Commentary

Thanks a lot for joining us- Mohul Bhowmick and Shashwat Kumar- here today. The West Indies managed to get a grip on the world's number one T20 side, India and beat them to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. Hardik Pandya's men will be keen on coming back strongly. Rovman Powell (The West Indies' captain): We wanted to start the series on a positive note, and the guys did it. It was our game to lose- they did not have a set batter and we had to stem the flow of runs. We saw how the Indians bowled, and this gave us an idea on how to bowl on this surface. We had a good powerplay with the bat but then we slowed down a bit because they had a few really good spinners. This series will be decided on how well our batters do against their spinners in the middle overs. Once you get a start, you need to convert it. Holder was fantastic- he read the conditions really well and gave no pace to the Indian batters at all.

Hardik Pandya (India captain): We were always in the chase. We made a few mistakes, but that's okay. A young team will make mistakes and we will grow together. We were in control throughout the game, but could not quite pull it off. It's very difficult to chase totals if you lose wickets regularly. When we lost a couple of wickets in between, this halted our momentum. We felt that we had to give two wrist spinners an opportunity today, while Axar lends a lot of solidity with his batting as well. Mukesh was brilliant. He is a genuinely nice guy and is someone who wants to contribute to the team's cause. Tilak was fantastic too- what a lovely way to get your first runs in international cricket with a couple of sixes!

Jason Holder is the Player of the Match! Here's what he has to say: I have been playing a lot of cricket in the recent past, so it is important to take breaks and come back fresh. I have always prided myself to not give too many runs away, and luckily, things went in my favour today. It was a total team effort. We got early wickets, and that is very important in a T20 game. As I said, this was a team effort, and I am happy to have come out on the winning side.

It came down to India needing ten runs off the last over, with the unlikely pair of Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav at the crease. Kuldeep was bowled off the first ball bowled by Romario Shepherd and Arshdeep ran himself out silly some time later.

Mukesh Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal found themselves in a mix-up outside the boundary, but it did not aid India's cause at all. In the end, Shepherd managed to keep his nerve and deliver an excellent victory for his team. Of late, Shepherd's death bowling had been under the scanner, but he proved himself rather well today.

Although Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav had managed to string together a partnership in the middle-overs, it was the failure of all the others in the much-vaunted batting lineup that caused this ordeal for the visitors. Skipper Hardik Pandya tried his best to prop the score up but in the end, departed with his hands tied.

If not for debutant Tilak, who made a brilliant start to his international career with a fabulous 39, India would have been in deep trouble. The openers Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill flattered to deceive and this was one of the biggest reasons why they could not chase this total down.

However, a lot of the blame has to go to the middle-order, who just did not rise to the occasion. The bowlers of the West Indies were on top of the game throughout, and managed to seal the deal for their team at the end.

Spinner Akeal Hosein and seamer Jason Holder were perhaps the most economical of them, while left-armer Obed McCoy picked up a couple of important wickets too. This win allows the Windies to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.
