AEW Dynamite New Year's Smash Live Results (December 28, 2022): Former WWE star attacks Wardlow with a metal pipe, Samoa Joe defends TNT title

AEW Dynamite New Year's Smash Results: Jon Moxley and former WWE Superstar battle rising stars; major title bout; The Elite brawl with Death Triangle

Darby Allin's music hits and he jumps Joe from behind. Joe is livid as Darby signals his intentions of coming after the TNT Championship.

Wardlow is slowly regaining consciousness and making his way back to his feet. Joe clocks him with the title belt and goes and gets scissors. The referee tries to stop him and Joe takes him out with a headbutt.

Joe has Wardlow in the corner and goes for the 10-count punches. Bad move. Wardlow hits a powerbomb. Wardlow goes for a second but his knee gives way. Joe hits a chopblock and locks in the Rear Naked Choke. Wardlow is out! Samoa Joe retains the TNT Championship!

Samoa Joe def. Wardlow

Wardlow somehow leaps onto the top rope and hits a senton, taking down Joe. He the catches Joe with a headbutt and a lariat for a two-count.

Wardlow his a Senton off the top rope. Joe stays down but Wardlow can't get the cover. Both wrestlers beat the referees 10-count and exchange right hands.

Wardlow is finally back in the ring but it's all Joe right now. Samoa Joe is driving his elbow into Wardlow's injured knee. Wardlow is struggling to get back to his feet.

Wardlow is back on his feet. The EMTs try to stop him but Wardlow takes them back out with right hands. Joe is all over Wardlow as soon as he gets back in the ring and sends Wardlow crashing back out to ringside.

The doctor and EMTs are back out to check on Wardlow.

Samoa Joe (C) vs Wardlow [for the TNT Championship]

Referees try to hold back Wardlow but he wants to compete despite the injury. It's all Wardlow for the first few moments but Joe hits back soon. Wardlow is back with shoulder charges in the corner but he still seems to be favouring the right leg. Joe hits a brutal kneebreaker to take back control.

It's Samoa Joe vs Wardlow next for the TNT Championship. What state is Wardlow in after the brutal pipe attack earlier tonight?

Ricky Starks is backstage for an interview with Renee. He says he feels bad for Action Andretti and will get Andretti's revenge for him when he faces Chris Jericho. He says Jan 4th will be a masterclass when Starks kicks Jericho's ass.

Anna Jay tries to bring a steel chair into the ring but the ref stops her. Tay gets one in from the other side, tosses it to Ruby and smashes her with a pump kick. She follows it up with the Tay-KO for the win.

Tay Conti and Anna Jay def. Ruby Soho and Willow

Conti with a DD-Tay to Ruby but Willow breaks up the count. Ruby and Conti trade strikes and chops. They follow it by trading headbutts.

Ruby Soho is back in and she's all over Tay Conti. She hits the No Future but Conti somehow kicks out. Conti then catches Willow with her trademark pump kick.

Anna Jay and Tay Conti have Willow isolated in their corner. They trade tags and have Willow isolated in their corner. Will tries to fight back to her feet. She breaks the hold but is taken down by the hair.

Anna Jay and Tay Conti vs Ruby Soho and Willow

Willow starts the match but RUby tags in soon. She's all over Anna Jay and is clearly fired up. Multiple strikes from Ruby as and Willow trade tags and dominate the match early on. Ruby still remembers the broken nose and is fired up today.

The Acclaimed drop another rap. They call out Jeff Jarrett for not being relevant since 2004. Caster calls JJ the worst Jeffrey since Jeffrey Dahmer and also namedrops Kurt Angle and references Double J marrying Angle's ex wife.

Kenny Omega hits Fenix with a One Winged Angel off the stage while PAC has the Brutalizer locked in on Matt Jackson. Omega gets the 3-count moments before Matt Jackson taps out. The Elite just manage to pick up the win.

The Elite def. Death Triangle

The Bucks hit Penta with a Meltzer Driver to the floor. PAC breaks it up at the last second. The Bucks then toss around steel chairs, taking out PAC and Penta. The follow it up with a BTE Trigger to Penta but PAC still breaks it up.

This match has been crazy. Neither team is backing down. It's been back and forth. Every time one team seems to have an advantage, the other team hits back harder.

The Young Bucks battle it out with Penta and PAC on the entrance ramp. Bucks hit a superkick before Fenix leaps off the structure and takes them out. Kenny Omega blindsides Fenix with a V-Trigger and sends him flying. PAC hits back with a German Suplex to Omega on the ramp.

