Player of the Day Speaks

Usman Khawaja (2/2): It wasn't our intention, I was just watching from the other end and getting him on strike, but it was pretty good to watch. (Gameplan) It was such a nice wicket, I didn't want to give my wicket away. There were times when I wanted to hit them over the top, which is something I normally do in the sub-continent, but just thought "Nah, today you have to try to get me out". So, it was a mental battle more than anything. You have to put your ego away. I wasn't striking very fast, so it was just a battle all day to keep continuing the process all day to keep helping the team out. He (Green) went for the high five and I had the helmet in my right hand. So, we just went in for the hug (to celebrate the hundred). (No warmups this morning) I think the other boys might have been a bit rattled. I've got no superstitions or structure to my warm up. I just go with the flow, so for me it was fine. I kind of enjoyed the warmup. All the coaching staff came out and told me, "this is going to be the best warm up of your life". I think they might be right (laughs)

Player of the Day Speaks

Usman Khawaja (1/2): Look, there was a lot of emotion in that. I've been to India two tours before this and I carried the drinks all eight Test matches. So, it was a long journey. Finally getting a hundred in India as an Australian, that's what you want to tick off. That is very special. (Attacking the new ball) Head took the new ball down intially at the start of the innings and it was the same with Green. He was just hitting them like beach balls. Everything that was out there, he was smacking

Day Wrap

Usman Khawaja batted maginificently to name the first day of the series-decider in Australia's favour. It was a mixture of calmness, composure, hunger, grit and class to remain unbeaten om 104 off 251 balls with the help of 15 boundaries.

Khawaja started the day with an excellent 61-run opening partnership with Travis Head. It was the highest by an Australian opening pair on this tour.

Head pressed the aggressor's button while Khawaja was watchful. India picked the wickets of Head and Marnus Labuschagne just before the lunch break.

Khawaja build on a resilient partnership with skipper Steve Smith. Smith and Khawaja applied the defensive technique on and hit the bad balls for boundaries. The duo ensured Australia did not lose any wicket in the second session.

Smith was once again dimissed by Ravindra Jadeja after the tea interval.  Peter Handscomb joined Khawaja in the middle and played some great shots against shot balls peppered by Umesh Yadav but missed to read the line from Shami and lost his off-stump.

Khawaja found a suitable ally in Cam Green as both managed to hold India at bay with their combination of attacking and solid defense to ensure the visitors didn't lose any wicket further in the day. Khawaja still had the charm to smile when he got his century in the final over. Indian fielders toiled on a flat wicket, which varied from the ones played in Delhi, Nagpur and Indore.

AUS 255/4 (90 overs) Usman Khawaja 104*; Mohammed Shami 2/65

FOUR!!! Fuller length delivery on off-stump and Khawaja hits a sweet cover drive. Khawaja looks unscathed despite losing his partners from the other hand. His wicket in this session will make the difference on who owns the day.

AUS 174/4 (72 overs)

15:16 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Shami sends Peter Handscomb's stumps cartwheeling

Wicket!!! Shami hits the good length area and the ball straightens up while Handscomb attempts to defend it. The Australian batter missed it and the off-stump goes for a dance. Handscomb has failed to convert good start again in this series.

15:08 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Peter Handscomb plays it beautifully

AUS 160/3 (68 overs)

14:57 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Umesh banging in short balls

Umesh Yadav persisting with the short balls. Three against Usman Khawaja and the Australian simply ducks it. Interestingly, the square leg umpire signalled for just one of the three bouncers, the final one.

14:51 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Jadeja accounts the dismissal of Steve Smith

Wicket!!! A flatter delivery from the left-arm orthodox around off-stump. Smith wanted to play it off-side but the ball was straight and induced the inside edge before riocheting the batter's pads and hit the stumps. Another opportunity missed for the Australia No.4 to score big in this innings.

For the first time in his Test career, Smith hasn't mustered a 50-plus score in six innings. Smith's wicket also ended the 79-run partnership with Usman Khawaja for the third wicket.

India vs Australia 4th Test: Second Session Summary

A session completely belonging to Australia with all the ebbs and flows to keep the Indian bowlers at bay.

For the very first time in this Test series there was no wicket taken in a particular session courtesy Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja's sedate approach with the bat.

There was very less area of error where the two played the ball on the wrong line. Smith was more wafchful while playing the spinners and maximised his scoring through singles and doubles.

The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad Stadium is totally the opposite from what the two teams played in the last three Tests and also where India and England played a two-day Test at this venue a couple of years ago.

Khawaja reached his 22nd Test fifty and the third in this innings. He has a great opportunity to convert it into a three-figure score that will take his Test century tally in seven different countries.

The Indian bowlers had a tiresome session as the spinners couldn't aid from the conditions unlike in the other games.

14:09 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Shreyas Iyer rolls his arms in what could be the last over before the Tea break.

