FT: Argentina 1-0 Uruguay

Argentina go top of their Copa America group with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Uruguay. Guido Rodriguez' header from a Lionel Messi cross opened the scoring early in the first half, following which Argentina dominated. La Celeste had a couple of penalty appeals that were dismissed, although replays showed there was merit in their questioning.

The Albiceleste receded into their own half for much of the second period, with Uruguay dominating the ball, but unable to create clear-cut chances, barring the odd cross into the box. Lionel Scaloni would be glad to see his defence hold firm, especially against Uruguay's much-vaunted attack. Oscar Tabarez, will rightly have plenty of concerns, but Uruguay ought to qualify anyway, despite the loss in their opening encounter.

90+6' The referee blows for full time!

90+6' Luis Suarez fouls Otamendi in midfield and the ref blows for a foul.in Argentina's favour. They launch the ball upfield and Di Maria takes a shot on goal which Muslera saves.

90+4' Excellent defending from Romero once more, as he heads clear when Nandez almost finds Cavani with a superb cross from the right. The move eventually finds its way into Emi Martinez' hands.

90+2' Luis Suarez and Otamendi get into a confrontation, after the latter went down while defending an Uruguayan free-kick. Replays show Otamendi was right to go down, with Jimenez' knee finding Otamendi's .. special area.

90+1' Joaquin Correa goes into the book for a wild challenge on Matias Vecino in midfield.

90' We have five minutes of injury time, with Messi winning another free-kick down Argentina's right wing, with Vina conceding the foul this time.

90' De Paul and Messi keep it in the corner, with the former winning another free-kick with Ocampo tripping him up. He earns a yellow card for his efforts.

89' Messi takes charge and wastes a bit of time at the corner, with Ocampo conceding a free-kick while barging into Messi from behind. A contrast in experience, that.

88' Brian Ocampo wins a free-kick down Uruguay's left wing, with Molina stopping the counter attack. La Celeste play the free-kick short and work it to the opposite wing, where Acuna nicks the ball and leads a counter.

87' Close! Godin's ball forward is flicked wide cleverly by Suarez, but Nandez is unable to get to the ball first and he concedes a goal kick.

84' Messi once again finds himself on the edge of the box and holds onto the ball too long once more. Godin rushes back to nick the ball off his toes just as he's about to shoot. It does look like Messi's edging ever more closer to scoring.

83' Time's running out for Uruguay, who lose possession with a desperate pass up front. Di Maria does his best Messi impression running forward, laying the ball off to Correa on the left. He passes to Messi in the box, but the legend is crowded out, with Uruguay eventually wrestling back possession.

81' Messi goes low, and Uruguay's wall holds firm, with his shot being blocked by a prone defender.

80' WHAT A RUN! Messi collects the ball on the half way line, swiveling away from his marker. He charges through the middle and evades multiple challenges before Godin shoves him unceremoniously in the back and concedes a free-kick right on the edge of the box. No guesses for who's going to take this...

78' Messi has the ball on the edge of the box after evading a couple of challenges, but after an age where he holds on to the ball while being crowded out, he's forced to pass to Di Maria, whose shot is cleared out for a corner. Argentina waste the set-piece with Muslera punching the looped ball away with ease.

75' SHOT! Uruguay make their way forward from the right wing, with Facundo Torres sending in a tempting cross. Luis Suarez attempts an acrobatic overhead kick, but his shot flies over the bar. Emi Martinez, meanwhile, earns a yellow card for time wasting.

74' Di Maria takes the free-kick short, passing it to Messi. Uruguay get tight and do not allow a delivery into the box, with Di Maria eventually earning a throw in.

72' The Albiceleste finally wrestle possession back from Uruguay and instead of countering immediately opt to pass the ball around at the back. Rodrigo de Paul eventually makes his way forward and earns a free-kick down the right wing.

71' This is worrying for Argentina, with Uruguay having all of the ball. It's quite similar to their previous game against Chile when Argentina blew a 1-0 lead as well.

