Words from the highest run-getter in the day

Usman Khawaja: I am not sure to be honest (about doing anything different). I executed my plans, tried to score when I saw a scoring opportunity and respected the good ball. It is not rocket science, it was good to get a partnership with Marnus, felt like the start was the toughest time to bat with the new ball being inconsistent but it was nice to get the partnership. It is not an easy wicket out there. It is hard to say (if there was a change in pitch), it was spinning in the morning and spinning in the afternoon, it is a spin friendly wicket. We will know more tomorrow but I don't expect it to get any better. I sweep on length most times, line sometimes when the offspinner goes down leg and I used the sweep more intermittently. I did the same thing last week too and it is good to have in your arsenal. The plan hasn't changed but it has been dictated by the pitch and how the bowlers are bowling at you.

India vs Australia 3rd Test Day 1 Summary

A day dominated by Australia which has been seldom to watch in this Test series. But Australia turned well under the captaincy of Steve Smith. Just five overs after Indian openers scored runs at pace against fast bowlers, Smith brought his spinners in the game.

Matthew Kunheamann (5/16) and Nathan Lyon (3/35) demolished India's batting order as the hosts were bundled out for 109 in 33.2 overs.

Australia lost Travis Head early in their innings but an incredible 96-run stand by Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne helped them cross the first innings lead.

Ravindra Jadeja led the fightback for India as he picked all four Australia wickets in the day. Khawaja was terrific with the bat but his desire to paly the sweep shot once again ended his brilliant knock.

Peter Handscomb and Cameron Green ensured Australia didn't lose anymore wickets in the final few minutes of Day 1. The visitors will resume the second day of India vs Australia 3rd Test with a 47-run lead in their pocket.

Stumps on Day 1

Peter Handscomb was solid in his defense against R Ashwin in the final over of the day. Australia walk off the field with a lead of 47 and six wickets in their bag.

AUS 156/4 (54 overs) Usman Khawaja 60; Ravindra Jadeja 4/63

16:33 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Jadeja gets the big fish

Wicket!!! Just after getting hit for a boundary, Jadeja bounced back with the wicket of Australia's stand-in captain. A full length ball pitched outside off by Jadeja was enough to induce the outside edge of Smith and this time Srikar Bharat made no mistake behind the stumps.

Steve Smith: 26 (38 balls; 4 fours) c Srikar Bharat b Ravindra Jadeja

16:24 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Smith takes on Axar Patel

FOUR!!! Back-to-back fours hit by Smith against Axar Patel. He pulled one over mid-wicket before squeezing one wide of the slip region.

AUS 140/3 (48 overs)

16:17 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Bharat drops Smith on 9

A nick from Smith's bat deflected Bharat's thigh. It was quite difficult one to collect.

16:12 (IST)1 MAR 2023

India are left with no reviews in this innings

A huge shout for lbw as Jadeja struck Smith on the pads. The umpire didn't gave his consent and after a brief discussion, India opted for the review.
Replays displayed the ball was sliding down the leg side. India have lost all of their reviews in the Australian innings in two sessions.

16:07 (IST)1 MAR 2023

End of Usman Khawaja's knock

Wicket!!! Khawaja attempted to play the sweep shot off Jadeja who bowled a bit of extra bounce. Shubman Gill took a great catch in the deep to end Khawaja's stupendous innings. Once again the sweep brought curtains on Khawaja's innings.

Usman Khawaja 60 (147 balls; 4 fours)

16:02 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Smith hits a crackling shot

FOUR!!! A fabulous shot from Steve Smith to get his boundary boundary in the innings. Full length and pitched wide of the off-stump and Smith drove it firmly past the backward point for four runs.

AUS: 125/2 (42 overs)

15:52 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Australia have a slender lead of 11 runs after drinks breaks. Runs from Khawaja's bat have dried up while Steve Smith is also taking his time to get into the groove. Ravindra Jadeja has more responsibility given that Ravichandran Ashwin is not available to bowl with the possibility of an injury.

15:34 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Australia takes first-innings lead

Steve Smith drove the full length delivery from Ravindra Jadeja toward long-off for a single as Australia enter lead from here on.

AUS 111/2 (37 overs)

15:29 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Jadeja breaks the partnership

Wicket!!! Jadeja persisted with the fuller length deliveries to Labuschagne and once bowled the same length outside off stump, this time a bit low. Labuschagne misread it and lost his defences. Its the end of the 96-run stand between Labuschagne and Khawaja.