14:05 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Already 31 overs bowled and seems like the umpires have allowed for one more over to be played in the second session.

13:52 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Khawaja slaps Axar for four runs

FOUR!!! Short and wide of off from Axar Patel and Khawaja cut it square past cover for his 10th boundary in the innings.

AUS 141/2 (56 overs)

13:49 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Smith's mindset in this innings

A patient and watchful approach from Smith here. Taking no risks or not erring in line to give the Indian bowlers any chance of creating opportunity for his wicket. Have hardly hit the ball with hard hands and just relying on stroke making and strike rotation to tick the runs.

AUS 136 l/2 (55 overs)

13:37 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Smith smacks Shami for four

FOUR!!! Mohammed Shami banged in with the short ball and Smith swivelled across to play an impressive pull shot. Ashwin was placed near the square region boundary but did notice it late. Australia gets four runs here and this was rewarding for Smith for his timing.

AUS: 132/2 (51 overs)

13:30 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Fifty for Usman Khawaja

FOUR!!! A good lentgh delivery from Shami pitched outside off stump and Khawaja leaned across to push the ball past second slip. The southpaw has registered his third 50-plus score in the ongoing India vs Australia Test series.
That shot also brought 50-plus run partnership between Khawaja and Smith.

AUS 128/2 (49 overs)

13:24 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Smith ends the boundary gap for Aussies

FOUR!!! A boundary for Australia after 37 balls as Smith got inside the line and smoothly guided Ashwin's flat and straight delivery toward long leg fence for four runs.

AUS 121/2 (48 overs)

13:21 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Smith running hard between the wickets

Steve Smith picked three twos in the first over of Mohammed Shami after lunch. There were some great placemenents by the Australian batter. Cheteshwar Pujara was the fielder chasing the ball in the scorchy afternoon in Ahmedabad and save some runs for his side.

AUS 116/2 (47 overs)

13:13 (IST)9 MAR 2023

The Australia faltering code in 1st innings

The pattern for Australian batting unit in this Test series has been losing wickets in succession.

Let's go by the last three Tests in 1st innings

In Nagpur: From 84/2 to 177/10

In Delhi: From 167/4 to 227/10

In Indore: Frok 186/4 to 197/10

So what does India need here. A wicket and the not so fancy middle order is likely to crumble.

12:59 (IST)9 MAR 2023

100 up for Australia

Smith takes a single off Ravichandran Ashwin in the 42nd over to take Australia's score to three-figure mark. Khawaja hit one boundary on thr very next delivery. Great approach by the duo to go with their business in this session.

AUS 105/2 (42 overs)

12:54 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Axar is into the attack and is expected to bowl a long spell along with senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Smith has showed a better defensive game against spin post lunch. Although he isn't among the runs but can be a threat for India if he settles in.

12:39 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Smith hits first boundary

FOUR!!! First boundary for the Australian skipper in this innings. Played it late as he banked on the bounce of Umesh Yadav to put it behind the square towards the fence.

AUS 95/2 (36 overs)

12:34 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Surprising to see Axar Patel not asked to bowl in this session. He just bowled one over just before the lunch. Rohit has bowled out overs from Jadeja and Umesh Yadav in tandem. Don't know if Axar would be required to bowl enough overs here.

12:29 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Khawaja looks good against Jadeja

FOUR!!! Khawaja pulled this one behind square on the on-side. The left-hander was quick to react as Jadeja once again bowled in the leg-side area. Two boundaries for Khawaja against Jadeja after lunch.

AUS 87/2 (32 overs)

12:23 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Australia starts strong in first over after lunch

FOUR!!! Just second ball after the lunch breaks and Khawaja paddled it fine for a boundary. Not a great delivery by Ravindra Jadeja, pitching it down the leg.

AUS 81/2 (30 overs)

12:20 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Welcome back to the second session of India vs Australia 4th Test. Usman Khawaja along with stand-in skipper Steve Smith will hopetl to build on a solid partnership from here on. Indian spinners will hope to exert the pressure from the other end. Let's catch all the fun in this upcoming session.

12:07 (IST)9 MAR 2023

Australia did dominate the first hour of the last session but India's experienced bowlers Shami and Ashwin combined to shift the momentum in their corner. So would be fair to say that both teams shared the session.

Session Summary

Australian openers Travis Head and Usman Khawaja started off well after coping against the Indian pace bowlers. Head was agressive among the two and targeted Umesh Yadav particularly with a flurry of boundaries against him.

Ravichandran Ashwin broke Australia's highest opening stand (61) in this series with the wicket of Travis Head. Mohammed Shami doubled the joy for the Indians with the removal of Marnus Labuschagbe with a nip-backer.

Khawaja played some brilliant strokes against Ashwin but returned to the defensive mode at the end of the session.
