Their spinners brought them back in the contest after Mumbai Indians got off to a solid start early on, and Ajinkya Rahane played a gem of a knock to build the foundation for the run-chase. Ravindra Jadeja: When we were bowling the odd ball was spinning. Me and Mitch kept talking between overs to bowl in good areas. We knew they have big power hitters and if we went here or there we could get hit for runs. Every time we come here the wicket plays different. Sometimes it's very flat, sometimes sticky and sometimes dry. We have to prepare and then make up our minds. If he (Santner) starts bowling he comes and tells me how to bowl, whether to bowl slow or give it more air.

Here's what Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni had to say: The win feels good. Not to forget that we lost Deepak in the first over. He has been our new ball bowler. Magala, it was his first game. It was a challenge to shuffle the bowlers and whom to bowl when. The good thing was that the spinners bowled really well. Initial 6-7 overs it wasn't turning much and they were able to play the big shots. After that it started to turn a bit. And the fast bowlers came back well - Magala came back well in the last few overs and Pretorius was good. Overall, it was a very good bowling effort. To come back and restrict them to 160 was a very good effort. (On Tushar Deshpande) We believe in him. Also, what happens is when you're new you have a different sort of pressure. When you've played the IPL for a few years it's a comeback and that's a different sort of pressure. He's very good at execution but the last few games he had bowled a few no balls. That's not a good feeling but he had a fantastic domestic season. The delivery that got Rohit out was a fantastic ball. He has the potential but he can be more consistent. (On Rahane) Me and Jinks spoke right at the start of our practice for CSK. He was simple and asked what I was looking from him. He has that ability to manipulate the field and is technically very sound. I told him to go and enjoy and not take stress. I told him he might not get the first game but when he gets a game we'll back him. I feel all the games are important. The first target is always to win enough games to get into the Qualifier and depending on where you stand in the league table always helps but that's too far ahead. The first thing is to look at the problems in front of you, solve them and win enough games.

Ajinkya Rahane (61 off 27 balls): Really enjoyed it. I only got to know I'm playing before the toss. Unfortunately, Moeen was unwell. I was batting really well in the nets, and also had a good domestic season this year. (On his knock today) That's my strength. I rely on my timing and that's all I wanted to back, instead of looking to slog it over. (Being ready for an opportunity) It's all about being prepared every time you're playing, you have to be ready. IPL is a long tournament, you never know when you get the opportunity. It's all about knowing your game, visualizing, and taking the opportunity. (Playing on his home ground) I haven't played a Test match here yet. I would love to play a Test match at the Wankhede. I know the wicket really well, if you play your proper cricketing shots, you'll get value for your runs. (On inputs from MSD and Fleming) The important thing about them is the freedom they give to each and every individual. When I came to CSK, they told me to prepare well. Luckily, I was ready. I visualize every time, and luckily, it paid off well.

Here's what Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma had to say: We lost our way in the middle, and didn't capitalize on the start we got. It was a good pitch, and we were 30-40 runs short. Got to give credit to their spinners. They kept us under pressure. You need to try out different things and attack, be brave. We have a couple of guys who are young. We've got to give some time to them. All we can do is back them and show enough trust in their ability. That's what we're trying to do. (Senior guys having to step up) Spot on. The senior guys need to step up, starting with me. We know the nature of the IPL. You have to get some momentum and if you don't it's tough. It's only two games, so all is not lost, but yes, some of the senior guys need to step up. You can win a few on the trot but if you lose, it's so hard to get momentum. We have to get out of this losing streak. I couldn't call it a streak, but we have to get the results. We're trying to figure it out. Things we're talking about in the dressing room, we haven't been able to execute on the field. So, it's about finding a way to do that. (Learnings from last season) We know we had a very disappointing last season. You start fresh. Even when we won the 5 trophies, we never thought about winning that. Every opponent is quality, and they will punish you. You can't change too much about it. We can learn from what has happened in these two games, and bring those learnings out on the field.

Chennai Super Kings win by 7 wickets with 11 balls to spare

The wicket wasn't the toughest to bat on, with the ball coming on to the bat well enough. But there was a lot of movement on offer for the pacers, and Devon Conway found out about it the hard way. He ended up chopping on to his stumps off Jason Behrendorff off the fourth delivery, and the Mumbai Indians were really upbeat after that.

But then, Ajinkya Rahane went on to stun possibly everyone at the venue and beyond with one the most elegant display of T20 batting you'll see! As soon as he found anything too short, full or wide outside off, he latched onto them without ado! Rahane just kept going, struck the ball sweetly and went on to register the fastest half-century in this year's IPL!

By the time Rahane departed for a 27-ball 61, the equation was heavily in favour of the Chennai Super Kings. Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad went on to knock it around for a bit, Dube found the boundary every now and then. The lanky left-hander helped bring the required rate to under 6 before departing. That helped Ambati Rayudu, subbed in place of Deepak Chahar, bide his time, see off the spinners, before finishing things off with a series of boundaries.

