Well, we are all pinching ourselves a little bit here. But it is no dream (or should I call it a nightmare for the bowlers). It is indeed real life. 270 has now been breached thrice and we are not even half way through the season, yet. Royal Challenger Bengaluru, who had the envious record of the highest score ever in the IPL before the 2024 edition began, have now gotten back on the top of the list. BUT AS THE OPPOSITION WHO CONCEDED THE SCORE! Their problems continue to pile as they now have officially finished with half of their league games and not only are stuck at the wooden spot, but also have the worst run rate of all 10 teams. Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad gather two points and jump up to the fourth spot. It has been a tiring but at the same time an exhilarating experience bringing you this match. With jaded fingers, Darpan Tikiya and Arya Sekhar Chakraborty bid you goodbye. Join us tomorrow for more IPL action.
Travis Head (Player of the Match): I think we saw it in the Mumbai game that we could be put under pressure even with kind of score. We knew that we would have to cash in the first six overs and my work was cut out. Then, we have a powerful batting line up. Me and Abhishek have a had a good partnership thus far. I am loving batting with him. (On being asked what would he do if he was to face his own bowling) I guess I would clear my front leg and smash. It looks ugly but it works for me!
Pat Cummins (Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain): "I feel like I wish I was batter. It was a great game of cricket. Last time in Mumbai, I felt like this won't happen again but here we are. You try your best. With that big a score even if you bowl an over of 7-8, you've done. a good job. I have given up on reading pitches now. Even when it looked like a dry pitch it has turned out to be a high scoring one. Great feeling around the team. Everyone is playing with a smile."
So, the age old dilemma looms now. In a match where 500+ runs were scored, do you give Travis Head the "player of the match" award for getting the ball rolling? Or do you take the bold call and pick a bowler? Any Pat Cummins fans here?
G Bhasker Rao: "Amazing game comes to an end. Great knocks by Head, DK, Klassen." - Who is your pick for player of the match, GBR?
Heinrich Klaasen: Yeah it was an unbelievable start for us. Special knock from Head. Coming in there I had little bit of time. Was sensible in knocking around. When it's Head day I prefer to stay at the non strikers end. I tried to take the charge after his dismissal. I am not training a lot to be honest. Had a good session two days ago, fixing my swing and a couple of drills I do. Just keeping things simple and fine tuning the little things. We knew that it was a good wicket but we just needed to execute five overs. They also batted brilliantly, we won seven of those overs so we are on the right side of the result.
Faf du Plessis (Royal Challengers Bangalore captain): Yeah much better. Proper T20 wicket. It was crazy the amount of runs that were scored today. Is a world record I guess. Yeah it's tough, we have done quite a few things behind the closed doors but the different things hasn't been working. Game of cricket is difficult when the confidence is down. When you are not on top of your game, there is nowhere to hide. We have to keep trying some different things, maybe bring in leg spin in the middle overs. Yeah I think similar from our batting perspective. We felt there were areas where we need to address. We wanted to up the ante post the powerplay with the scores being put up. The boys never gave up, there is a bit of fight in us but 30-40 runs too many from the bowling perspective. I mean that's important, you need to go away and freshen your minds. It's a mental game and when you have defeats like this you can feel that your mind can explode. Really uphill task for us
Sunrisers Hyderabad win by 25 runs.
Travis Head 102 (41) | Pat Cummins 3/43 Dinesh Karthik 83 (35) | Lockie Ferguson 2/52
Over 13000 T20 matches have been played since the format's inception and never before have we seen that many runs being scored. SRH broke their own record from a fortnight or so ago and scored a massive 287, riding on knocks that were filled with imperious ball-striking.
The only reason we did not have our jaws on the floor was because we have seen that kind of carnage twice before in the tournament. It was the 3rd time 270+ was notched up in IPL 2024. But SRH won by only 25 runs in the end. On a day like that, you have to make note of some vital bowling contributions.
The first was Mayank Markande who bowled economical 3 overs and picked up the wickets of Kohli and Patidar to peg RCB back when they were motoring along. Then, was captain Cummins, who kept on producing chances on a wicket that wasn't exactly a bowler's friend. With figures of 3/43 in 4 overs, he can hold his head up high.
RCB fans would be disappointed. However, they will take from this match an innings that would be cherished for a long time amongst that loyal fan base. Dinesh Karthik hit 83 in just 35 balls. What if he came out to bat a little bit early? Well, there is no place for "woulda shoulda and coulda" as they say.
In the end, it is SRH who take the two points and Travis Head's hundred that would remain in the memories longer.
Officially, the most runs ever in a T20 match anywhere in the world! The batters have had a day to cherish today.

19.6 Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Anuj Rawat, FOUR! An incredible match comes to an end. SRH win by 25 runs. Rawat moves across off and ramps away the low full toss over the keeper's head and that trickles away to the fence.
6 runs off the last ball will take RCB to their highest ever score in the IPL.
19.5 Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Anuj Rawat, FOUR! Slapped away for a boundary. Slower delivery on a length well wide outside off, absolutely crunches this down towards the widish long-off region.
19.4 Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Vijaykumar Vyshak, digs out the yorker around the middle stump, towards the long-on region for a single.
19.3 Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Anuj Rawat, slashes away the slower one outside off, down towards sweeper cover for a single.
19.2 Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Anuj Rawat, FOUR! That's a low full toss a shade outside off, Rawat throws his hands at that and slices it away over the short third man region, off the outside half of the bat and off to the fence it goes.
19.1 Bhuvneshwar Kumar to Anuj Rawat, FOUR! Fuller a shade outside off, Anuj reverse scoops this by opening the bat face and runs it away wide of the short third man fielder for a single.
Mere formalities now. Unless Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowls a few no balls and wides.
Ruhaan: "Been loving the CricRocket references in the commentary almost as much as the innings from Dinesh Karthik." - Thanks Ruhaan, you all can download the app here.
