Australian Open: Day 6

Top-ranked doubles pair Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis have taken yet another straight sets victory, just as convincing as their last, to progress to round 3 of the Australian Open.

Winner Makarova has had better success - she finished in the semi-finals of the Australian Open last year, losing to compatriot Maria Sharapova.

Pliskova is yet to move beyond the third round of a Grand Slam, and that trend continued this year.

Another top-10 women's player to crumble was 9th seed Karolina Pliskova, who lost out to Ekaterina Makarova 3-6, 2-6.

Strycova's highest Grand Slam finish came at Wimbledon in 2014; this is the highest stage she has reached at the Australian Open.

Strycova beat Muguruza 6-3, 6-2 in a match that lasted an hour and 10 minutes and saw Muguruza commit a mammoth 32 unforced errors in the two sets she played.

Elsewhere, upsets continued in the women's singles, with third seed Garbine Muguruza crashing out tamely to Czech Barbora Strycova.

Former World No. 1 Azarenka retained her top ranking as a result of that win.

The following year, as reigning champion in Melbourne, she beat Li Na for her second Grand Slam title.

Azarenka first won the Australian Open in 2012, beating Maria Sharapova to the title.

The Belarusian ace now proceeds to Round 4 of the Open, a title she has won two times in the past.

Among the women, a powerful Victoria Azarenka beat her Japanese rival Naomi Osaka, dominating her in a 6-1, 6-1 win.

His victory over the Czech Davis Cupper has helped him chalk up the 400th tour-level win of his career.

Wawrinka beat Rosol 6-2, 6-3, 7-6.