Marnus Labuschagne: 31 (91 balls; 1 four)

15:20 (IST)1 MAR 2023

India hand Mohammed Siraj his first over after completion of 33 overs. It tells how much spinners have a role to play in this Test match. Perhaps Ashwin moving back to dressing room after showing signs of pain led Rohit to bring Siraj into the attack.

15:06 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Fifty for Usman Khawaja

Sweetly drove to the sweeper covers to pick up a single. That's 21st fifty for Khawaja in 103 Test innings and second on this tour. A brilliant innings from the Queensland captain to revive the Australian innings.

AUS 100/1 (30 overs)

15:02 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Labuschagne gets his first boundary in unfashionable manner

FOUR!!! A thick outside edge from Labuschagne's bat clipped the flap of wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat's pads and deflected its way to the boundary line behind the stumps. Ashwin wasn't happy with that instance.

AUS 96/1 (29 overs)

14:57 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Labuschagne hss bided enough time after getting cleaned up by Ravindra Jadeja early in his innings. While Khawaja is finding those gaps with intent, Labuschagne is yet to find one. But the partnership is clearly troubling India here.

AUS 95/1 (28 overs)

14:47 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Khawaja hits boundaries against Jadeja right after Tea

FOUR!!! Two boundaries from Khawaja off Jadeja to start the final session of the day. First he flicked toward square leg and later played the reverse sweep past the backward point.

AUS 88/1(25 overs)

Australia spinner Matthew Kunhemann claimed his maiden five-wicket haul while Nathan Lyon picked three to become the second most wicket-taker in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Travis Head in the second over. Jadeja had also cleaned up Labuschagne when the batter was on 0. But the error of overstepping eluded him a big wicket for the third time in the series.

Labuschagne amd Khawaja revived Australian innings as the duo was unseparated at Tea break, adding 59 runs for the second wicket. Australia are 71/1 at the end of second session, still 38 runs behind India's first innings score.

AUS 49/1 (15 overs)

13:42 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Rohit Sharma missed the DRS call

Just like Steve Smith missed the call on Rohit's nick on the first ball of the game, his counterpart made a similar error.

India lost two DRS for lbw calls against Usman Khawaja. R Ashwin had trapped Labuschagne before the wickets and replays showe that the ball was clipping on the middle stump. The psychological impact of losing two reviews forced India to leave one against Labuschagne.

13:38 (IST)1 MAR 2023

India lose their second review

Jadeja once again hit Khawaja on the pads and there was a huge appeal from the Indians. The onfield umpire shaked his head. The replays showed that the ball hit Khawaja on his right leg before hitting the back leg in front of the stumps. The ball was missing the leg stump and India lost its second review in a similar fashion.

13:33 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Four byes for Australia

A boundary for Australia but not from the bat. Khawaja attempted for the sweep shot but missed it and so did Srikar Bharat behind the wickets. India conceded four runs in byes.

AUS 35/1 (8 overs)

13:23 (IST)1 MAR 2023

India lose a review

Jadeja hit Khawaja on the pads but it was down the leg side. India, however, went for the review. The ball tracking confirmed the balls was pitching outside the leg stump and India lost their review ultimately.

AUS 26/1 (7 overs)

13:13 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Labuschagne survives as Jadeja no-ball error continues to haunt India

Ravindra Jadeja had cleaned up Marnus Labuschagne as the batter got inside edge that chopped on the stumps. But for the third time in this Test series Jadeja overstepped while picking a wicket and there is the reprieve for Labuschagne.

13:06 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Jadeja picks the first wicket for India

Wicket!!! Travis Head was trapped in front of the stumps. However, the appeal from the Indians was turned down by the onfield umpire. Jadeja convinced Rohit to opt for the review and the decision went in India's corner. Three reds on the big screen and Head walked back.

Travis Head: 9 (6 balls; 1 four) lbw b Ravindra Jadeja

13:03 (IST)1 MAR 2023

FOUR!!! Head flicked Ravindra Jadeja's full length delivery toward fine leg to hit Australia's first boundary in the innings.

13:00 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Travis Head was a bit aggressive in the first over against Ashwin. Picked a couple of runs twice in the over and some brilliant fielding efforts from Ravindra Jadeja helped to stop a boundary.

