Until next time, this is your commentator, Sayantan Guha, signing off. We'll be back with more action from Euro 2024 soon!
Denmark pushed ahead to restore parity, but left gaps behind, and Musiala was perfectly positioned to thread the needle, and double Germany's lead. The Germans had plenty of more opportunities to extend their lead, but lacked composure. But they had enough to see the two-goal lead over the line.
Denmark are pushing forward in search of a goal, leaving behind acres of room, and Florian Wirtz sends Fullkurg through down the middle. The striker has his effort blocked by Kasper Schmeichel and the linesman waves the offside flag immediately.
Denmark are defending in sixes and sevens, and Musiala walks down the pitch and curls it into the bottom right corner!
Nagelsmann will have a few headaches regarding his team's finishing.
How has Kai Havertz not lobbed it in. The Arsenal forward glided past Joachim Andersen with an exquisite touch and went one-on-one with the keeper. However, he decided to dink the ball over the onrushing Kasper Schmeichel and in the end, his attempt was too cute and tad wide. Germany really missing a natural finisher here.
This one won't be overturned. There's no chance! Kai Havertz picks the bottom right and thumps it past an outstretched Schmeichel. Finally, the deadlock is broken and the Arsenal star showcased some enviable calm under pressure.
Oh Denmark! The sky was pouring a few minutes back and now, it's the Danish hearts. A rogue cross from David Raum strikes the hand of Andersen, who could've been a hero minutes ago, and the VAR deems it as a penalty.
Kai Havertz is stepping up to take it.
At the start of the first half it was Germany who had a goal ruled out, and at the start of second it's Denmark. Joachim Andersen was offside when the ball fell for him.
A freekick is hooved into the edge of the German penalty area by Chrsitian Eriksen, and after some prolonged pinball it's Joachim Anderson who buries the ball into the back of the net. Denmark are euphoric. But we have another VAR check here!
Denmark get us underway. No changes made for either sides. Referee Michael Oliver calls the two captains and informs them that there's possibility of a storm sometime soon. Just making them aware.
It seems like it's been an eternity since Schlotterbeck headed the ball into the Danish net but still had his goal disallowed. But in match minutes, it's just been a little over 40 minutes. But the half has packed in every bit of adventure one can imagine. Germany looked relentless at the start, but they've failed to find the back of the net, at least legally. After the lightning-induced suspension, Denmark came out marching and created a glorious opportunity right before the half-time break. But Manuel Neuer stood firm and left the scoreboard untouched.
There's another 45 minutes of intense action awaiting us, and if neither team can still break the deadlock, then there's plenty more drama to be unraveled.
Christian Eriksen is evergreen, forever aware, and his gorgeous through ball releases Delaney down the middle. The latter squares the ball for Hojlund, but the Manchester United striker lacks sharpness and Manuel Neuer saves Germany's blushes with an inch-perfect outing. It could've spelt trouble for Germany right at the end.
Germany get the ball rolling again, under trecherous conditions.
- That's the update we have for you at the moment.
Huge claps of thunder above, and referee Michael Oliver decides to pause the game.
A hopeful cross from the right lands for Maehle, who megs Andrich but is brought down by the midfielder immediately. A freekick for Denmark and it's just outside the box.
A glorious long ball from deep, a touch from the heavens by Christian Eriksen, and a octopus-like block from Antonio Rudiger. This is the quality you'd expect from two sides of this caliber.
Well, this why. Gundogan hooves a hopeful clearance up the field, and Leroy Sane is instantly all over it. He outpaces Alexander Bah, and glides past Christiansen before being brought down outside the opposition area.
Antonio Rudiger delivers a peach of a lobbed ball into the area, and there's Kai Havertz, who timed his run to perfection, beating the offisde trap. His effort isn't vicious but wicked, yet, Schmeichel does enough to push it away.
Nico Schlotterbeck rises the highest inside the area to thump the ball into the net from an inch-perfect Toni Kroos corner. However, the referee has decided to chalk off the goal! But why?
Germany get us underway, and they'll be attacking from right to left.
The pre-match ramble is out of the way. The players are out in the middle, and we're set to witness the hair-raising national anthems.
Julien Nagelsmann has opted for a few tweaks to his lineup. Florian Wirtz makes way for Leroy Sane. A bit of a surprise if you ask me. David Raum and Nico Schlotterbeck come in at the back for Maximilian Mittelstädt and the suspended Jonathan Tah.
Denmark will be confident in their ability to cause an upset, having demonstrated their resilience with three draws in Group C. Christian Eriksen has been their creator-in-chief. At the same time, both Jonas Wind and Rasmus Højlund have shown they can trouble any defense.
Germany showcased their strength in Group A, securing comfortable victories over Scotland and Hungary. A dramatic stoppage-time equalizer from Niclas Füllkrug against Switzerland ultimately sealed their position as group winners. Key players such as Jamal Musiala, Toni Kroos, and Florian Wirtz have been impressive. With the support of a passionate home crowd at Signal Iduna Park, the Julian Nagelsmann-coached outfit would be eager to advance to their fourth EURO quarter-final in the last five tournaments.
It's the Round of 16. It's the host nation. Germany looked relentless at the start of the tournament. But since then, Switzerland have exposed the chinks in the armor of Julen Nagelsmann's side. They are still the favorites because they find a way.
But Die Mannschaft faces Denmark, a stubborn bunch. Denmark know only to defy the odds; Christian Eriksen knows only to defy the odds. So the writing is on the wall for an absolute Euro classic. Let me, Sayantan Guha, take you through what promises to be an enthralling affair at the Signal Iduna Park.