And that is that! The Chennai Super Kings win by 7 wickets with 11 balls to spare! The crowd were yearning to see an individual with the name 'Dhoni' on the back of the shirt walk out to bat, but that's for some other day! Ambati Rayudu was stuck against the spinners towards the latter stages of the chase, but once he got some pace on the bat, he went on to find the boundary twice, bring the target down to single figures. Rayudu then went on to smash the winning runs as well, thumping Arshad Khan past the cover region for a boundary!

Just 5 runs needed off the last two overs. The fact that the Chennai Super Kings have taken the game to the final couple of overs might not be too pleasing for their think tank.

Back-to-back boundaries from Ambati Rayudu! Clearly, he loves pace onto the bat at the moment! The equation for the Chennai Super Kings has been brought down to single figures now.

The required rate remains at 6 an over. Rayudu doesn't seem to find the big strokes at the moment. Jason Behrendorff will be bowling the 18th.

Time-out! Piyush Chawla bowled a tidy over, his last of the night. Just the one off it. The Chennai Super Kings will probably look to knock off these runs within the next over and a half, which'll help their Net Run Rate as well.

The crowd broke into chants of "We want Dhoni" towards the end of the 15th over. Perhaps he'll walk in at the fall of the following wicket and provide the crowd with what they want? Chennai Super Kings need 24 off 30.

Dube's entertaining cameo comes to an end! The ball skidded onto him as he looked to cut Kartikeya past point, but ended up inside edging the ball onto his stumps! Ambati Rayudu is the next man in, he has been substituted for Deepak Chahar.

A humongous six from Dube gets the required rate under 6! Chennai Super Kings need 33 off the last six overs!

The Mumbai Indians spinners are trying to contain the runs as much as possible, but the damage done by Rahane early on was a bit too much for the hosts tonight. Dube latched onto a loose delivery from Shokeen in the previous over and found the boundary. The required rate is just over 6 at the moment.

Gaikwad and Dube knock the ball around and keep the scoreboard ticking. Chennai Super Kings reach 97 at the halfway stage. They need 61 off the final 10.

Piyush Chawla gets the big fish! The ball turned away from Ajinkya Rahane as he looked to punch the ball down the ground, but ended up holing out to Suryakumar Yadav at long on. What an innings it has been from the Mumbaikar against the franchise from Mumbai, though! Shivam Dube is the next man in as Cameron Green returns to the attack.

Rahane and Gaikwad see Kartikeya's first over out in singles. Chennai Super Kings are in cruise control at the moment, the score being 74 for 1 after 7 overs.

There has been a substitution from the Mumbai Indians- Tim David heads back to the dugout, Kumar Kartikeya replaces him and is introduced into the attack.

Chennai Super Kings end the powerplay with 68 on the board. Ajinkya Rahane has just done the unthinkable - complete a 19-ball fifty! He has made a remarkable return to this format, and has looked all class while doing so! A time-out has been taken as the Mumbai Indians re-group and have a serious discussion among themselves.

Ajinkya Madhukar Rahane, what are you on to today?! He unleashed some glorious boundaries off his blade in that over! 5 out of the six deliveries of that 4th over from Arshad Khan went to or over the ropes! The left-armer started off the over with a half volley down leg, Rahane dispatched it into the stands at deep square, and followed it up with four glorious successive boundaries, peppering the off-side field! Chennai Super Kings are 44 for 1 after the 4th over as Cameron Green comes on to bowl!

The two left-arm pacers have found plenty of movement back in to the right handers. Rahane and Gaikwad, though, have been really watchful. Rahane latched onto a short delivery from Behrendorff and dispatched it into the stands off the fourth delivery of the previous over. Chennai Super Kings are 21/1 after 3 overs.

First six of the innings! Behrendorff dropped one short to Rahane, who hopped onto his back foot quickly and pulled the ball into the stands at deep square!

Ruturaj Gaikwad survived a close call towards the end of the 2nd over. There was some inside edge onto pad as he looked to play straight to an incoming delivery from left-arm pacer Arshad Khan. Chennai Super Kings are 12 after 2 overs.

Conway chops on off the fourth delivery of the first over! Jason Behrendorff troubled him quite a lot in the first over, beating him on a couple of occasions, before getting him to chop on to a climbing delivery at a good length! Ajinkya Rahane walks in at the fall of the first Chennai Super Kings wicket.

Right then! We are now back for the run-chase. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway wait at the boundary for the umpires to lead the players onto the field. The Mumbai Indians players are in a huddle, having a few words among themselves before dispersing onto the field.

Here's what Chennai Super Kings' Mitchell Santner said at the innings break: It's probably a little bit below par. It's just starting to spin a little bit with the slower balls holding in the surface. Started off a little flat. It was skidding on quite nicely and that length was important. We saw a couple grip and we changed our plan to go slow and add some overspin into it. Jadeja was really good. It's awesome (the atmosphere). First time after a few years, we got to play at home and coming here, it's a cracker crowd. It's pretty loud out here, definitely different to New Zealand.

Mumbai Indians: 157/8 after 20 overs

Mumbai Indians end the innings on a high! A flurry of boundaries from Hrithik Shokeen get them past 150. They finish on 157 for 8 after the end of 20 overs. Over to their bowlers now! It won't be an easy task, given that the total seems a bit below par judging by the start that they got, but their spinners will have an important role to play!

