Euro 2016: Germany brush aside Slovakia 3-0 and progress into the quarter-finals

Boateng and Gomez's first half goals were not dimmed by Ozil's penalty miss, while Draxler provided the icing on the cake with a wonderful volley. 63' That is game over. Toni Kroos sends in a corner from the right, and Mats Hummels gets his head to the ball, as it falls to Draxler on the far post at an awkward height. Not a problem, he hammers home an acrobatic volley into the top corner. Germany 3-0 Slovakia.

60' WHAT SKILL! Draxler does a 360 degree pirouette on the wings as he is sandwiched by two Slovak players but still manages to evade their attentions. Somewhere, a GIF-maker wipes away a tear.

58' These are encouraging signs from Slovakia who have made a much better fist of the game in the second half. Germany, however, have progressively sat deeper as they look glad to soak up the Slovak pressure.

57' Skriniar takes a tumble after being clipped by Draxler. Naive from the youngster, as Slovakia have a free-kick in Hamsik's range. However, the Slovak captain tries a dummy and pass to Kucka, who slams the indirect free-kick well over Neuer's goal.

48' Kucka and Muller, off all people, contest a ball as Slovakia pump it long into Germany's box. The Germans clear, in the calm and efficient manner that comes so naturally to them.

HT: Germany 2-0 Slovakia. What a half of football! Boateng gave Germany an early lead, which could have been worse for Slovakia if not for Ozil's penalty miss, but Gomez underlined Germany's dominance with a fine finish at the end.

41' WHAT A SAVE! Pekarik sends in a peach of a cross from the right wing for Slovakia and Kucka hangs at the far post and powers a header into the top corner, only for Neuer to stretch out his arms and make a fingertip save.

20' Germany's fullbacks are playing like wingers with Hector and Kimmich playing like midfielders. The latter sends a cross into the box that narrowly evades Gomez's head. It's clear what Joachim Loew's strategy is here : get the ball(s) wide!