70' Facundo Torres replaces Giovanni Gonzalez for Uruguay, while Angel di Maria comes on to replace Nico Gonzalez for Argentina.

69' While Uruguay have not created a clear-cut chance so far, they are dominating the ball, with much of the play deep in Argentina's half. Vina sends in a tempting cross and it clears all of the defenders with Cavani missing a header narrowly while Luis Suarez was ahead of the ball and unable to connect.

67' Ocampo's following contribution is to mis-control a pass from Vina and concede a goal-kick. Nerves from the youngster, who looks a bit over-awed.

65' Ocampo is straight into the action, taking a corner kick for La Celeste. His delivery is deep and Acuna clears it for another corner. Ocampo's second attempt at a corner is collected by Emi Martinez... not a great start from the debutant.

64' Matias Vecino and Brain Ocampo come on to replace Lucas Torreira and Nicolas de la Cruz. Ocampo is making his debut for Uruguay.

62' Lucas Torreira goes into the book for a late challenge on Exequiel Palacios.

61' Rodrigo de Paul sends in a tempting cross from the corner, but Muslera is dominant in the air and claims the ball. Uruguay immediately set off on the corner, but the move peters out once more.

60' Messi takes the corner this time, with Gimenez heading the ball clear for another corner, this time from Argentina's left wing.

58' Argentina have retreated a fair bit into their own half, but Rodrigo de Paul has enough and passes the ball forward to Messi. The Barca legend drives through midfield and clips a ball forward to Correa, only for Godin to intercept and clear the ball. Uruguay eventually concede a corner, with De Paul's delivery headed out for another corner.

56' A spurt of niggly fouls of late, with Nandez the latest to do so, clattering into Marcos Acuna. The Argentinian defender is none too pleased and demands a yellow card from the referee.

55' Luis Suarez is down after going up for an aerial challenge with Nicolas Otamendi. Unsurprisingly, he's back up a few moments later.

52' Exequiel Palacios and Joaquin Correa come on for Argentina, replacing Lautaro Martinez and Giovanni Lo Celso.

50' Positive play from Uruguay as Valverde finds Cavani on the edge of the box. The Manchester United striker finds Suarez next to him with a clever pass, only for Suarez to lose out with an exaggerated dive.

48' Giovanni Lo Celso is the first player to be booked with a late challenge on Lucas Torreira.

47' Uruguay have started the second half well, passing the ball at a much higher tempo, but the Argentinian defence stands firm, with Acuna denying Gonzalez from sending in a cross.

HT: Argentina 1-0 Uruguay

Argentina have the advantage going into the break in the Clasico del Rio de la Plata, with Guido Rodriguez scoring from a corner, courtesy Lionel Messi. The Albiceleste have easily been the better side so far, going close on a number of occasions, in stark contrast to Uruguay's toothless performance up front.

The closest La Celeste have come to scoring was when Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez had a couple of questionable penalty appeals ruled out, with the latter remonstrating with Brazilian referee, Wilton Sampaio at the end of the half.

We can expect a well-contested second half too, stay tuned!

45+2' De Paul takes the corner short, finding Messi, but the delivery into the box is cleared with ease. Uruguay set off on the counter, but lose momentum as De La Cruz holds the ball up.

45+1' De Paul earns a corner while attempting to find Lautaro in the box. De Paul steps up to take the set-piece.

45' We have three minutes of injury time. Can Uruguay grab one back?

45' Excellent defending from Romero as he heads a searching long ball from Suarez back to his keeper with calm, all while being harangued by Cavani. The Atalanta defender has been supreme tonight.

43' SHOT! De La Cruz's delivery to the far post is cleared by Otamendi, but the ball lands to Bentancur who hammers a left-footed strike well wide of the post.

42' Edinson Cavani wins a free kick down Uruguay's left-wing, with Romero clattering into him from behind. A promising position for La Celeste this, with Nico De La Cruz stepping up to take the set-piece.

40' Gonzalez is back on the pitch and is immediately back into the action helping out in defence down Argentina's left wing. It's no wonder Scaloni trusts the youngster so much.
