Austria have done the unthinkable as they reign supreme over the Dutch in a five-goal thriller. They also win Group D following a 1-1 draw between France and Poland. It was a sensational effort by Ralf Rangnick's men and they truly deserve the three points and all the appreciation that comes along with it. While many people believed them to be the third-best team in the group, the likes of Sabitzer, Baumgartner, Laimer, etc have proven that they are here to change that narrative.
A brilliant run by Sabitzer before he plays a one-two with Prass, who gets Baumgartner into the play. The substitute spots Sabitzer's movement into the penalty area and plays a perfectly weighted ball and the Borussia Dortmund man does the rest with aplomb. Austria are back with the lead. Netherlands 2-3 Austria.
A brilliant buildup from Gakpo who delivers the ball into the penalty area which was brought down by Weghorst and Depay finds himself in space, controls it brilliantly and slams it past Pentz. The referee rules it out momentarily because of a potential handball but after consulting VAR he lets the goal stand. A sigh of relief for the Dutch.
Van de Ven and Wijnaldum come on for Ake and Reijnders respectively.
Baumgartner, Laimer and Querfeld replace Grillitsch, Wimmer, Lienhart. Rangnick looking to freshen things up at vital positions.
It was a good buildup started by Wimmer, who finds Sabitzer in the final third. The midfielder waited for Grillitsch's run into the penalty area. A beautiful cross from Grillitsch finds Schmid in the middle, who heads the ball home with a diving effort. Netherlands 1-2 Austria
Geertruida wins back possession and plays in towards Simons, who ran through the midfield and then plays Gakpo to his left in space and the Liverpool man hammers home the equalizer. He gave Pentz no chance in goal as it was a thunderous effort. Netherlands 1-1 Austria
Austria have been the better team in the first half and that too by a long margin. The Dutch lacked creativity for the majority of the first 45 minutes. The introduction of Simons did add some guile to the midfield but overall it was not enough for Koeman's men to find the equalizer. Meanwhile, Austria were extremely pro-active with their pressing, movement and deliveries, especially from wide areas. Rangnick will expect more of the same in the second half.
Koeman has had enough as he turns to Xavi Simons, who replaces Veerman.
How did Malen miss there? A brilliant buildup from Depay, who plays it to Reijnders and his subsequent pass finds Malen in space in the Austrian penalty area. However, with only the goalkeeper to beat, Malen scuffs his shot wide. Massive massive chance missed by the Dutch.
Very unfortunate for Malen as his intention of blocking Prass' cross inside the penalty area saw him turn it into his own net. It was another beautiful move orchestrated by Arnautovic and Prass as Austria are deservingly ahead. Netherlands 0-1 Austria
