Feyenoord 1-0 Manchester United (Vilhena 79')

Feyenoord get their first win against Manchester United to extend the perfect streak they've enjoyed so far this season. It was a rather dull and drab game for most parts. Vilhena's goal ten minutes from time brought some life back into the game, and his strike proved to be enough to win the three points. Jose Mourinho will be sorely disappointed with the result and the performances of most of his men. He has made a bit of unwanted history with this loss, as it's the first time United have ever lost the opening match in Europe in two consecutive seasons.

00:24 (IST)16 SEP 2016

90+3' And that's it. Game over. The ref blows his whistle to bring a close to the game. Feyenoord walk away with the three points.

00:22 (IST)16 SEP 2016

90+3' More scrappy play in the Feyenoord box. High tension stuff here in the dying seconds.

00:20 (IST)16 SEP 2016

90+1' Karsdorp makes way for Nieuwkoop in what is Feyenoord's final substitution.

00:19 (IST)16 SEP 2016

90' The ref has added three minutes of extra time.

00:18 (IST)16 SEP 2016

89' United have a free-kick on the left wing. Memphis tries to whip the ball into the box, but mishits it terribly. Somebody in the stands can take that ball home with them. That was a pathetic attempt.

00:16 (IST)16 SEP 2016

86' Both United as well as Feyenoord players will have their hearts in their mouths. Feyenoord were in danger of conceding, as there was a spell of scrappy play within their own box. Luckliy they managed to get it clear.

00:13 (IST)16 SEP 2016

85' United have failed to keep a clean sheet in Europe for the last 6 games. The last time they didn't concede was against PSV Eindhoven in November of last year.

00:12 (IST)16 SEP 2016

83' United are desperate. They are throwing numbers forward in the hopes of finding an equaliser. There isn't too much time left. If the Englishmen are going to get anything out of this game, it has to happen soon.

00:09 (IST)16 SEP 2016

79' Goal! Feyenoord take the lead! Jorgensen had the ball on the right flank, and was in plenty of space. He played a ground ball into the box, where Vilhena arrived just in time to slot it home past De Gea.

00:04 (IST)16 SEP 2016

74' Basacikoglu beat Rojo rather easily, making space for himself to line up a shot. He struck the ball from distance towards the bottom right, but De Gea was able to get down to it without too much trouble.

23:59 (IST)15 SEP 2016

71' Paul Pogba has been very average so far, if not slightly below. He still hasn't had a good game for United. Will he ever live up to that price tag hanging over his head, or will he crumble under its weight?

23:57 (IST)15 SEP 2016

68' Change for Feyenoord. Berghuis comes off the field to make way for Basacikoglu.

23:56 (IST)15 SEP 2016

67' Mourinho clearly intends to overpower the Feyenoord defence with his forward line. Choosing to make all three attacking substitutions gives us a peek into what's going through his mind. Now it only remains to be seen whether his players can execute the plan.

23:53 (IST)15 SEP 2016

64' Manchester United have made all three substitutions at once. That doesn't happen too often. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Memphis Depay and Ashley Young have replaced Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Juan Mata.

23:51 (IST)15 SEP 2016

62' Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to enter the fray for United. This will be the first time in 15 years he's playing a European game outside the Champions League.

23:46 (IST)15 SEP 2016

56' There really isn't too much happening in the game right now. Neither team has threatened enough to really cause any worry. If it stays like this the game will surely end in a stalemate.

23:41 (IST)15 SEP 2016

52' Mourinho clearly feels the need for a change, and it would seem one is imminent. Depay and Ibrahimovic can be seen warming up on the sidelines.

23:38 (IST)15 SEP 2016

49' The first five minutes of the second half have been tightly contested. But yet again, all the action is happening in midfield. Not much penetration from either side, other than the occasional chance.

23:34 (IST)15 SEP 2016

45' We're back for the second half. United get the second half underway as the ref blows his whistle to start the action.

23:23 (IST)15 SEP 2016

45+1' The ref blows his whistle to bring an end to the first half. The teams go into the break on even terms. Manchester United had the upper hand for a while, but their grip on the game faded as the half wore on. Jose Mourinho will expect better of his side in the second half. He won't settle for anything less than a win. Whether he changes anything at the break or waits a little longer before making changes remains to be seen. Giovanni Van Bronckhorst will be quite satisfied with the display his team have put on. They never looked to be in too much trouble during the opening 45 minutes. Infact they were pushing United against the wall for some parts. He'll expect more of the same from them, if not better.

23:17 (IST)15 SEP 2016

45' The fourth official has indicated that there will be one added minute of time to be played.

23:15 (IST)15 SEP 2016

44' The home team are still dominating possession right now. United have nine men defending just outside their own penalty area.

23:13 (IST)15 SEP 2016

41' Feyenoord have put together a decent spell of possession over the last few minutes. United look like they need the half-time break more than the Dutchmen.

23:10 (IST)15 SEP 2016

38' The game has somewhat come to life now. Both sides are playing with more energy, fire and intent as they take turns attacking and counter-attacking.

23:05 (IST)15 SEP 2016

33' Rashford has been on the receiving end of more than a few jarring tackles in the last few minutes.

23:02 (IST)15 SEP 2016

30' The home crowd are making a brilliant atmosphere for their team with their loud and passionate cheers to push them on and intimidate the visitors.

