Commentary

That is all we have from the 1st ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand. Till the next time, it's goodnight and goodbye from the commentary box. This is me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty) signing off also on behalf of my fellow commentator Pradeep.

Babar Azam (Pakistan skipper): Definitely, the way we utilized the new ball was exceptional. The ball was not coming onto the bat very nicely during the 1st innings. The pacers kept it tight and then the spinners came in. We know that 2nd time it would be easier under lights especially with the dew. We just wanted to build the partnership as it wasn’t easy for a new batter. That was the plan with Fakhar to bat deep. Then the way Rizwan batted was exceptional. Our bench strength is excited to play whenever they get an opportunity. I have the option in both pace and spin/ Today’s plan was to execute our strengths and continue the momentum and we did that very well.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand skipper): Yes we would have liked a few more. Pakistan was brilliant with the ball but it was a competitive score. Assistance was there in both innings but credit to Pakistan for being very clinical and adapting to the conditions early. There was a number of mid partnerships but no one carried on. There were a few good fights in the middle. We got a few opportunities in the 2nd innings as well. We have to come out better against a tough opposition like Pakistan. The toss did have an impact but still, there was enough assistance in both innings. Trying to take some learning from this match. Reverse swing and some turn was there. Bit there for everybody. We would try to learn quickly and come back strongly.

Agha Salman: Was a bit tricky surface, and 280 or 290 would've been tough to chase on that. Since the dew came into affect, there wasn't much of the swing on offer. As a spinner if you had bowled in the right areas, it was tough to bat on. It's always good to win the first game of the series, sets the tone for the series.

At the halfway stage Pakistan would have been the happier of the two teams and in the end, it turned out to be a pretty straightforward run chase for Pakistan as they go 1-0 up in the 3-match series after a comfortable win by 6 wickets. The opening duo of Imam Ul Haq and Fakhar Zaman started off pleasantly as the New Zealand pacers couldn’t quite get much help from the surface.

They raced off to 30 in the 6th over before Michael Bracewell pocketed the wicket of Imam to break it open for New Zealand. It was a nothing shot from Imam as he ended up lobbing that straight to the mid-on fielder. Santner and Bracewell bowled well in tandem but Santner did concede a few boundary balls and allowed Pakistan to find some easy boundaries.

Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman batted sensibly in the middle. Fakhar in particular was timing the ball brilliantly and went onto score a brilliant half-century. He was eventually castled by Bracewell on 56. Babar was joined in middle by Mohammad Rizwan and did the resurrection job to perfection. They didn’t allow New Zealand to sneak their way through.

They kept rotating the strike and found the occasional boundaries which didn’t allow the required rate to creep up. Babar reached a half-century and looked well set in the middle when Glenn Philips turned one down the leg side and he was already down the track and couldn’t quite get back in time. Rizwan was joined in by Haris Sohail and the veteran left-hander batted brilliantly from the outset.

He took the attack to the New Zealand bowlers and raced off to a 23-ball 32 before departing at a time when Pakistan was within touching distance of the victory target. Rizwan was exceptional and was never troubled by any of the bowlers. He did get some cramps but still managed to get his side over the finishing line, remaining unbeaten on 77 off 86 deliveries.

It was Salman Agha who smashed Southee for a maximum to seal the game for Pakistan with 11 deliveries to spare. Earlier in the day, it was an exceptional bowling effort from Pakistan to restrict New Zealand to just 257. Naseem Shah breathed fire and bowled brilliantly, finishing with figures of 5/57. For New Zealand, most of the batters got start but couldn't quite convert it into a big one. Latham was the top scorer with 42.

48.1 Tim Southee to Agha Salman, SIX! SALMAN FINISHES THINGS IN STYLE! Pakistan go 1-0 up in this three match ODI series. Length delivery on the off-stump, Salman launches that one away and clears the long-off fence by just for a maximum and Pakistan finish a clinical victory here.

Pakistan needs just 4 runs off 12 deliveries. This has been a dominating chase from them. Just milking around Ferguson for a few singles to get closer.
