02:15 (IST)9 AUG 2024

That brings to an end our coverage of this Javelin Throw Final. Very early on, Arshad Nadeem stunned everyone watching with a monstrous, record-breaking 92.97 m throw. The Pakistani athlete was easily the best on the night, with three of the top four throws coming from him.

Neeraj Chopra, despite playing with a minor groin niggle, managed to produce a stunning 89.45 m attempt on his 2nd throw, and that was enough to secure silver, India's first in this Olympics.

Despite the obvious disappointment, Indian fans will be heartened to see the high standards Neeraj sets for himself that even a silver medal against a dominant opponent feels underwhelming. He's certainly made his country proud once again by securing medals in consecutive Olympics.

On that note, we bid you goodbye. Good Night!

02:09 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Right then, we've received official confirmation that the medal ceremony for the Men's Javelin Throw event will be held at 10:30 PM IST later today(9th August), and we're all one sleep away from watching Neeraj Chopra getting felicitated with the silver medal.

01:43 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Hang around just a little longer for the medal ceremony, which is scheduled for 2 am IST! The first time at the Paris Olympics that an Indian will be stepping onto the Silver medal spot!

01:19 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Arshad Nadeem a class above while a frustrated Neeraj still secures Silver

Arshad Nadeem, are you kidding me?! He wraps up his gold medal win with a massive 91.79 m throw, and while it's not enough to beat the Olympic Record he set only an hour ago, he takes home the Gold Medal in the most dominant manner possible!

He was the only athlete who made any real progress in that final round, with none of the others crossing the 85 m mark.

Lassi Etelatalo's last throw isn't up to the mark, with Keshorn Walcott opting not to throw. Julian Weber also walks off with a shake of the head as his final throw is not enough to beat his best of 87.40, and the three athletes take the 8th, 7th, and 6th place finishes respectively.

Kenya's Julius Yego's last throw isn't a great one either, but he'll be pleased after reaching his Personal Best of 87.72 m in this Final, finishing 5th in the end,

Jakub Vadlejch can't beat Anderson Peters' 88.54 m, and by a narrow margin, the World No.1 misses out on a bronze medal finish, finishing 4th instead. Anderson Peters' final throw is a sub-85 m one, but he takes home the bronze medal.

Neeraj Chopra walks away with the silver medal despite putting in only one legal throw in the Final, but that 89.45 m second throw was enough to secure silver for India's Golden Boy.

He was frustrated for the most part, but it's still an achievement he should be proud of, and he becomes India's first silver medalist of the Paris 2024 Olympics!

01:15 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Arshad Nadeem on his knees after another incredible 90m-plus throw at 91.79m!! He is your OLYMPIC CHAMPION and deservedly so!

The only man to hit 90m-plus tonight. And he did it twice! He was certainly competing with himself and congratulations are in order!

01:13 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Carrying the hopes of millions, Neeraj Chopra took that FINAL, measured run-up, but it was NOT TO BE!

The Indian only manages a near-80m throw, but steps over the line in disappointment.

SILVER for Neeraj Chopra and Nadeem takes GOLD!

01:11 (IST)9 AUG 2024

BRONZE confirmed for Peters Andersen as he fails to match Neeraj Chopra's 89-plus throw in his final attempt,

The Indian's FINAL SHOT at GOLD coming up next!

01:11 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Julian Webber and Julius Yego were also far from their best and could not improve their standings of fifth and sixth.

Jakub Vadlejch also had one final chance to get back into the podium race, but failed to do so, finishing in heartbreaking fourth. So no medal for the Tokyo silver medallist.

01:09 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Keshom Walcott has chosen not to take the final throw so he will finish outside the medallists. Meanwhile, Lassi Etelatalo bows out in the eighth position with a final throw of 81.69 m.

Before we move into the final round, take a quick look at the thunderous applause that Neeraj received at the start of the event 👇

01:05 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Neeraj misses third throw in row as Arshad inches closer to Gold

Arshad continued to do rounds around the field, with a certain laser focus in his eyes. The fifth to eighth place throwers failed to make any changes in the standings and the medal contenders have really begun to separate themselves from the crowd.

Jakub Valdejch has his chance at improving on Peters Anderson’s current Bronze Medal place throw of 88.54 m, but he fell way short with sub-85 throw.

Neeraj, knowing he had to do something, took a few extra deep breaths but even the tension was clear as he went over the line for the third consecutive time. Just one more throw and things are beginning to slip out of the Indian’s hands.Nadeem’s 84.47 m paled in comparison to his second round heroics.

FINAL ROUND coming up

01:04 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Neeraj Chopra up next, really pumping himself up before this all-important throw!

Ohh, that's a hat-trick of Foul Throws from Neeraj Chopra. Dear o dear, he's hit a bit of a lean patch here, once again losing his balance and slipping past the foul line.

His stellar 2nd throw still sees him in the silver medal position, but winning gold seems a far cry from here.

Arshad Nadeem effortlessly registers a throw close to the 85-m mark, and he still leads by a massive margin and is 8 throws away from becoming an Olympic Gold Medalist!

