Ponnappa/Crasto fail to impress, as they suffer another defeat (11-21, 12-21)

Well, there's that. Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto were simply no match for the Japanese duo Matsuyama and Shida. The Japanese team quickly built a six-point lead in the first set without any response from the Indians, and from there, it was one-sided. Their quick court coverage, coordination, and effective combination of power and placement proved too much for the disheartened Indian pair.

Crasto and Ponnappa fought back in the second set, particularly in the middle of the game, managing to force some errors from their opponents. However, the Japanese duo regained control in the final moments and secured a comfortable victory. With their second comprehensive defeat, the Indian women’s doubles team is likely out of the Olympics.

It has been a challenging campaign for them, facing higher-ranked opponents. Their next match against the lower-ranked Australian pair of Angela Yu and Setyana Mapasa offers an opportunity to end their campaign on a positive note.

12:50 (IST)29 JUL 2024

The players are warming up, and the game will begin shortly!

12:45 (IST)29 JUL 2024

This is not the first time these two pairs have faced each other. Ponnappa and Crasto were defeated by the Japanese duo just a few months back. While this experience will give the Indians some insight into their opponents’ strengths and weaknesses, it also highlights the difficult task ahead. Here’s a recap on how that game unfolded ⬇️

12:43 (IST)29 JUL 2024

Below, you’ll find a preview of the game and details on where to watch this important clash.

12:41 (IST)29 JUL 2024

The Japanese duo of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida has long been a force to be reckoned with in women’s doubles. Here’s everything you need to know about them ⬇️

12:35 (IST)29 JUL 2024

Ponnappa and Crasto, meanwhile, will certainly need to show improvement in several areas following that defeat. The pair struggled with coordination during the first match and made numerous unforced errors that shifted the momentum away from them.

Although they had their moments, the South Koreans capitalized on their struggles, using a perfect combination of precision and aggression to secure the win. With an even tougher task ahead, the Indians will need to rise to the occasion. However, on the grand stage, anything is possible, and they will hope to pull off an upset.

12:35 (IST)29 JUL 2024

The Japanese pair is undoubtedly one of the best in the world, and their achievements speak volumes. Together, they have won 11 BWF World Tour titles and finished as runners-up 13 times. They were ranked 2nd in 2022 and are now just two places below.

More recently, they finished as runners-up in the Singapore Open, while also convincingly winning their opening game in Paris against the Australian pair Angela Lu and Setyana Mapasa (21-18, 21-14).

12:34 (IST)29 JUL 2024

Ponnappa and Crasto suffered a setback in their opening match, losing in straight sets to the South Korean pair Kim/Kong (18-21, 10-21). Consequently, this is a do-or-die situation for the Indians, as only the top two teams from each group advance to the quarter-finals. Despite putting up a strong fight in the first set against the 8th-ranked Koreans, they were comfortably beaten in the second, which showed the gap in quality. However, there’s no time to dwell on the defeat, and they will surely be eager to give it their all in this crucial fixture.