This has been all action. Fenis is launched through a table as PAC gets set up on an equipment box and wheeled into a superkick. Matt goes for the cover but eats a superkick from Penta. Penta goes for a package piledriver but Nick leaps off some shelves and takes Penta out.

The Elite vs Death Triangle (Falls Count Anywhere)

The match starts in the back and its chaos from the beginning. Penta takes out Nick Jackson with a superkick as Matt Jackson smashes PAC. Penta takes down Omega with a strike from a trash can. PAC follows it up with a brainbuster to a wooden box.

Chris Jericho is backstage and he calls Ricky Starks foolish for not taking his offer to join the JAS. He says that Ricky has all the tools to be a Superstar but needs to be coached like someone like Jericho. Jericho tells Action Andretti to enjoy his win two weeks ago and to never come back to AEW.

Stokely Hathaway is out with Lee Moriarty and Big Bill. They're making their way towards HOOK who doesn't look phased. Jungle Boy is out and he wipes out Moriarty. HOOK doesn't back off from Big Bill and almost eats a chokeslam. Jungle Boy smashes Bill with a 2X4 and sends him scurrying.

HOOK vs Local competitor

HOOK takes down his opponent immediately and sends him face-first into the corner. He follows it up with strikes to the midsection followed by a nasty running lariat. HOOK hits an overhead suplex and hits the Red Rum to win the match in about 90 seconds.

HOOK wins

Darius is wobbly on his feet but is still fighting back. Moxley plants Dante with a Paradigm Shift out on the floor. Cesaro DESTROYS Darius Martin with an uppercut and the 23-year old can't kick out this time.

Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli def. Top Flight

Top Flight catch Castagnoli with a double superkick. Dante then wipes out Mox with a dive as Dante rolls up Castagnoli for a nearfall. Castagnoli hits a Neutralizer but Darius kicks out.

Castagnoli finally manages to tag in. He flings Dante Martin from corner to corner, smashing him with uppercuts as the fans explode. Dante kicks out at two and a half but he looks like he's seeing stars. The fans call for the Giant Swing and Castagnoli goes to oblige. Darius comes in now and he's the one who eats the Swing. Dante rolls Castagnoli up but it's only 2.

Darius and Dante have Moxley isolated in their corner as they trade tags and try to keep the former AEW Champion down. Dante Martin locks in a modified Cloverleaf in a battle to keep Mox grounded and away from his partner. Darius tags in and works over the knee.

Dante finally manages to tag in and he's all over Moxley. He also sends Claudio crashing of the ring and its 1 on 1 now. Moxley absorbs the kicks and hits back with a punch to the side of the face. Moxley rains down elbows and looks to set up the Death Rider but Darius takes Moxley down with a chop block.

Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli vs Top Flight

Top Flight jump the BCC boys and send them out to the floor. They leap over the top ropes but Moxley and Castagnoli stop them in their tracks. Darius starts off the match for his team and he gets dominated in the BCC corner.

Hangman Page is backstage with the Dark Order. He says that he's frustrated and has been out for two months. The doctor says that the concussion protocol is being followed and could be back in two weeks if he stays clear of the ring for now.

Wardlow is backstage for an interview. He's attacked by Samoa Joe who's holding a metal pipe. Wardlow is left in a crumpled heap after the unprovoked attack.

Danielson catches Ethan Page with the running knees and locks in the Labelle Lock again. This time Page can't get to the ropes and is forced to tap out.

Bryan Danielson def. Ethan Page

Danielson sends Page crashing out to ringside. He follows Page out but is taken down. Back in the ring, Danielson locks in the Labelle Lock but Page drags his body over to the bottom rope.

Page is in control now. He smashes Danielson with multiple forearms as MJF watches on. Danielson reverses a hold and hits German Suplex to buy himself some time. Both men are back on their feet at the same time. Danielson with a series of uppercuts and Page hits back. Danielson trips Page and he goes face-first into the turnbuckle.

Ethan Page uses his size to his advantage, taking Danielson down with a back elbow. Danielson takes back control of the match and Stokely Hathaway is enraged. He gets on the apron and Danielson knocks off his hat. Page uses the distraction to catch Bryan with a pump kick sending him crashing out to the mat.

MJF's music hits and he's sitting in the box, ready to catch the action. Page attacks Bryan while he's distracted.

Bryan Danielson vs Ethan Page

It's all Ethan Page early on but Danielson fights back with chops and kicks before dropping Page with a knee to the midsection. Bryan manipulates the ankle and locks in a Romero Special.
