Commentary

With that, we finish our coverage of this, the 1st ODI from the Harare Sports Club. It was a match to be remembered from start to finish but the brilliance of Teja Nidamanuru was too good not to be rewarded with his team's win! We join you again on Thursday for the 2nd game of what is expected to be a pulsating series. For now, this is the pair of Arya and Bidipto, saying good bye. Keep following Sportskeeda!

Teja Nidamanuru has been adjudged the Player of the Match! Here is what he has to say.

Teja Nidamanuru: (On whether he should bat higher up the order) Well the composition of the side is such that I have to wait for my turn to bat. But we have a lot of self-belief and quality in out line-up. When Shariz and I came together, the idea was to take it deep by hanging in there and not doing anything silly. We were calculating things ball-by-ball as the innings progressed, and I'm glad that Paul could play those stunning shots to help us finish the job! A lot of credit for this win has to go to our bowling at the start of the day. We picked up wickets and did not allow Zimbabwe to get off to a flying start. That helped immensely.

Scott Edwards (Netherlands captain): It was a brilliant performance by Teja and Shariz that won us the game! At the halfway stage we were a bit disappointed having given away a few too many runs but the batting effort till the two of them got together kept the disappointment going to be honest. But the way we pulled it off in the end was spectacular, that's all I can say! Fred Klaassen and Paul van Meekeren were impressive early on. If there is a little bit of help in the wicket for them, they tend to give us quick wickets regularly.

Craig Ervine (Zimbabwe captain): Netherlands utilised those early conditions very well. Great contributions at the back end which helped us score 249. We actually thought it will play better. Freddie and Paul utilised that very well. I thought 280-290 would have been a good score. Maiden hundred from Nidamanuru and what a time to get that. We dropped two or three chances and it’s always difficult against a batter who is going great guns. Hopefully next time, we can come out with a positive frame of mind and play better. Sean Williams should be alright for Thursday.

Zimbabwe began this innings in the best possible manner by bowling tight lines and lengths. They put the pressure on the Dutch batting by picking up wickets at regular intervals and also stemmed the flow of runs. But little did they imagine that the visitors would go on to win this match after being 64/5 in 20.3 overs!

Colin Ackermann played decently to score a half-century but that knock wasn't enough when he was cleaned up by Wellington Masakadza. The left-arm spinner was having a field day, finishing with figures of 3 for 36 in his 10 overs. Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Ryan Burl and the rest of the bowlers had all done well to keep the asking rate well out of the Dutch reach.

Teja Nidamanuru and Shariz Ahmad came together when the hope for a win was just about finished for the Netherlands. They began rather slowly and were keen only on singles which seemed way too less at that stage.

But some poor ground fielding both inside and outside the circle and a couple of drop catches from the otherwise outstanding Masakadza, helped in shifting momentum towards the Dutch. The duo brought up 50 runs together and in a matter of a few overs, strung a 100-run stand for the 7th wicket!

Nidamanuru went on to play some lovely shots against both seam and spin to bring the asking rate down to a manageable situation. A mix-up between Shariz and him did see a run out which meant that Shariz had to walk back to the pavilion but Nidamanuru continued in his merry way to bring up his 1st ODI hundred!

Paul van Meekeren joined hands and hit some lusty blows right at the end to seal a massive victory for the visitors! It was their first win away from home since 2014. As for the hosts, an inspired effort with the bat and then some fine bowling for a good part of the second 50 overs resulted in a heartbreaking loss!
