Alright then. That's that from this World Cup League 2 match, Papua New Guinea turned it around from yesterday's loss and trampled United Arab Emirates. There's plenty of cricketing action still coming up, stay tuned to Sportskeeda. On behalf of my dear friend and co-commentator Arya, this is Pradeep signing off, stay safe and take care!
Chad Soper (Player of the Match): Yeah very stocked more for the boys than myself. It was a very important win for us as a group. Yeah you can see that they cant hide their smiles today. We have a great batting unit and bowling unit can also chip in when needed. Really nice to put up the performance we did today. I just try and do my job when I get the ball. I will take that onboard.
Assad Vala (Papua New Guinea captain): Really happy with the way we bounced back from yesterday's performance, boys got into it today, to be honest it was a good toss to lose, I wanted to bowl first, the wicket was dry and bit of cracks open, was happy to bat first and the batters did well. The first 40 overs we did well, we didn't finish well today, I think we can put it together in the next game, it would be good but the batters were positive, kept the scoreboard ticking. Definitely the plan for us, confidence is high and hopefully we can pick up a few wins and get the confidence before the play offs, lots of credit to Chad Soper and other bowlers.
Chundangapoyil Rizwan(United Arab Emirates captain): We've been doing collectively well but we need to work on a lot, go back to drawing room and there are crucial matches ahead. It's important to look ahead, learn from the mistakes, will be focused on the task ahead.
Papua New Guinea win by 131 runs
Papua New Guinea 262 all-out in 49.1 overs Sese Bau 74(76) | Tony Ura 54(43) Karthik Meiyappan 4/49(10) | Aryan Lakra 3/38(10)
UAE 131 all-out in 34.2 overs Muhammad Waseem 24(17) | Zahoor Khan 23(25) Chad Sopers 5/25(10) | Assad Vala 1/15(5)
It will go down as one of the finest days in the history of PNG cricket as they thrashed UAE by 131 runs in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 game. It was a dominating display from Papua New Guinea and right from ball one, UAE never looked in the game and surrendered quite tamely in the end.
Chap Soper was the wrecker in chief with the ball in hand while the other bowlers also chipped with significant contributions. With the likes of Muhammad Waseem at the top of the order, UAE would have backed themselves to chase down 263. Waseem was dropped early on in the innings and made PNG pay for it with a few delightful shots of the front foot and the backfoot.
A 26-run opening partnership came to an end when Aryan Lakra was removed by Semo Kamea. Chad Sopers was brought into the attack and he made his presence felt right from the opening over. He took a wicket each in his first three overs which put UAE on the backfoot. There was no looking back from there on as wickets kept tumbling one after the other.
Waseem and Rohan Mustafa’s departure pushed them to a corner but Vriitya Aravind and Asif Khan batted sensibly for a while to build a partnership. However, a terrible mix-up between the two cost Vriitya his wicket and that proved to be the final nail in the coffin for them. Chad Sopers kept chipping away with the wickets and ended up bagging his 5th in his penultimate over.
Zahoor Khan chanced his arms around towards the closing stages of the match and got himself a few boundaries before getting castled by Riley Hekure. Chad Sopers will take the match ball as he was the wrecker-in-chief, finishing with exceptional figures of 5/25 in 10 overs. Muhammad Waseem was the top scorer for UAE with 24.
Earlier in the day, the Papua New Guinea batters made a good account of themselves, scoring a more than competitive 262. They lost a cluster of wickets towards the back end but by then the openers had laid the platform for a good score. In the end, they turned out to be far too good in the bowling department. It was one traffic right from the start till the end and it will be one of their finest victories in ODI history.
And that is it. Papua New Guinea wraps this up and they win by 131 runs.
34.2 Riley Hekure to Zahoor Khan, OUT! BOWLED HIM! THAT'S IT! PNG crush UAE in this all important encounter! Change of pace doing the trick, angled into Zahoor on the middle and leg, plays all around it too early and misses, goes through to rattle the stumps.
Zahoor Khan b Riley Hekure 23 (25b 4x3 6x0)
34.1 Riley Hekure to Zahoor Khan, OH! FOUR! Just short of mid-off and has gone through to the long-off fence. Zahoor has hit that one so hard, went quickly to mid-off, ricochets off to the fence for a boundary.
An exceptional spell from Sopers. He is getting a massive round of applause from his teammates. Absolutely fantastic. Hazrat Bilal seemed to be putting up a price tag on his wicket, he decided to dead bat everything that came his way in the last four deliveries of the over.