22:57 (IST)15 SEP 2016

25' Great chance for Martial. Rashford managed to find him just outside the box from the right flank. The Frenchman took a touch to set up his shot, but the strike went just wide of the post. He probably should've done better there. Wasted opportunity.

22:55 (IST)15 SEP 2016

24' Van der Heijden picks up a booking for leaving a foot lingering to trip Juan Mata.

22:54 (IST)15 SEP 2016

22' The game is rather slow. Far from lightning paced end to end football. These two teams are taking a more measured and calm approach to the game.

22:49 (IST)15 SEP 2016

18' Pogba decided to take a direct shot on goal from the set-piece. The Frenchman's shot was on target, but wasn't struck with enough venom to beat Brad Jones.

22:48 (IST)15 SEP 2016

17' Free-kick to United in a dangerous position outside the box.

22:47 (IST)15 SEP 2016

16' Bailly is back on the pitch. He's limping and clearly in some discomfort, but it looks like he's going to try and run it off.

22:46 (IST)15 SEP 2016

14' Eric Bailly seems to have hurt himself. He's writhing on the floor in pain, and he's now stepping out onto the sidelines to receive treatment. Play carries on.

22:43 (IST)15 SEP 2016

11' Berghuis decides to take a pop at goal from distance. He tried to curl it into the top corner, but the strike wasn't accurate enough. De Gea was able to save it without too much fuss.

22:42 (IST)15 SEP 2016

9' Chance for Feyenoord, as Toornstra picks up the ball on the left flank. He tried to play the ball into the box, but Darmian managed to get there in time to block the pass.

22:39 (IST)15 SEP 2016

7' Neither team have been able to really threaten the opposition yet. Most of the play is happening in midfield, well away from either goal.

22:35 (IST)15 SEP 2016

3' Feyenoord are keeping the ball at the moment and United are looking to win it back.

22:32 (IST)15 SEP 2016

1' Feyenoord kick things off and the home side are in red-white kits while United are in blue.

22:32 (IST)15 SEP 2016

KICKOFF!

22:28 (IST)15 SEP 2016

Here we go! The teams walk out to a raucous reception in Rotterdam.

22:27 (IST)15 SEP 2016

A familiar foe plays in midfield for Feyenoord. Former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt is in the starting lineup and he has scored a hat-trick against the Red Devils before.

"I have great memories of playing against United. We won a couple of games, I scored a hat-trick at Anfield, but I also remember a couple of games at Old Trafford, playing with Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard."

22:23 (IST)15 SEP 2016

Mourinho has made a number of changes to the XI that lost 2-1 in the Manchester Derby. The likes of Schneiderlin, Smalling and Rashford get a start while Rooney and Ibrahimovic have been rested. Still no place in the XI for Memphis Depay who starts on the bench.

21:23 (IST)15 SEP 2016

Both teams have announced the confirmed line-ups for the game.

Feyenoord: Jones; Karsdorp, Botteghin, Van der Heijden, Kongolo; El Ahmadi, Kuyt, Vilhena; Berghuis, Jorgensen, Toornstra

Manchester United: De Gea; Darmian, Bailly, Smalling, Rojo; Schneiderlin, Herrera; Pogba, Mata, Martial; Rashford

Feyenoord vs Manchester United Match Preview

Feyenoord host Manchester United at the De Kuip stadium in the first match of both teams’ UEFA Europa League campaign. The stadium won’t be at full capacity, as there has been crowd trouble in previous European home fixtures. The stadium will house only 30,000 fans. There will be additional stewards on site and a 10m high net will surround the pitch in an effort to avoid triggering suspended punishments handed down by UEFA. The Dutchmen go into the game in a sensational run of form. They are five games into their Eredivisie season, winning all of them and topping the table, two points ahead of second placed PSV Eindhoven. Coached by Giovanni Van Bronckhorst, Feyenoord have scored fifteen goals in the five games, conceding only three. Clearly the Dutchmen are on a roll and they ought to pose a good challenge to their opponents today.

Manchester United come into the game on the back of the first loss of their season. Jose Mourinho lost out to rival Pep Guardiola in the Manchester Derby in a match that ended 2-1 to the Citizens. They currently stand fourth in the English Premier League table with 9 points, behind Manchester City, Chelsea and Everton. Speaking about playing in the Europa League, Jose Mourinho said: "It's not the big dream of every big player, but we are not in the Champions League.” "We have to look at it with respect. I think we want to do well in the competition and for a club of our dimension to do well is not to be out in the group phase." The Portuguese will be looking to his team for a reaction to the loss in their last game.

Feyenoord vs Manchester United Team News

Former Liverpool man Dirk Kuyt plies his trade at the Dutch club. The 36-year-old has now been converted to a central midfielder, playing a deeper role than that of the wide man he used to be. Another former Liverpool player Brad Jones is also at the club, and will most likely be the man between the sticks for them tonight. Van Bronckhorst will be without Eljero Elia, Kenneth Vermeer, Miquel Nelom and Sven van Beek for the game.

Jose Mourinho has made multiple changes to his side for this game. Wayne Rooney has not been named in the squad and hasn’t travelled to the Netherlands. Luke Shaw is unavailable due to a hamstring injury while Phil Jones has a knee ligament issue. Henrikh Mkhitaryan also picked up an injury of his own. Jesse Lingard and Antonio Valencia have also been excluded from the squad for the game.
