Thanks a lot for joining us in this game here in Wellington. It turned out to be a nail-biter of a finish, and one cannot help but imagine how else it could have ended up. The series is now being led by Australia 1-0, and the Kiwis will do well to try and play catch-up!
This was one of the most dramatic finishes one has seen in cricket of late. Australia and New Zealand played out one of the most exciting matches in the lead-up to the ICC T20 World Cup later this year in the first match of this series in Wellington, and all it does is make one's mouth water for the rest of the series.
Tim David was the hero for Australia with his boundary off the last ball, but it was skipper Mitchell Marsh, who stood tall till the end and ensured that he took his team home.
A lot of criticism may go Glenn Phillips' way for trying to flick the ball back in off the last ball when he could have just attempted to stop it. Had he done so, New Zealand may have won, or at least tied this game.
However, these things appear nice only from hindsight, and Phillips acted on the basis of muscle memory, and not from the comfort of an air-conditioned room.
Australia will be extremely pleased with this victory given how much they had expended for it; New Zealand will be ready to take their opponents down in the second T20I on Friday.
Phillips tries to whip the ball back in while diving to his left at deep midwicket but misses! David has won it for Australia!

19.6 Tim Southee to Tim David, FOUR! AUSTRALIA WIN IN A THRILLER! Tim David, you beauty! What incredible striking, comes in and smacked 31off the 10 balls and takes Australia home of the last ball. Phillips with a despairing dive to stop it, but can't get any hands on it and Australia take 1-0 lead in the series! Length delivery on the middle and leg, in the slot and David belted it to cow corner. Phillips did well to get there but just couldn't stop it. New Zealand can't believe, but this has been one chase to remember for a long time!
19.5 Tim Southee to Tim David, nails the yorker outside the off-stump, David drilled it through covers and they sprint back for the brace. Australia need 4 of the last ball! Boundary needed!
David does not miss out when he gets such a delivery!
19.4 Tim Southee to Tim David, SIX! BAM! Hits full on the cushions, that's a maximum, pivotal blow from David. Full toss and down the leg-side, David chases and flicks it all the way, that has been signaled a maximum.
19.3 Tim Southee to Mitchell Marsh, OH MY! Full toss, was there to be dispatched and Marsh misses out, is that the game? Marsh swings across the line and misses, pings on the pad for another leg-bye.
19.2 Tim Southee to Tim David, nails the yorker, tails in on the leg-stump. David could only dig it out to extra-cover for just one. So far so good from Southee!
A big referral from New Zealand! However, it turned out to be a wasted one.
19.1 Tim Southee to Mitchell Marsh, BIG APPEALS FOR LBW, TURNED DOWN! Might just be going down leg. Low full toss on the leg-stump, tailed in. Marsh swings and misses, pings on the boot and they sneak in a leg-bye. New Zealand review it!
Nothing on the UltraEdge. Ball tracker shows PITCHING OUTSIDE LEG! Let's move on!
19.1 Tim Southee to Mitchell Marsh, WIDE! Full and sprays it down the leg-side, a wide has been signaled. Southee is already under the pump here.
Tim Southee [3-0-38-0] will bowl the final over.
David and Marsh are turning this into a spectacle alright! Australia need just 16 runs off the last over! The pressure is now firmly on New Zealand.

18.6 Adam Milne to Tim David, SIX MORE! Australia are well and truly back in the game. Misses the length again by only just, David swings across, had enough to clear the man at wide long-on for back to back maximums.
That went a long way - 98m! David has absolutely thumped that one.
18.5 Adam Milne to Tim David, SIX! KABOOM! This game is not over by means folks, buckle up! Length delivery outside the off-stump, David hangs back and dispatches it over long-on and hits the roof in the end for a humongous strike. That is a 98m hit!
18.4 Adam Milne to Tim David, FOUR! There's the boundary, can David get another one? Yorker outside the tramline, David reaches and gets some bat on it, goes wide of short third-man and races away to the ropes.