Magala changed his pace up quite a bit as well, and kept the batters down to singles! Mumbai Indians are 141 for 8 going into the final over of the innings!

Just the four runs off the penultimate over from Pretorius as he mixed things up. bowling to Piyush Chawla and Hrithik Shokeen.

Tim David departs! He is livid with himself! The last ball of the over was in the slot, David looked to swing across the line but ended up holing out to Rahane in the deep! He was just starting to find his mojo, smashing a couple of sixes and a boundary in between, but now, his cameo comes to an end! Mumbai Indians get to 131 with 3 overs remaining in the innings!

Dwaine Pretorius leapt and took a steepler at long off, but he needed someone in front of him to complete the catch as he was losing balance close to the boundary ropes. Ruturaj Gaikwad came to his aid as he parried the ball back, and Tristan Stubbs now has to depart! Hrithik Shokeen is the new man in as Tushar Deshpande returns to the attack. Mumbai Indians are 113 for 7 after 16 overs.

Timeout. Chennai Super Kings have pulled things back in sumptuous fashion by putting a strangle on the Mumbai Indians innings. Plenty to do for Tim David and Tristan Stubbs. Both are big hitters, though, so this can still go either way.

Just three runs off the 14th over from Pretorius. He kept it on a good length, wide outside off stump towards the end of the over, making Stubbs chase after the ball. But the South African couldn't get any bat on ball.

Tilak Varma has been given out LBW, but he reviewed the decision straight away! He looked to play across the line to Jadeja, but the ball struck him on the pads. Ultra-edge confirmed that there was no bat involved, and the ball-tracking showed three reds! That is a big, big blow for the Mumbai Indians, Tilak departs with the score on 102 for 6 after 13 overs! Tristan Stubbs is the new man in.

Two quiet overs pass by as Santner and Jadeja continue to apply the squeeze on the Mumbai Indians middle order. Mumbai Indians are 87/5 after 11 overs as Dwaine Pretorius replaces Mitchell Santner.

Santner got a second wicket! Arshad Khan looked to play across to a straighter one, missed it completely, and the umpire gave him out LBW! Tim David is out there with Tilak Varma now. Mumbai Indians are in desperate need of a partnership.

The umpire had to take evasive action as Green absolutely smashed a full delivery outside off stump, but the bowler, Ravindra Jadeja didn't flich one bit! He stuck his arms up, the ball lodged right into them, and now, Cameron Green has to depart! Mumbai Indians suddenly find themselves in a sticky situation - they are at 73 for the loss of four wickets as we head into a strategic time-out!

And the Dhoni Review System yields another wicket for the Chennai Super Kings! Suryakumar Yadav has to depart, caught behind by the maestro off Mitchell Santner! He looked to sweep one that was going down leg, ultra-edge suggested that the ball just about brushed the glove, Dhoni was confident, he reviewed straight away, and now, the Mumbai Indians are in a bit of bother! Tilak Varma has joined Cameron Green in the middle now.

The umpire has turned down an appeal for a caught behind, but MS Dhoni has reviewed it! The fact that the CSK skipper looked confident enough to send it upstairs tells a story in itself....

The bowling change works for CSK! Jadeja bowled a quicker delivery on a length just outside off stump, Kishan looked to heave the ball down towards long on, didn't get much timing on it, and holed out to the man there! Suryakumar Yadav has joined Green in the middle.

Ishan Kishan seems to have taken the mantle of attacking over from his skipper! He absolutely tore into Magala as the South African came in to bowl his second over, dispatching him for successive boundaries! Mumbai Indians end the powerplay with a run rate of over 10, their score being 61 at the end of the powerplay!

Having been struck for a boundary early on in the over, Tushar Deshpande comes back with a bang! He troubled KIshan with some movement off the air and the pitch, and produced an absolute peach to get rid of the dangerous Rohit Sharma! What a delivery it was, it rushed through, straightened a bit, caught Rohit on the crease and lit up the stumps! Cameron Green has walked out to bat. Santner will replace Magala for the 5th over. MI are 38 for 1.

It hasn't been the best of starts to his IPL career for Sisanda Magala. The pressure of playing an away game is too much for him - he strayed in line and length, and Ishan was onto them in a flash! The left-handed pocket-sized dynamo is level with Rohit Sharma's score now, both are batting at 14!

The ball is swinging a few metres off the air today! Rohit has looked to attack all this while, he has played and missed on several occasions, but the runs are coming for the hosts! Sisanda Magala will be handed the ball now.

Two confident boundaries for Rohit Sharma in the first over. He was nonplussed with the extravagant away-swing from Chahar, he looked to go over the top twice, and found the boundary with success. Chahar has walked off the park after bowling the first over. Subhranshu Senapati has been summoned in as a substitute. Tushar Deshpande will bowl the second over.

With one ball left in the first over, the physio has rushed out to attend to Deepak Chahar. The CSK pacer seems to have a problem with his left hamstring. Rohit Sharma smashed a boundary off the third delivery, having charged out of his crease. Good signs for MI, not so good for CSK.
