Prannoy's second group-stage fixture will be against Vietnam's Le Duc Phat on Wednesday night Indian time, and he'll want to pick up from where he left off here in that Group K encounter to seal his entry into the Round of 16.
He took a while to get going, but there was no stopping HS Prannoy once he did! He was on top of his game in Game 2, working like a well-oiled machine, tempering aggression with a solid defense, giving his spirited, but ultimately outmatched opponent Fabian Roth, little chance.
That wasn't the case throughout the match, however, as Prannoy's intent, especially close to the net, was found lacking in the first game, and smart play from Roth saw the German take a 16-13 lead at one point. However, Prannoy's power and great movement enabled him to come back brilliantly and take a cagey and error-filled first game.
However, towards the end, with his complete range of shots on show, he seemed like a force to reckon with and wrapped up proceedings in style.
Prannoy shows his class in a long rally, exhibiting excellent shot selection, with Roth's desperate cross-court angled a bit too wide, bringing this match to an end.

A powerful cross-court smash from Prannoy sets up Match Point!
Prannoy has snuffed out any possibility of a comeback from Roth in this 2nd game, and a powerful forehand winner down the line sees him take a 6-point lead. He's not far away from match point here.
Ohh, what a return that was! Roth smashes that hard and flat towards Prannoy's hip, but the anticipation from the Indian and his reflexes to send it past the net was too good.
A loose backhand return from Prannoy allows his opponent to pull one back, but he regains his 5-point lead with a solid backhand smash. He certainly has a spring in his step now, forcing Roth into making errors, and the gulf in the class between the two players is showing in this 2nd game.
However, Roth has shown tremendous grit and composure today, and a string of errors from Prannoy sees his lead reduced to three.
Once again, Prannoy's control in these longer rallies is too good for Roth, and he manufactures that backhand winner beautifully, taking a 3-point lead in the process. He then rushes the net and shows great anticipation to smash that forehand past Roth.
His confidence is clearly showing and he goes on the front foot once more to take a 5-point lead going into the break.
Ohh, Prannoy pulls out the backhand smash, but it's ruled to have gone out! He challenges the decision, but it turns out to be well wide. Prannoy burns a challenge there.
Oh, great defense from Prannoy as he pulls out a brilliant return from a scorching smash to take a 3-point lead. Roth, as he has done all match, doesn't allow him to pull clear, hitting right back.
Prannoy, however, seems more at ease in this 2nd game, and he's showing his full range of shots here, this time winning the point with a deft winner at the net. A misjudgement from Roth near the end-line sees Prannoy take a 4-point lead.
Prannoy starts on the front foot, bringing out a strong cross-court smash, but Roth opens his account with a deft forehand winner to Prannoy's back-hand. A net error from Roth sees Prannoy lead 3-2.
Prannoy rushes the net to brilliant effect, forcing a weak return and pouncing on it with aplomb to force a Game Point. Roth then hits the net in a flat exchange, and the first game goes to Prannoy as a result!
That was a hard-fought game for Prannoy, with Roth showcasing his range and versatility to lead 16-13 at one point, and it was only towards the end of the game that both players seemed to hit full stride. Can Prannoy win in straight games or will Roth hit back?
Prannoy seems to have his game plan in place, and the longer the rallies go, the more he seems in control. He scores two crucial points on the trot, forcing weak returns from Roth on both occasions before firing the smash past him.
However, Roth exhibits deft touch and deception with a well-disguised shot to pull one back. 19-18 Prannoy now.
Oh, a wonderful rally that ends with Prannoy leveling the scores! Both players covered the full extent of the court in that one, but Roth's attempted smash to finish it off was a bit too wide.
Roth, however, has been really dominant at the net, and his fierce backhand gets the better of Prannoy. Prannoy gives a fitting reply to that, showing some intent near the net for the first time in the match, benefitting from it.
This has been a really tight and engrossing contest thus far!
Prannoy hits back with a couple of points in a row, but once again, those net errors keep cropping up, denying him a chance to build any consistent momentum. Roth pulls away 16-13 after going long, with Prannoy's judgment letting him down on that occasion.
Oh, great point from Roth! Prannoy's weak return near the net was pounced on by the German to level the scores. Roth follows that up with great net awareness, this time with his backhand, to take the lead for the first time in the match.
He adds a couple more points to his lead with some patient returns, and Prannoy needs to come up with an answer.
That smash down the line hasn't been working for Prannoy so far as he's gone wide on all his attempts so far. Fabian Roth exhibits his wide range of shots, forcing Prannoy into a net error as the shuttles draw level once more.
This has been a cagey game so far, but Prannoy ensures he gains the edge going into the break with a powerful smash towards Roth's backhand to take a 11-10 lead.
Both players are still settling into their rhythms, and a string of unforced errors from both players ensue. Prannoy seems to be getting into his groove, however, as he takes a 3-point lead, with a flat forehand cross-court that's a bit too fast for his opponent.
Prannoy has been found lacking at the net in these early exchanges, and he makes another net error allowing Roth to level the scores. However, he follows it up with an excellent point, capping off a long rally with a fiery cross-court smash.
A net error from Prannoy allows Roth to take his first point of the match. The German levels the scores after Prannoy sends his cross-court smash a bit too wide. The shuttles trade points once more before Prannoy pulls away with a 2-point lead after coming out on top of a flat exchange.
Roth goes long and too long at that, giving Prannoy the first point of the match. Again, He exhibits great judgment as Roth's long backhand is just past the end-line.

HS Prannoy is India's highest-ranked male shuttler (Rank 13) and arguably India's best shot at winning a medal in Men's Singles Badminton at this Olympics.
