It turned out to be a pivotal innings in the end from Samarawickrama and she has looked rock solid at the top of the order. A huge victory for Sri Lanka, not necessarily in terms of the margin but as far as keeping themselves on track in the tournament is concerned. As their skipper mentioned, however, they have loads to work upon with the bat. The UAE will take this with a pinch of salt and start afresh when they come out against India in a couple of days' time and will certainly look to keep up their top-class bowling performance from today going ahead.

Harshitha Samarawickrama is the Player of the Match. Here is what she has to say: I just play my normal game. I have to try and do that till the end. (Pressure while wickets were tumbling?) No, not much pressure. I don't think about the pressure and just look to play my normal game.

Chamari Athapaththu (Sri Lanka captain): Finally we won but I'm not happy about our team's performance. As a top team we're not playing to our potential. Tough games coming up next week so we have to improve our batting. I'm really happy about our bowling performance. After the rain, we bowled really good areas and stuck to our plans. But as a batting unit we should unit. (On Harshitha Samarawickrama's batting) She's an upcoming batter in our team and she was really good today and yesterday also. I hope she will continue her performances in the coming games.

Chaya Mughal (UAE captain): When you're playing against such an elite team, you have a lot of plans. To execute those plans is something we were looking forward to. The bowlers did that quite well, so pleased with that. Rain interuppted the batters flow and the result would have been different if we had a full 20-over game. (Youngsters in the side) It gives UAE a longer life. The future looks really bright. I keep telling them that women's cricket is really flourishing, in the world and in the UAE. It's giving all our youngsters a big boost and they're pushing us forward.

Make no mistake, the Sri Lankans have got out of jail here. 109 is all their batters could muster after a clinical bowling display by the UAE attack. Having already lost their tournament opener to India, they were up against it to get their campaign back on track.

Theertha Satish showed positive intent from the word go and even though Esha Oza departed early, the UAE were always going to be at the forefront unless they found a way to botch it up. Alas though, with the score reading 20/1 at the end of 4 overs, a bout of thunder and lightning threw their plans off guard with the players having to take shelter and the covers coming on.

It was a long and frustrating wait post which the contest finally resumed. The revised target was 66 off 11 overs, meaning that the asking rate at the time of resumption was just over 6.5 to the over. But the long break came with a massive dent in momentum, meaning that a string of dot deliveries was all it took for the pressure to mount.

And that's exactly what happened. Sri Lanka were impeccable with the ball with the spinners taking centerstage and they were extremely well backed up on the field as well. One after another, wickets continued to tumble and Theertha's wicket was the final nail in the coffin, even as skipper Chaya Mughal tried keeping them afloat. They have been left ruing their luck given what could have been but again, that's down to conjecture and assumption. This is how the sport is at times - it is harsh, but the UAE can be mighty proud of how they turned up today. Presentation coming up shortly...
