skies it high before Rahane keeps his eyes on the ball and runs forward from long on before sliding to his right and pouching it really well. And the covers are coming on as well!
Krishnappa Gowtham c Ajinkya Rahane b Matheesha Pathirana 1 (3b, 0*4 0*6)
CSK have taken a review while it has started to drizzle heavily here. Need an eye on that
19.1 Matheesha Pathirana to Krishnappa Gowtham, HAS IT CARRIED?Sounded like a nick alright and the umpire wants to confirm if it was a clean catch or not. We go upstairs! Width offered on a short length as Gowtham clears his front leg and throws the kitchen sink at it. Might have just got the toe-end before Dhoni collected it.
But well, UltraEdge shows a clear gap between bat and ball so Gowtham is going nowhere. NOT OUT!
