Ponnappa/Crasto fall short once again (15-21, 10-21)

Three games, three defeats without winning a set is certainly a disappointing result for Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto. They entered this game as favorites against the Australian pair Setyana Mapasa and Yu Angela and were expected to show a fight. After a close start, the Aussies took control after the mid-game interval and won by a six-point margin in the first set.

India had a chance in the second game, starting well, but after the Aussies reached the ten point mark, they faltered, making several errors yet again. Despite the Indians’ poor performance, the Aussies, especially Angela Yu, played exceptionally well with some outstanding shots. The Indian women’s doubles pair, however, will undoubtedly be disappointed with their performance throughout all three matches.

Here’s a more detailed look into the Australian pair and their achievements ⬇️

18:10 (IST)30 JUL 2024

Similar to the Indian duo, the Australian pair also suffered a straight-sets defeat against higher-ranked seeds. Angela Yu, the younger member of the team, is making her Olympic debut, whereas 28-year-old Setyana Mapasa is competing for the second time, having previously participated in Tokyo. The pair, who won the Oceania Championship in February, will arrive with the ambition of leaving an impression on the world stage.

18:10 (IST)30 JUL 2024

Ponnappa and Crasto have struggled at times, and despite the high caliber of their opponents, they were also guilty of squandering many points at crucial junctures. Both the South Korean and Japanese pairs were more composed and never appeared to be at risk of suffering a defeat. However, the Indian duo are now favorites to secure their first victory against the young Australian pair, who are ranked seven places below them at 26th.

18:08 (IST)30 JUL 2024

Ponnappa and Crasto kicked off their campaign against the 8th-ranked South Korean team, Kim/Kong. Despite putting up a strong fight in the first set, they eventually lost in straight sets while making several errors along the way (18-21, 10-21). The second match was certainly even more challenging. Facing the fourth-seeded Japanese pair Matsuyama/Shida, they lost in straight sets once again. The Indians simply struggled to keep up as the Japanese raced to an 11-21, 12-21 win.