AUS 6/0 (1 over)

12:58 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Both teams have walked on the field for the Australian innings. It's Ravichandran Ashwin taking the ball against the two left-handers.

12:52 (IST)1 MAR 2023

India all out for 109

Wicket!!! Axar Patel clipped through his pads toward deep square leg off Lyon. The soutpaw called for a second run but Siraj wasn't that active between the wickets and Travis Head fired a throw at the non-striker's end to run out the Indian speedster.

IND 109/10 (33.2 overs) Virat Kohli 22; Matthew Kunhemann 5/16

12:44 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Kunhemann bags maiden fifer in Test cricket

Wicket!!! Matthew Kunhenamann has claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket after trapping Umesh Yadav for leg-before-wicket. The entertainment from Umesh was brief but helped India to cross 100 runs.

Umesh Yadav: 17 (13 balls; 1 four and 2 sixes)

12:35 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Umesh Yadav right on the song

SIX!!! Umesh does what he does. Loves to come in the lower order and hit sixes for fun. That's what exactly he did. He first slog-swept Nathan Lyon's tossed-up delivery over mid-wicket for six and later cleared the square leg boundary to smash another six against Todd Murphy. A boundary ended the 31st over.

IND 106/8 (31 overs)

12:30 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Kunhemann picks his fourth wicket

Wicket!!! Australians appealed for a stumping chance against R Ashwin but replays suggested that there was a spike on Ashwin's bat as Alex Carey caught it directly. India lose their eighth wicket here and Kunhemann is enjoying this spell.

12:16 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Session Summary in a nutshell

Overs: 26

Runs: 84

Wickets: 7

Run Rate: 3.23

11:43 (IST)1 MAR 2023

That's the end of first session as Australia dominated with their spinners making giant strides. Australia missed to review Rohit Sharma's nick on the first ball. Just when the Indian openers  looked settled against Starc and Cameron Green, Steve Smith brought the spinners into the attack. The move worked as Nathan Lyon and Matt Kunhemann shared three wickets each in the session. Todd Murphy trapped Virat Kohli for LBW. A big job for R Ashwin and Axar Patel to overcome the spin threat. Can they replicate their Delhi heroics here as well? Well stay with us to check on that.

11:30 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Lyon dismiss Srikar Bharat

Wicket!!! Once again the lbw shout from Australia was given not out and they reviewed it second time against Srikar Bharat. The batter went forward to defend with the bat behind his pads, where the ball hit first. Replays showcased that the ball clipped on the leg-stump and Bharat had to walk back. Third wicket for Nathan Lyon in the innings.

Srikar Bharat: 17 (30 balls; 1 four and 1 six) lbw b Nathan Lyon

11:21 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Srikar Bharat goes big

Six!!! Bharat went down on one knee and slog-swept as Murphy bowled him in his arc and the ball was dispatched over the mid-wicket. Some intent from India's lower middle ordet here. Need more like this to overcome the dents served by Australian spinners.

IND 82/6 (24 overs)

11:17 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Murphy ends Virat Kohli's resistance

Wicket!!! There was enough turn from the Australian off-spinner to struck the pads of Virat Kohli. The batter just missed the defence at the wrong line and up went the finger for a huge lbw appeal.

Virat Kohli: 22 (52 balls; 2 fours)

11:05 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Australia lose a review

There was a lbw appeal by Nathan Lyon against Indian wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat. The onfield umpire Nitin Menon turned down the appeal. Australia challenged the decision with a review. The ball tracking showed that the ball missed the leg stump completely and hence Australia are left with just two reviews.

10:51 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Will Virat Kohli make the difference for India?

Virat Kohli has the challenge to turn the tide around from here on. He has looked great so far in the defensive mode against the Australian spinners. Getting the singles and doubles to keep the scoreboard ticking.

10:43 (IST)1 MAR 2023

Close dismissal for Shreyas Iyer

Wicket!!! Kunhemann pitched a back of the length delivery outside the off stump with ball turning low. Shreyas attempted a punch on the back foot but dragged on to the stumps. The umpires checked it through the third umpire and replayd showed that the ball hit slightly at the base of the off stump before flying to Alex Carey.

Shreyas Iyer 0 (2 balls) b Matthew Kunhemann
