Manchester United 2 - 0 Hull City

Comfortable enough win for the home side - Mata and Fellaini with the honours - gave them a win that they never really had to slip out of second gear for. Hull City showed plenty of spunk, but they really need to get some rub of the green when it comes to injuries.

It all started with Herrera swinging it to the left, Martial and Darmian combined to allow the latter to curl in a lovely little ball into the far post, where there was only man who has getting his noggin' to it. Huddlestone tried gamely to kick it away, but Fellaini's header was just too powerful

83' Another superb Snodgrass free-kick causes all sorts of confusion in the penalty box, but United scramble it away for a corner. Form that particular set piece the process is repeated, but this time the home side scrambles it clear and up the field.

82' Rashford burns Mason with a scorching turn of pace, but his cutback into the six yard box finds only Maguire! OH MY this kid is fast!

80' Martial, Rashford and Lingard almost combine with their youthful exuberance, but Jakupovic slides into to take the ball off the feet of the latter.

79' Again nothing comes off the corner proper, but Pohba sends it back in and it's headed away - but only to Valencia. The Ecuadorian lifts it deep to the bushy headed Belgian that's gamboled on, but Jukopovic reads it well.

78' Valencia goes on a marauding run again, and it's yet another corner. Mourinho thinks 1-0 is enough and takes off the Special 'Juan' and sends in his favourite- Marouane Fellaini

75' Sean Maloney has a pop from twenty-five yards. It ends up nearer the corner flag than De Gea's goal. Have to applaud Hull's showing here though - they have shown plenty of fight, and have played some decent football.

72' Rashford wins a freekick just on the edge of the box. Paul Pogba doesn't have Ibra to contend with here, and he looks set to take it.

68' Pogba with a singularly brilliant outside-of-the-bloody-boot crossfield ball to Valencia - Paul Scholes is the one doing the smiling now - and United have a corner. They do nothing with it, but Valencia wins a corner after he powers down the edge of the box.

66' Valencia with the unforgivable error despite being able to look across the backline - Mourinho is livid, and for once it is not with the referee

65' Pass-pass-pass-pass go Manchester United. Louis Van Gaal is beaming watching this from somewhere. This particular move breaks down after the ref adjudges Rashford to be offside.

64' Meyler pings it in after a smooth passing move that involved almost all of the Hull outfielders, but Diamonde can only find the top tier of the stand with a spectacular looking acrobatic effort.

57' Mkhitaryan runs at the Hull City defence again, and tries to play in Wayne Rooney - but Huddlestone does well to stop it.

Juan Mata is the man is he not. The ball is pumped in and it pinballs around till that sneaky little Spanish elf runs in behind and taps it in from three yards. For an attacking midfielder, the man is quite the poacher

54' United try the same trick once again Full back flies forward <Valencia> and passes it to a midfielder at the edge of the box <Pogba> and the shot is charged down.

53' Tony Valencia does exceptionally well to win a corner that United waste once again with an intricate touch too many.

50' United win a corner but nothing comes off it. Hull try to break but Pogba finds Rooney with a peach of ball that Rooney runs onto with ferocious intent. The great man smacks it just wide of the far post. *whistle* that was CLOSE!

49' Ooo nice move from Hull. Sam Clucas tries to angle a cross into the far post from the edge of the box, but Diamonde does not see it coming and it runs harmlessly out of play

46' Phil Jones does superbly to stop Abel Hernandez in full flow before launching a counter. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford run onto a hopeful long punt, but a loose touch from the Armenian allows Jakupovic to gather. Great chance!

Manchester United are a frustrated lot as Hull City have put up a superb fight that would make their new gaffer mighty proud. There's still 45 minutes left though and everyone in red will dread facing their manager if the score remains the same at Full time.

48' Mkhitaryan goes on another rampage that takes him from one end of the penalty box to the other (horizontally) before laying it off to Valencia. The full backs cross is deep into the box, but nothing comes offf it

47' Hull have other ideas though, and Clucas stops a Pogba run with a neat tackle

46' Four minutes added on, and United want to got into the half with a lead.

45' Hull are holding their own and much more, but Mkhitaryan is an altogether different level. The Armenian gets the ball and hops on his scooter as he rips into Hull's midfield - instead of shooting, though, he passes it to Rashford but the young man can't control it. He wasn't expecting it. and why should he - they don't teach passing like this in any football academy... what a learning experience it is for Marcus

43' Pogba has another pop at goal - this time a curler with his left foot - but Jakupovic is comfortably behind that. The Frenchman hasn't got the radar right on that dink pass of his either - another of those cute little things runs out of play before Mkhitaryan can get a toe to it.

41' OH MY WOW. Valencia has a left foot! The Ecuadorian swings it in with that weaker foot of his and Pogba should, by all rights, be burying that. He inexplicably lets it go, though, and Rashford behind him - not expecting that - has no chance of doing anything with it.

40' Harry Maguire goes diving in on Mkhitaryan, but he doesn't have a prayer of getting the ball. He does get the player, though and it's a freekick in a nice little area

39' United are playing well, but it's all unravelling just as they enter the final third. This time another Pogba dink has too much power on it for even the speed of Rashford to catch up with.

37' Clucas and Hernandez combine to stop Pogba - illegally - and United can build from the back all over again. A loose touch from Rashford puts paid to that.

36' Unusually the visitors play it short, and the initiative is totally lost. Snodgrass tries to cut in and shoot, but shooting across the angle, he can gather no power in that shot

35' What an anticlimax - after a buildup that included Old Trafford holding its collective breath, the Scot hammers his freekick straight at the wall. He has a chance to redeem himself though as Diamonde wins a corner off Pogba.

34' Freekick in Snodgrass territory. The men in red really need to maintain their discipline.

31' Herrera decides enough is enough and goes on a meander down the middle that wins him a corner. He wastes all his good work by smacking it straight into the Manchester sky after the corner comes to nothing.

30' Snodgrass stands over a freekick in the United half. This is Hull's best hope for something - and they almost do it! The Scotsman ball pinballs around the box before DIAMONDE HEADS IT AGAINST THE POST!! OH MY!!! The ref had raised his flag for offside anyway (it didn't look it)! United need to be careful about conceding fouls anywhere in their own half. That Scottish left foot is magic!
