Commentary

After 34 matches, and a whole lot of action, first from the National Stadium in Karachi and then from the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, we have a first-time winner in the Pakistan Super League! Lahore Qalandars went head to head in the final with the best team of the league stages, Multan Sultans, but were good enough and clinical enough just when it mattered the most, and finally, were the worthy winners of PSL season 7! Shaheen Afridi was outstanding with his overall effort as captain and with contributions from each and every player on show, his team was able to pull off an incredible win in the final!

It was an absolute pleasure on out part to be able to bring you all the live action tonight, from the Gaddafi Stadium itself, the home of the Lahore Qalandars! Shaheen Afridi: It is a very big achievement for Lahore Qalandars and it is well deserved that we got the win this time round. It was a tough decision for me too to take, being captain of the team, but the senior players like Mohahammad Hafeez and all the support staff were very helpful right through. The kind of fight that we put up, not giving up till the last ball, was the highlight of our winning performance. Thanks a lot to everyone.

Rizwan collects the runner-up cheque on behalf of the Multan Sultans. Make no mistake, they've had a magnificent campaign!

Sarcasm aside, this one's a real surprise - Mohammad Rizwan wins the Player of the Tournament award! He gets it for his runs, wicket-keeping and leadership throughout the tournament.

Mohammad Rizwan: It was a brilliant tournament, and from the point of view of the cricket played, the top two teams reached the final for sure! The final has its own pressure, and I felt that Lahore handled the pressure much better than us, Hafeez batter really well and set it up for the big hitting in the end. I try to keep things simple as a captain and help all the players in the team. We can make a few mistakes but there is always scope for improvement for everyone.

Time for the Batter of the Tournament Award - surprise, surprise! It is Fakhar Zaman! Nobody saw that one coming now, did we?

Shadab Khan wins the Bowler of the Tournament Award. 19 wickets in the competition and a massive catalyst behind Islamabad United making the playoffs. Imran Khan from the Multan Sultans collects the award on Shadab's behalf.

Mohammad Rizwan comes up to receive an award for the best wicket-keeper of the tournament. 7 catches and a couple of stumpings to go with it!

Khushdil Shah wins the All-Rounder of the Tournament Award. It's going to take something to keep him away from Pakistan's T20 World Cup squad later this year. Khushdil also bags the Fielder of the Tournament Award.

Multan Sultans win the Spirit of Cricket Award for the season! Huge roar for Mohammad Rizwan who comes up to the dais to collect the award.

Rashid Riaz wins the award for Umpire of the Tournament.

Zaman Khan wins the Emerging Player of the Tournament Award. Surely, we're going to see a lot of this lad in time to come!

Thanks to each and everyone here who witnessed this game. It was a brilliant atmosphere. Thanks to the management for believing in my abilities. This was the right time for me to perform. We all know the importance of absorbing pressure early on in a final. Me and Harry Brook got a good partnership. I'm so happy with the way David Wiese finished the game. Our fans have been supporting us all these years and wanted us to win the trophy. I think this is for them. I am really proud of how Shaheen managed all the players in the team and gave them a lot of authority. Well done Shaheena, you are a superstar for me!

Lahore Qalandars beat Multan Sultans by 42 runs and win the Pakistan Super League 7 final.

Multan Sultans were in for a big challenge tonight, having to chase down 181 runs to win the tournament. They needed a good start from their reliable openers to get them going, which happened for 3.5 overs, before Mohammad Hafeez started the wicket-taking spree by bowling Mohammad Rizwan round his legs. And since then, Lahore Qalandars kept on applying the pressure and never allowed Multan to come back in the game.

Multan lost wickets at regular intervals, and even though they tried their best to get a hold of the asking rate, the pace of Lahore was too hot to handle for them. There was hardly a proper answer to the hostility of the Lahore Qalandars pace bowling for the middle-order batters from Multan and even when they changed their pace to deceive the batters, it worked wonders for Shaheen Afridi and his pacers.

Spin from Mohammad Hafeez and Samit Patel was crucial too, as the former had a great time of it with ball in hand as well, with two important wickets, including that of the opposition captain. The fielding from Lahore was worthy of a final, as Fakhar Zaman produced a top quality fielding performance, getting Shan Masood run out of a direct hit and taking three vital catches.

Khushdil Shah, Tim David and Rilee Rossouw tried hard to bring Multan back in the contest, but Shaheen Afridi with his three wickets, Zaman Khan with his two wickets and Haris Rauf with his solitary wicket, all coupled with a lot of intelligence and ferocity, made sure that the task for these Multan Sultans batters would remain incomplete.

Shaheen Afridi's captaincy in the crunch moments was also praiseworthy, as he rang in the changes well and was quick to bounce back from any mistake made.

In the 1st innings, Mohammad Hafeez was all class with his half-century, ensuring Lahore did not collapse under pressure and then, Harry Brook and David Wiese stole the show with their power hitting and innovative batting, respectively.

Zaman Khan: The team played really well and was led brilliantly by Shaheen bhai. We played really well today. Shaheen bhai treats me like a younger brother and has always supported me while bowling. Rashid bhai (Rashid Khan) is one of the world's best spinners and I enjoyed sharing the dressing room with them.

Samit Patel: Absolutely (felt we could win it). We haven't won before and that motivated us. We did really well with a great crowd backing us. We played one final before in Karachi and lost that though we played good cricket in that tournament. When is he never fired up? (laughs when asked about Shaheen). I think he's always fired up. He's a world leader - he wants to lead from the front and he does lead from the front. You have to see his performances - the pace he bowls at as well. Him and Haris always want to bowl fast and they did that.

Abdullah Shafique: I am extremely happy - we made one final before and wanted to win tonight. I'm really happy. The catch was a really important one and I had to keep my focus. I would like to thank the crowd who came over to support us. They've been waiting to come to the stadium as well.

David Wiese: I thought the batters in the middle played nicely to set it up for us at the end. I was seeing it quite nicely and Harry Brook complemented me quite well. The fact that we weren't able to beat Multan throughout the tournament gave us some confidence but it was about going on there on the day and executing well.
