That wasn't a very high-quality football as both teams were drab and unimaginative going forward. At times it seemed as if both teams were not looking to take risks. Eventually, it was a matter of a moment from Randall Kolo Muani came off the bench and found some space as the shot got a wicked deflection off Vertonghen and beat Casteels in goal. Belgium were equally poor as they failed to move the ball around quickly with zeal and it came back to haunt them. Les Blues are now in the quarterfinals and will play against the winner of the upcoming match between Portugal and Slovenia.
Randall Kolo Muani breaks the deadlock for France. Griezmann finds Kounde in the box, who plays it back to Tchouameni and he puts it back to Kolo Muani, who loses his marker and hits a vicious shot. It takes a massive deflection off Vertonghen and beats Casteels. It is a Vertonghen own goal but Deschamps and the players hardly care as they lead in Dusseldorf. France 1-0 Belgium.
The Belgian defence thwarts a Griezmann free-kick but Kounds collects the loose ball and delivers a great ball into the area. Thuram gets on the end of it but his header it just over the target. Big, big chance wasted to break the deadlock.
An entertaining first half which had spells of dominance from either team. However, France will enter the dressing room with more confidence, given their dominance in the last 10 minutes before the half-time whistle. While Belgium will be happy that they could absorb France's pressure without conceding. In attack, Griezmann looks lively whereas Lukaku and Openda have combined brilliantly for Belgium upfront with Doku playing a big role on the right flank.
