3000m Steeplechase Final

Avinash Sable ran a historic 3000m steeplechase heat for India, finishing in fifth to become the first Indian to qualify for the final.

The Indian led for most of the race and looked comfortable heading into the home stretch. His calculated move saw him finish 5th without exerting himself too much. His timing of 8.15.43 was a good six seconds short of his personal best 8:09.94, which is also the national record. He had clocked the time in Paris this year itself and will be deriving confidence from the fact.

The 3000m steeplechase final is scheduled to take pace at 1.10 am IST so settle in as we bring to you updates as and when they unfold!

23:57 (IST)7 AUG 2024

While the Indian triple jumpers have failed to make it to the final, Avinash Sable will be competing in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase Finals later at 1:13 AM. Make sure you join us for that as we take your leave for now!

Men's Triple Jump Qualifications - Praveen Chithravel & Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida

Unfortunately, both the Indian triple-jumpers will have to end their campaigns in the Qualifications round as they fail to qualify for the finals. Praveen Chithravel records a best of 16.25 m which he managed in his second jump while Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida kept on improving with every jump but his best of 16.49 m was not enough to take him through. While Abdullah finishes at the 21st spot, Pravin ends up on number 27 and with only 12 athletes going through to the finals, they will not go through.

22:51 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's Triple Jump Qualifications - Praveen Chithravel & Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida

The qualifications are underway. Let me tell you guys, the triple jump is one of the most fascinating events to watch. There are three phases that the athletes go through - the hop off the board, into the step which is the second phase and then the third and final phase which is the jump before landing on to the sand.

22:43 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's Triple Jump Qualifications - Praveen Chithravel & Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida

Rule check - Each participant will get a maximum of 3 attempts with their best attempt being considered. The athletes will try and get past the Olympic Qualification (Q) mark at 17.10 m or try to be in the top-12 across both the groups to advance to the finals of the Olympics.

Praveen Chithravel is placed in Group A along with 15 other members while Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida finds himself in Group B which consists of 16 members as well. While the athletes of Group A will have their attempts, Group B will do so simultaneously.

22:37 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Avinash Sable is set to compete in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase Final. Sable has already gone where no other Indian has and he will be looking to put his best foot forward in what could be a historic race.

But that is for later, up next we will have our triple jumpers Praveen Chithravel & Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida in action in the Qualifications which will start in less than 10 minutes.

22:34 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Hello, folks! Welcome back to the coverage of the Indian athletes in action today at the track and field. After a disappointing morning session, it is now time to move forward and look at what lies ahead of us.

14:46 (IST)7 AUG 2024

We still have a lot of action coming up later with Praveen Chithravel & Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida set to take part in Men's Triple Jump Qualifications starting at 10:45 PM IST. 14:43 (IST)7 AUG 2024

A disappointing set of results for the Indian athletes with Sarvesh Anil Kushare, Annu Rani & Jyothi Yarraji failing to advance to the next stages of their respective events. While Jyothi has moved to the repechage where she will have another crack, Annu and Kushare's journey at Paris 2024 has ended.

14:39 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Women's Javelin Throw Qualification - Annu Rani

Another disappointing throw from Annu measuring 53.55 and she finishes on the 15th position in the Group A. That, unfortunately, would not be enough for the Indian to advance any further and her campaign has come to an end.

14:30 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's High Jump Qualification - Sarvesh Anil Kushare

Kushare fails for the third time at the height of 2.20m and that will be that for the Indian high-jumper. Not the greatest of outings for someone who has a PB of 2.27m and was expected to do better.

14:27 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Women's Javelin Throw Qualification - Annu Rani

A poor second throw of 53.22m from Annu Rani after her 55.81 in her first round and she has slipped down to the 13th spot in her group with just one throw to go.

14:23 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Marathon Race Walk Relay Mixed - Suraj Panwar & Priyanka Goswami

Meanwhile, Suraj Panwar and Priyanka Goswami could not finish the Marathon Race Walk Relay Mixed as they pulled out of the race towards the end and bow out of the competition with a DNF against their name.

14:17 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's High Jump Qualification - Sarvesh Anil Kushare

Another failed attempt at 2.20m for Kushare. He now only has one attempt remaining and will need to clear the bar in the next one to move further.

