Commentary

Well, that brings down the curtains on the Asia Cup 2022. We hope you enjoyed our coverage of the tournament as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. That's all from us, then. This is Pratyush Rohra, signing off on behalf of fellow mates, Shashwat Kumar and Soorya Sesha. Goodnight and Ayubowan!

Plenty of twists and turns in this tournament, with a few rivalries heating up on occasions as well. Favorites well short of their mark, while dark horses probed enough to show what a threat they are, but it's the underdogs that have stood up tall against the rest to take the title. It was a rivering two weeks of cricket, that's for sure. The party will go long into the night for the side and for the island country, which has had their fair share of ups and downs in recent times. Not to forget, the Asia Cup 2022 champions will need to play the qualifiers of the T20 World Cup next month.

Right then. Dasun Shanaka is handed the trophy and his side joins hm for the celebrations. After two weeks of exhilarating action, it's Sri Lanka who have emerged victorious to seal their sixth Asia Cup title. No one gave them a chance at the start of the tournament, especially once they lost the opening contest to Afghanistan. However, Shanaka's young side has roared back to prove their doubters wrong and come up on top to wrap up what has been a memorable tournament.

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lankan captain): I must thank the crowd. They've been supporting us massively. The crowd back home was waiting for something special from us and I hope we made him proud today. Coming to the toss, the IPL 2021 final if I'm not wrong - it was Chennai who won batting first. (Rebuilding at 58/5) That's where the good teams have done well. The youngsters knew the situation after losing 5 wickets. Bhanuka and Hasaranga put on a good partnership and Bhanuka finished well with Chamika Karunaratne. I think the last two sixes were the turning point since 170 was a good score. If it was 160, they would have felt it was chase-able. As a captain and as a team we've given that trust and belief to him (referring to Madushanka's start with the ball). (Discussion after losing the first game) It can happen to any team and it happened for a good reason. After that game we had a discussion as a team and decided that the players had to step up. (On today's fielding) It improved a lot when it came to the final. We made a lot of mistakes here and there in the league but a final is always a final. We were spot on in the field today and the commitment was 100 percent. Credit to all the players and the coaching staff. At last I must thank the Sri Lankan cricket board as well. They were supporting us and not to forget the selectors as well.

Babar Azam (Pakistan captain): (Thoughts at having Sri Lanka five down) Firstly, want to congratulate Sri Lanka for the kind of cricket they played. We dominated them in the first eight overs but Rajapaksa and Hasaranga did well to bail them out from that situation. (Conditions?) The conditions were good enough throughout. As a batting unit, we didn't play to our potential. It's always fun to play here in the UAE. Definitely, we conceded 15-20 runs extra in the end. We have plenty of positives to take from the tournament with the performances of Rizwan, Shadab and Naseem. The margin for error is slim in the finals. We didn't field too well today and the middle-order didn't fire too much either. It was Naseem's first tournament and the way he came good was a huge positive. (Fine-tuning in the batting?) It's part of the game. We can keep learning from that but we have to keep working on minimizing those mistakes in the future.

Wanindu Hasaranga is the Player of the Tournament for his pivotal runs and timely wickets all tournament. Hear from the man: When I went to the wicket at 60/5 (58/5), me and Bhanuka planned that if we can get to 150 it would be a good total. I told him that I will play my role and that's what I did. In the first few overs there was some swing but when I was batting it was really good (to bat on). I love to bowl in the sub-continent, especially in these kind of wickets. I always look to bowl at the stumps and that works for me. I tried to bowl at the stumps and bowl good balls. Our boys have done a great job throughout the tournament. After losing that game against Afghanistan our boys did really well.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa is the Player of the Match. Here is what he has to say: It was not easy out there (with five wickets dowm). Pakistan was bowling quite well but when Wanindu came in, we got together and tried to be positive. The Sri Lankan nature of the team is always to be positive and not play under pressure. We did that well. When Iftikhar was bowling, Wandindu said he will look to attack him. Fortunately, it came off well for both of us. (Mindset and approach) I had to change my game because we were 57-5. (Target?) When Chris came to speak to us in the tenth over, I said this should be a 140-150 pitch, if we assess the conditions well. It was a great feeling. This is a game of momentum and we set that momentum in the last over which helped us win the game.

Ashen Bandara was on as a substitute today and was absolutely magnificent. Props to him for putting on a stellar show! Fittingly, he wins a sponsor award for the best catch of the match.

Loud chants of "Sri Lanka! Sri Lanka!" ringing around the Dubai International Stadium now. There are plenty of Sri Lankan flags out in the crowd and amongst the crowd. The party is only getting started.

Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan): If any team decides to clinch a championship based on the toss, then they don't deserve to be champions. We won the toss, but they played like champions as they capitalised on the mistakes we did. We put on a fight, but they managed to take off the game towards the end. To be fair, they deserved to win this match.

Chris Silverwood (Sri Lanka Head Coach): (On Mendis setting the tone) He absolutely did. He set the tone at the top for us which we set a challenge for him to do. He did it beautifully. There was that confidence; the talent was there within the team. Our cricket was going from strength-to-strength and the planning and execution were there. Dilshan coming through the young left-armer - we had a young seam attack and the way the young players came through was really good. The senior ones stepped up as well.

Kusal Mendis: I'm very happy to score the runs. Pathum and I played throughout the tournament, and got the big runs but couldn't get it quite right in the last couple of games. A little bit early in the innings, we were in trouble but then I and Bhanuka went out and played our natural game.