01:01 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Solid throw from Anderson Peters as he gets an 87.38 m one in, and he retains his 3rd place position for now.

Jakub Vadlejch's throw isn't a bad one, but it's just short of the 85-m mark, and way off what he needs to reclaim the bronze medal position.

00:57 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Keshorn Walcott hasn't really got going since his first throw, and a dismal 76.86 m sees him languishing at the bottom. Lassi Etelatalo forfeits his throw before Julian Weber throws his best of the night with an 87.40 m. Unfortunately for the German, he is still 1 m away from the bronze medal positions.

Julius Yego is also unable to better his 87.72 m with his fifth throw, and time is running out for all the athletes looking to better their positions.

00:56 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Social media too has plenty to say about Arshad Nadeem’s heroics, check out some of the best reactions right here 👇

As we enter the home stretch, take a closer look at the moment that made Olympics history 👇

00:54 (IST)9 AUG 2024

No real movement in Round 4, with Peters Anderson edging into the Top 3.

After a sapping first three rounds, it's going to take a lot from these athletes to produce throws that can really challenge for a medal, and the first of those throws comes from Peters Anderson, who moves into the bronze medal position with an 88.54 m, and it's only him who showed any real intent in Round 4.

The first two throws in Round 4 are disappointing ones from Lassi and Keshorn Walcott, nowhere near the top 3. Germany's Julian Weber does better with an 86.85, but it's still not his best of the night.

Despite a promising run-up and release, Jakub Vadljech is unable to keep himself in bounds, leading to a No Throw.

Putting in the penultimate throw of the round, Neeraj Chopra's run-up gives way, leading to his third No Throw of this Final, while Arshad Nadeem has a rare bad throw.

00:52 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Neeraj Chopra with an unclean attempt! The Indian starts the final stretch with a No Throw, but still has two more chances to compose himself.

He will, however, need to pull off something special to top that 92.97 m throw from Nadeem. Speaking of the thrower from Pakistan, casual attempt of 79.40 m, but it does not matter as he stays in Gold Medal position.

00:50 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Peters Anderson dislodges Jakub Vadlejch in the Bronze Medal position with a throw of 88.54 m! The Czech steps over the line and fails to register a throw. He is now out of medal contention!

00:48 (IST)9 AUG 2024

German Julian Webber very nearly improved on his best throw, but stays in sixth with an attempt of 86.85 m. Far from his best with only two throws left to gets things going!

Julius Yego with an unimpressive 84.90 m to stay in fifth,

00:46 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Moving ahead, throwers will be take attempts as per their standings after each round, with the eighth place athlete going first.

Lassi Etelatallo and Keshom Walcott fail to improve on their best throws to stay in eighth and seventh positions.

00:43 (IST)9 AUG 2024

This is how the standings look after Round 3. We now move ahead with the top-8 throwers:

Nadeem reigns, Neeraj stays 2nd as we bid goodbye to 4 throwers

Eyeing another Olympic medal, Jakub registered his best throw of 88.5 m to move into the bronze medal position.

The Czech was followed by a few inconsequential throws and all eyes were Arshad Nadeem and he again nearly touched the 90m mark. Disappointment, however, was written all over his face as he knew that he was in the zone and capable of doing so much more. There’s a certain fire in his eye and opponents, Neeraj included, need to watch out. While other athletes battles to stay inside the top-8 to ensure that they avoid elimination  at the end of Round 3, Neeraj came up with a rather poor throw and chose to step over the line. He stays in second.

Adrian Mardare, Luiz Mauricio, Toni Keranen and Oliver Helander were the four throwers eliminated the end of Round 3.

00:40 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Despite an impressive run to the Final, Brazil's Mauricio Da Silva is also eliminated after a sub-par final throw. Finland's Toni Keranen is also unable to beat Lassi Etelatalo in 8th place and is eliminated, wrapping up Round 3 in the process.

At the end of Round 3, Arshad Nadeem still on top by a mile, with Neeraj Chopra in 2nd place. Jakub Vadlejch's solid 88.50 m takes him in to the bronze medal position.

00:38 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Andrian Mardare's third throw doesn't cross the 80 m mark, and the Moldovan athlete is the first to be eliminated as a result.

Ohh, costly miss for Finland's Oliver Helander, and his final throw isn't up to the mark. The World No. 4's best of 82.54 m isn't enough to beat his compatriot Lassi in 8th place, and he too is eliminated.

00:33 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Right then, Neeraj Chopra will look to better his 89.45 m, and well, he won't be doing that with his third throw. It is a disappointing attempt for him, and he forfeits it, resulting in a No Throw.

He is still in 2nd place.

00:33 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Lassi Etelatalo registers his best throw of the night, with an 84.58 m, moving into 8th place with that one.

A reminder that after this third Round, the bottom 4 athletes will be eliminated! A nervy wait awaits the Finnish athlete here.

00:31 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Arshad Nadeem is mildly chuffed after his third throw, but it's another solid one to be quite fair, as he throws an 88.72 m, which is the third-best throw of the Final so far! What a showing from him so far.

Meanwhile, Julian Weber's really powerful throw ends up a No Throw as he loses his footing at the last moment.

