Match summary:
Sunrisers Eastern Cape win by 44 runs
Marco Jansen 71*(31) | Liam Dawson 2/27 (4) Jos Buttler 64(45) | Evan Jones 2/51 (4)
As it turns out, the horrible exhibition of death bowling from the Paarl Royals in the first innings played a major part in them losing today. They were in the game as long as Jos Buttler and Jason Roy were in the middle, but the scoreboard pressure, coupled by the slow-ish Boland Park deck, made life hell for the incoming - and soon outgoing batters.
A total of zero Paarl Royals middle order batters were able to register a double-digit score today. Buttler and Roy laid the foundation early on with a brisk start, and at one point, it seemed like the Paarl Royals would clinch this with some time to spare. Buttler, who has been thriving on situations such as these, meant business with his scoops, slogs and reverse sweeps.
Once Roy was dismissed, though, the climbing required rate started to tell on the batters. Both Buttler and Miller perished having mis-hit a delivery that was there to be put away. None of the middle-order batters were able to adjust to the pace of the wicket after that, and with the asking rate nearer to 20 than 10 for most of the second half of the innings, Paarl Royals were never going to get there.