14:15 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Women's Javelin Throw Qualification - Annu Rani

Annu Rani throws a 55.81m in her first attempt. She is currently ranked 10th after the first round of throws and the Indian will need to improve in her next two throws. Remember, each athlete gets 3 throws in the qualification round.

14:14 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Women's 100m Hurdles - Jyothi Yarraji

Jyothi finishes in the seventh position in her heat with a timing of 13.16. The Indian was slow to start off and could not recover moving forward. She fails to qualify for the semis and will now move to the repechage round

14:09 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Women's 100m Hurdles - Jyothi Yarraji

It is time for Heat 4 of Women's 100m Hurdles which will see India's Jyothi Yarraji staking a claim for the semis. Can she do it? The racers are lined up on their marks as I type this with Jyothi in Lane 2.

14:05 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's High Jump Qualifications - Sarvesh Anil Kushare

Kushare does not manage to get over the 2.20m mark in his next jump as he clips the bar. Remember, he will have two more attempts at doing so if he chooses to.

13:45 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's High Jump Qualifications - Sarvesh Anil Kushare

A successful first jump for Kushare at 2.15m as he soars over the bar comfortably. A good start for the Indian

13:28 (IST)7 AUG 2024

In just a bit, we will have Sarvesh Anil Kusare, Jyothi Yarraji and Annu Rani in action while the triple-jumpers and Avinash Sable will have their events later in the night. You can always scroll down for the schudule and further details.

13:26 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's 3000m Steeplechase Finals - Avinash Sable

Avinash Sable, having already scripted history by becoming the first Indian athlete to qualify for the Men's 3000m Steeplechase Finals will be hoping to put in his best efforts in the biggest race of his life. If he can manage to better his PB of 8:09:91, he can spring in a surprise and script further history. He has come into the finals with the fifth-best timing in the heats, so there is certainly hope.

13:25 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's Triple Jump Qualifications - Praveen Chithravel & Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida

India will have two men carrying their hopes in Men's Triple Jump Qualifications in Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida. While Praveen is in Group A, Aboobacker is placed in Group B with each Group having 16 members each. The Qualification Standard (Q) is set at 17.10m with 12 places up for grabs in the final, automatic qualifiers crossing the Q-mark or the top-12 performers. Praveen has jumped as far as 17.12m in this season while he has a PB of 17.37m, he is expected to do well in the Qualifications. Aboobacker too, has a PB of 17.19 which is more than what is needed in the Qualifications, he has touched the 17m-mark this season as is expected to be in contention for the finals.

13:24 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Women's Javelin Throw Qualifications - Annu Rani

Annu Rani, India's lone female javelin thrower at Paris, finds herself in Group A alongside 15 others. A total of 32 javelin throwers comprise two groups out of which only 12 will advance to the final. The Qualification Standard (Q) is 62m and the ones who meeting the standard or the 12 best performers from the qualifiers will move forward. Annu Rani will have to outdo her season's best throw of 60.68m in order to meet the Q. She has a PB of 63.82m and is certainly capable of doing that.

13:23 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Women's 100m Hurdles Round 1 - Jyothi Yarraji

Jyothi Yarraji is in the Heat 4 of Women's 100m Hurdles where she will be alongside 8 other runners trying to make it to the next round which are the semi-finals. To advance to the semi-finals, Jyothi will need to finish in the top-3 in her heat or be one of the 3 fastest runners who have not qualified from all the 5 heats combined. If Jyothi fails to do so, she will move to the repechage round. All the runners that will be competing in the same heat as Jyothi have a PB which is better than the Indian, so she might find it very tough to get through.

13:22 (IST)7 AUG 2024

Men's High Jump Qualifications - Sarvesh Anil Kushare

Starting us off will be Sarvesh Anil Kushare with the Men's High Jump Qualifications. Kushare is placed in Group B which has 16 athletes including the India. Another 15 athletes are there in Group A taking the total number of competing athletes to 31. Out of these 31 athletes, only 12 will be able to make their places in the final. To go through to the final, the athletes need to meet the Qualification Standard (Q) or be the top-12 performers in the Qualifications. The Qualification Standard is set at 2.29 m which is just above Kushare's personal best at 2.27. The Indian has jumped a highest of 2.25 m in this season and will need to better his best to make the finals.