Julian Yego's third throw isn't one to remember, and he voluntarily forfeits it.

00:28 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Solid improvement from the World No. 1 Jakub. He throws an 88.50 m to move into the bronze medal position. The race is well on here!

Disappointment for Peters Johnson, however, as he is unable to retract his foot in time from the line, resulting in a No Throw.

Keshorn Walcott,
who started off with the best throw in Round 1, can only manage a 82.89 m.

00:26 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Arshad with a Bolt out of the Blue, breaks the Olympic Record, Neeraj leads the chasing pack in second place

Well, the story of Round 2 has to be Arshad Nadeem's humungous throw that set a new Olympic Record! After not being satisfied with his run-up in the first Round, he shatters the Olympic Record with a massive 92.97 m. Where did that come from, my word!

Keshorn Walcott also registered a strong second throw, moving provisionally to the top with an 87.87 m before being unseated by Arshad Nadeem.

The Pakistan athlete's throw really got the others going, with Yego Julius and Julian Weber both breaching the 87 m mark immediately, with the former achieving his Season's best in the process.

Neeraj Chopra
wasn't about to let his close friend and rival Arshad have all the fun and gets a solid 89.45 m throw in to move up to second place, but he still has to do a lot better and break more records if he wants to win back-to-back gold medals.

The rest of the pack is still yet to find their footing, and after a quiet Round 1, a massive Olympic Record-Breaking throw from Arshad Nadeem sees this Final come to life.

00:24 (IST)9 AUG 2024

A mediocre couple of attempts from Adrian Mardarre (80.10 m), and the Finnish trio of Lassi Etelatolo (77.6 m), Oliver Helander (82.6 m) and Toni Keranan (75.33) put them at the risk of elimination.

Remember only the top-8 move ahead after Round 3! Big few throws coming up!

00:20 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Neeraj knows that he has his work cut given just how well Nadeem has done. The defending champion get the second best throw of 89.45 m to put him in Silver Medal position!

A nod of approval from the poster boy of Indian athletics as he continues to pump himself up.

00:19 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Possibly stunned after Nadeem's brilliant second throw, Julius Yego and Julian Webber also put in improved efforts of 87.72 and 87.33. The race to the podium is heating up nicely now.

00:17 (IST)9 AUG 2024

No one would have seen this coming! Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem gets an OLYMPIC RECORD out of the blue. A mammoth 92.97 m to put him Gold medal position!

And this comes after a very poor start where he chose to step over the line!

00:15 (IST)9 AUG 2024

And here comes Peters Anderson! The man from Granada throws the biggest distance yet for an 87.87! Followed by a No Throw from Keshom Walcott.

00:13 (IST)9 AUG 2024

So, Tokyo silver medallist Jakub Vadjlech finally gets some momentum going, a much better throw to post 84.52, which is third best yet.

00:12 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Neeraj registers No Throw in Round 1, Walcott in the lead

The silver medallist from Tokyo and one of Neeraj’s biggest rival in recent years, Jakub Vadjlech, got off to a slow start in that opening round, managing only 80.15 m. It allowed the Keshom Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago take the lead early.

Pakistan’s Arshan Nadeem and German Julain Webber could not register a valid attempt, further opening up the field.

Neeraj, meanwhile, came in hot but was just not able to keep his body in control after the release. His right foot just crossing over the line, rendering his throw invalid.

Throwers in the back half also failed to make a statement throw, leaving Walcott  in the lead with 86.16m

00:11 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Brazil's Mauricio Da Silva Luiz and Finland's Toni Keranen finish off the first round of throws, with both just crossing the 80 m mark, with the latter moving into 4th place with his throw of 80.92 m.

00:09 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Moldova's Andrian Mardare can only start with a 79.14 m, but the World No. 4, Finland's Oliver Helander, gets a decent throw in, moving up to third place with an 81.24 m.

00:06 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Right then, it's NEERAJ CHOPRA TIME!

Well, not the best start for the Indian as his first throw is botched by a late slip courtesy the sheer force he puts into it, and results in a No Throw.

Still plenty of time for the Indian to make his mark here.

00:06 (IST)9 AUG 2024

Kenya's Julius Wego goes next, and a late stumble results in a throw he ideally wouldn't have hoped for. However, he gets a decent 80.29 m to start off.

Finland's Lassi Etelatalo also doesn't get a good start, and he's unable to breach the 80 m mark, finishing only with 78.81 m.

00:01 (IST)9 AUG 2024

It's one of the favorites, Germany's Julian Weber who goes next, but his start isn't great either, and he gets a red flag after stepping beyond the line.

It's a No Throw to start for him as well.

00:01 (IST)9 AUG 2024

It's Arshad Nadeem up next, and he aborts his first run-up. He doesn't seem to be too happy 2nd time around either and puts his foot over the line to forfeit the throw.

00:00 (IST)9 AUG 2024

The first person to cross the 85 m mark in the Final is Trinidad's Keshorn Walcott, who starts off with an 86.16 m throw. That's a great start, and he takes the early lead. That's also his Season's Best!

Dream start for him.
