It's all over and despite pressure from Italy right at the end that sees Donnarumma go up for a corner, Spain see out a second consecutive victory thanks to that Calafiori own goal early in the second half. The only surprise is that there was only one goal in this one!

The move starts with Yamal taking the ball out of defence and after Spain work the ball across the pitch from right to left, Williams cuts back inside and unleashes a near-perfect bending shot from just inside the penalty area which smacks off the crossbar. So unlucky.

65' Retegui and Zaccagni in for Chiesa and Scamacca as Spalletti tries out new attacking solutions. After all the substitutions, Italy seems to be playing in a 4-4-1-1 formation. Cambiasso and Zaccagni are on the flanks in midfield and Pellegrini is supporting Retegui in attack.

After a couple of misses in quick succession from Pedri, it's Calafiori who puts the ball into his own net to give Spain the lead. It's a fast Williams cross from the left that ultimately causes the damage, with Calafiori's attempted clearance after a glancing header from Morata and a touch by Donnarumma going in instead.

52' Pedri (Spain) misses the target.Cucurella pulls back after a smart release from Williams and it looks like Pedri will get the first goal of the night but he manages to direct his attempt just wide instead. That's a let-off for Italy.

50' The very definition of end-to-end. This is a cracker of a match. By the way, milimetres saved Italy from Pedri having a crack at goal inside Donnarumma's penalty area there.

48' Cambiaso replaced Frattesi but he is playing on the right, with Chiesa moving on the opposite flank. Spalletti understood that Di Lorenzo needed some help against Williams, also adding more muscles in midfield with Cristante.

45+1' Chiesa (Italy) misses the target.Chiesa has three team-mates in support but opts to take the shot on himself and fires it high and wide. He looks disappointed as he turns away towards his own half... not to be, on this occasion.

41' Spain are playing very well. They are creating a lot of chances. Moreover, Spain are finding different ways to get to Donnarumma's goal. All they are missing is a goal.

38' Great saves by Donnarumma, timely tackles by Calafiori and Bastoni. This is what is keeping Italy in the game at the moment, but Spain have been pretty much dominating the game so far.

35' What a sliding tackle by Calafiori on the edge of the box! That Pedri ball would have left Morata with only Donnarumma to beat.

33' Italy are struggling to circulate the ball well and the Azzurri are often forced to try to reach their forwards with unproductive long balls, which make life easy for the Spanish defenders.

30' Well, no goals yet but this might be the best first half hour in the tournament. Two top class sides going at one another, lots of thrills, lots of great tackling, two world-class saves, good atmosphere. Viva EURO 2024, I say!

26' If the game was ending now, Donnarumma would have probably been chosen as the Player of the Match. Already three difficult saves for the Paris goalkeeper.

24' Donnarumma (Italy) makes a save.That's another good stop from the Italy goalkeeper. We've seen a lot of goals from outside the penalty area at this tournament and Fabián Ruiz looks to add another one but Donnarumma is equal to his effort, tipping it over his bar in spectacular fashion.

21' No product but that's twice now that Williams has had the ball at his feet, has taken a decision that it's 'me v you' and Di Lorenzo has come off second best each time. No product matters but Williams' endorphins will be going wild!  Along the lines of: 'I've got him!'

19' I wouldn't say that Italy are 'double-marking' Yamal but Pellegrini is most definitely charged with closing the space in front of Dimarco when the 16-year-old tries to cut inside on to his left-foot. Simply smart, but not something Croatia excelled at.

17' Spain have started the match very well. They are moving the ball with principle. They have to be careful though with the balls behind their defence.

14' How much have Spain trained with the expectation of that overlap from Dimarco and with the acceptance that Scamacca's head flicks can set Frattesi free in behind?  Spain are playing well offensively, but they look stretched when Italy break.

9' During that respite for treatment, no Spain players went over for a mini-conference with their coach. But he did spend a decent amount of it in close conference with Pablo Amo, his assistant, and Spain's keeper-coach shouted out some instructions to Unai Simón.

Italy recovered from their first-minute setback against Albania to claim a hard-fought victory in their curtain-raiser. The Azzurri beat Spain at both of their last two tournaments, winning 2-0 in the round of 16 eight years ago before edging to a semi-final penalty shoot-out victory at Wembley at EURO 2020. The reigning champions are under no illusion about the size of the task facing them, but defender Alessandro Bastoni says they will "focus on Spain's weaknesses and hit them there".

Spain laid down a marker in their opener in Berlin, scoring three superbly worked first-half goals in a comfortable win against Croatia. Fabián Ruiz was the star performer, providing a perfectly-weighted assist for Álvaro Morata before doubling the lead with a low strike of his own, but it was a memorable afternoon too for 16-year-old Lamine Yamal, whose magnificent cross was turned in by Dani Carvajal for La Roja's third. The three-time winners head into their latest meeting with fellow EURO 2012 finalists Italy with the wind firmly in their sails.

This is Italy's 11th EURO appearance, and an eighth in succession – they last failed to qualify in 1992. In contrast, they have missed out on the last two World Cups.

The Azzurri have been champions of Europe on two occasions – in 1968 and again at EURO 2020. They were also runners-up in 2000 and 2012.

Champions in 1964, 2008 and 2012 – the only side to win successive European Championships – Spain were also runners-up in 1984.

Only Germany, with 14, have participated in more EURO finals than Spain, who have made it through qualification for the nation's 12th appearance at the tournament. They are making their eighth EURO appearance in a row and 11th in the last 12 editions, missing out only in 1992 in that sequence.

For the fifth UEFA European Championship in succession, Spain take on Italy – this time at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen in the second round of Group B games at UEFA EURO 2024.Italy have eliminated Spain from the last two tournaments, prevailing on penalties in the semi-finals of EURO 2020 having triumphed in the round of 16 at EURO 2016. Spain, however, got the better of the Azzurri in the EURO 2008 quarter-finals – also on spot kicks – before a record 4-0 victory in the final four years later to become the first team to retain the European Championship.The pair are level on three points at the top of Group B after opening victories on 15 June. Spain brushed aside Croatia 3-0 in Berlin thanks to first-half goals from Álvaro Morata (29), Fabián Ruiz (32) and Dani Carvajal (45+2), while Italy kicked off their title defence with a 2-1 comeback win against Albania in Dortmund, Alessandro Bastoni (11) and Nicolò Barella (16) turning round the game after the Azzurri had fallen behind after 23 seconds – the fastest goal in EURO history.
