PEEEEP PEEEEEP PEEEEP!! That's all from Berlin as the Netherlands edged past Turkey to progress to the European Championships semifinal after 20 years. They came from behind to beat the Turks courtesy of an own-goal from Muldur. It was a nerve-wracking game from start to finish and Turkey gave their all but in the end, it was not enough. Vincenzo Montella's men were a joy to watch in this tournament and they will leave the ground with their heads held high. Meanwhile, the Netherlands will enjoy this moment and then quickly get ready to face England in the semifinal.
Verbruggen has kept the Netherlands in this game with that sensational save. A cross from the right gets a touch from Bardakci and was going it but the Dutch goalkeeper threw his body on the line and tipped it wide.
Dumbries, in space, drills in a low cross and finds Gakpo, who wrestles ahead of Muldur at the far post. The Turkish full-back tries to fight his ground but can only get a horrible touch which diverts the ball past Gunok into the back of the net. Very unfortunate for Turkey but the the Dutch are over the moon as they lead for the first time in this match. Netherlands 2-1 Turkey
A brilliantly worked short corner for the Dutch before Depay whips in the ball and finds De Vrij in space, completely unmarked in the penalty area. The veteran defender hammers home the header to bring the Dutch back into the game. Netherlands 1-1 Turkey.
A brilliant cross from the left finds Weghorst in space but it is a very tight angle as the big forward controls and forces a big save from Gunok. Netherlands are inching close with every move.
Verbruggen has kept the Netherlands in the game with a fantastic save. The free-kick was blocked by the Dutch defence but the rebound fell kindly for Yildiz, who hammered a long ranger towards goal. It was Verbruggen's awareness, which saved Netherlands as Ayhan failed to slot home the rebound courtesy of some good defending from Weghorst.
It has been a sensational first 45 minutes for Turkey as they showed more hunger to find the back of the net than their opponents. They showed great passion and courage to opt for the long ball approach and with runners like Yilmaz, Yildiz, Muldur and Kadioglu, it has helped them immensely. They have caught out the Dutch defence multiple times in the first half. However, it was a moment of brilliance from Arda Guler which helped them break the deadlock. It was a magical cross from Guler's weaker right foot and all it needed was a header from Akaydin.
An overhit corner from Turkey is resurrected by Guler, who unleashes a brilliant cross with his weaker right foot. It was perfectly weighted and it only required a header from Samet Akaydin. The entire Dutch backline was ball-watching and even Verbruggen was in no man's land as Turkey struck first in Berlin.
Coming this far in a tournament, most managers wouldn't want to make too many changes to their starting lineups. Ronald Koeman has followed that philosophy by naming an unchanged lineup. But Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella didn't have that luxury as he made three changes to his lineup and all of them were forced. Orkun Kökçü, İsmail Yüksek and Merih Demiral are all suspended for this match and they are replaced by Samet Akaydin, Salih Özcan and captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu.
Netherlands XI: Verbruggen, Dumfries, de Vrij, van Dijk, Ake, Reijnders, Schouten, Bergwijn, Simons, Gakpo, Depay.
Turkey XI: Gunok, Muldur, Akaydin, Bardakci, Kadioglu, Ayhan, Ozcan, Guler, Calhanoglu, Yildiz, Yilmaz.
