Matches between these two teams are seldom passive and that was the case tonight as well. Kerala began the game on the front foot, forcing Debjit Majumder into a save barely 120 seconds into the contest. While Chennaiyin clawed themselves back into the match on the back of a raucous home support and some composure on the ball, it was the Tuskers who took the lead.

A brilliant pace from Ivan Kaliuzhnyi opened up the home defense way too easily and found its way to Sahal Abdul Samad, who chipped Debjit to put his side ahead. The Blasters showed good game management to see out the half and took a lead into half-time.

Thomas Brdaric made his first change at half-time, bringing on Rahim Ali for the largely peripheral Prasanth Karuthadathkuni. It worked wonders as Ali's venomous half-volley just three minutes after the break forced a superb save from Prabhsukhan Gill, with Vincy Barretto pouncing on the rebound to score against his former side.

Chennaiyin grew into the match from then on, but neither team could create any clear-cut chances in the final 15 minutes. On the balance of things, a draw seemed a fair result and both teams deservedly took a point apiece. While it did nothing to the ISL 2022-23 standings, the Marina Machans maintained their unbeaten home record against the Kerala Blasters (three wins and four draws). Meanwhile, the draw snapped the Blasters' five-match winning streak, but extended their unbeaten run to six matches.

Next up, Chennaiyin will take on ISL leaders Mumbai City FC in an away fixture on December 24, while the Tuskers will host Odisha FC a couple of days later.

As we get within half an hour of kick-off, let's take a quick look at how these two teams fared against each other last season.

ISL 2021-22 finalists Kerala Blasters had a massive advantage over the struggling Chennaiyin, winning both their meetings by 3-0 margins. The first game in December 2021 saw Sahal Abdul Samad, Jorge Pereyra Diaz and Adrian Luna get on the scoresheet. Both Sahal and Luna are starting this match as well.

The reverse fixture in February this year saw Pereyra Diaz register a first-half brace while Luna added a third in the second half.

It's also worth noting that Prasanth Karuthadathkuni and Vincy Barretto, who joined Chennaiyin this summer and are starting tonight, came off the bench for the Blasters in the first match. Barretto went on to start the second game, but was replaced at half-time, while Prasanth was left on the bench for the entire contest.
