Commentary

Right then. The Sixers move to the top of the table with that win, while the Renegades remain stranded in the last spot. Two sides with contrasting fortunes produced an entertaining encounter today, despite the rain hovering around for a bit. Let's hope the weather stays away for the rest of the day and the tournament, so we can have a lot more cricket. That's all for now though. For a good part of this contest, it was one-way traffic with the Sixers not putting a foot wrong. Yet, they would have had their hearts in their mouth with a cacophonous set of overs ensuing post the drinks break. Eventually, the Renegades were left with far too much to do though with the damage caused much earlier in the innings.

Defending the highest total of the season thus far, the Sixers were clever in rushing through the first five overs with spin owing to a drizzle. The focus was clearly on ensuring there would be a result and in the process, Sophie Ecclestone managed to prize out a couple of wickets before Chamari Athapaththu nicked behind to Alyssa Healy, who pulled off a one-handed specky inches off the turf. Sophie Molineux kept running out of partners and once she departed with the score reading 38/5, the writing was on the wall.

Then came a sudden twist while Carly Leeson and Rhiann O'Donnell were out in the middle. Stella Campbell lost the plot and speared a flurry of wides before skipper Ellyse Perry endured a torrid over of her own, suddenly putting the Renegades back in contention. From 59/5 in 10 overs, the score shot up to 111/5 at the end of the 13th, bringing the asking rate down to something more achievable as both Leeson and O'Donnell flicked a switch with some outstanding shots.

That's when Perry turned to her spinners and Ecclestone, along with Ashleigh Gardner, tied down the batters and sent the asking rate shooting up again. It was bound to lead to wickets and the slog overs brought about another rendition of the Domino Effect. Leeson notched up a superb half-century - the first of the season by any Renegades batter - but in the end, it was too tall an ordeal for her to negotiate on her own, resulting in the inevitable unfolding.

This result has taken the Sixers up to the top of the points table as they become the first team to register points in double digits this season. That they've done so with an extra game in hand compared to the second-placed Perth Scorchers testifies just what a professional outfit this is. As for the Renegades, their sorry season continues to reach a point of no end and it's getting out of hand now as far as staying relevant for the playoffs is concerned. There is still time to catch up but it must start quickly. Really quickly.

Well done to the Sydney Sixers! Another day, another victory and a comprehensive one at that as they soar to the top of the points table ahead of the Perth Scorchers.
