Melbourne Stars Women beat Perth Scorchers Women by 6 runs. Lauren Winfield-Hill 36 (25) | Amy Edgar 3/27 Chloe Piparo 34 (27) | Alice Capsey 3/37
The Perth Scorchers needed a decent start to embark on this chase, but sadly none came their way. They lost their star batter Beth Mooney, who is also one of the finest batters of her generation, when the score was just 19.
A lot rested upon the shoulders of skipper Sophie Devine, and the Kiwi did try her best, but in the end, it just was not enough. Middle-order batters Chloe Piparo and Maddy Green had a decent partnership going, with the former manipulating the field well and striking the ball to all parts of the ground, but once they departed, the going got tough for the women in orange.
A late assault by Alana King certainly helped matters, and Annabel Sutherland’s poor day with the ball precipitated matters, but the latter bagged the former’s wicket after a few lusty blows, and after that, the game was in the Stars’ pocket.
In the event, Offie Sasha Moloney had to bowl a tight final over to ensure victory for her side. Skipper Nicole Faltum will go home happy and hope that this gives her side a boost of confidence, if nothing else!
