It was the visitors that began well thanks to Nasser El Khayati's superb finish in the second minute. However, Adrian Luna got the hosts level after a period of sustained pressure to set up an enticing second half.
Neither side really took hold of matters after the interval. Just moments after Chennaiyin made their substitutions, however, a throw-in caught the visitors our and Luna whipped in a ball across the box to Rahul KP. His shot somehow squirmed under Samik Mitra to put the Tuskers ahead, much to the delight of the Kochi crowd.
Half-chances followed for both sides, but Kerala held on for a priceless win. They remain third with 31 points from 17 matches and are on track to qualify for the playoffs. Chennaiyin, however, are all but out as they are seven points behind sixth-placed Bengaluru FC with three matches to go. They look destined for a third successive season without playoff qualification despite playing much better than they have in the past two seasons.
