Turkey edged past Austria courtesy of a brace from Merih Demiral and a wonderful last-ditch save from Mert Gunok. Vincenzo Montella's men defended with a lot of passion and precision. They looked exceptional without the ball as they held their shape brilliantly throughout the match. They absorbed all the pressure from Austria and then struck them on the counter. They also made full use of the set-pieces and made Austria pay. Overall, it was a show of resilience, belief and bravery which has helped them progress to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Euro 2024.
An excellent buildup from Austria as Baumgartner comes up with a fantastic header but it was equalled with a terrific save from Gunok. How did he pull it off? It was outrageous from the Turkish custodian. It was headed with power and precision but it wasn't enough to break Gunok's resolve.
A brilliant break forward from Kadioglu as he ran past several defenders before laying it forward to Yilmaz, who cuts in and then hammers a shot at the target. But Pentz comes up with a brilliant save to keep Austria in the game.
It is Gregoritsch who finds the back of the net from a well-worked Austrian corner. Posch flicks on a header from Sabitzer's corner and it falls kindly for Gregoritsch, who was unmarked in the far post. He hammered it past Gunok to keep Austria in the game. Austria 1-2 Turkey
It is Demiral again as the big Turkish centre-back rises the highest and despite all the pressure he heads home from Guler's corner to hand Turkey a 2-0 lead. Turkey have been exceptional from set-pieces, causing all sorts of troubles for the Austrian defence. Austria 0-2 Turkey.
Prass sprays forward a brilliantly weighted defence-splitting ball to Arnautovic, who couldn't get his shot away quickly and was closed by Gunok. An excellent save from the Turkish custodian.
A frantic start from Turkey in the first minute saw Turkey score a goal from a corner courtesy of Demiral. It pegged Austria back but they have had their chances in the initial exchanges. However, as the match went on, Turkey were exceptional with their shape off the ball and also looked decent in possession. With every failed move, Austrian players looked visibly frustrated. As they enter the break, trailing by a goal, it will be incredibly important for Ralf Rangnick to come up with something different in the next 45 minutes.
A very similar corner to that of Turkey, this time Sabitzer's ball was not dealt with by the Turkey defence and Baumgartner almost made them pay. But he failed to get the proper connection.
A brilliant corner from Turkey catches the entire Austrian defence napping. Pentz somehow keeps it out but it falls kindly for Demiral, who blasts it into the net. A swift start for Turkey. Austria 0-1 Turkey.
Austria have made four changes to the starting lineup that won 3-2 against Netherlands. Kevin Danso, Phillipp Mwene, Christoph Baumgartner and Konrad Laimer are in. Maximilian Wöber, Alexander Prass and Florian Grillitsch are on the bench whereas Patrick Wimmer is suspended for this clash.
On the other hand, Turkey has also made three changes from their 2-1 victory against the Czech Republic. Orkun Kökçü, Abdülkerim Bardakcı and Kaan Ayhan are in; Salih Özcan drops to the bench while both Samet Akaydin and captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu are suspended.
Turkey XI: Gunok, Muldur, Demiral, Bardakci, Kadioglu, Ayhan, Yuksek, Guler, Kokcu, Yildiz, Yilmaz.
