We'll be back with more action from Euro 2024 tomorrow!
A fortunate rebound and Xavi Simons dragged the leather orb into the bottom right. Maignan stranded. French heads drooped. But the linesman brought a momentary respite, with a raised flag. VAR brought an eternal one. Stuart Attwell, sitted cozy in the VAR studio, opined Dumfries was interfering with play from an offside position.
Eyebrows were raised. But that's all Dutch could conjure. Neither team had a goal them, and just like that Euro 2024 had their first goalless stalemate.
Enough time for a goal. Or maybe two. But considering how the night has evolped, enough for two more skied efforts.
France would feel lucky considering that Simons goal was chalked off. Men in orange have Griezmann to thank for his shabiness in front of goal.
Can he make his impact felt tonight yet again? Depay comes off to make space for him.
Well into the final quarter of the night, there's still no sign of Kylian Mbappe preparing for his substitution. Deschamps has missed his runs down the opposition channels.
Thuram and Dembele come off for Giroud and Kingsley Coman.
Frimpong off for Geertruida, Schouten makes way for Veerman, and Simons replaced by Wijnaldum.
VAR opines that Dumfries was interfering with the play from an offside position and Simons' effort is chalked off. A bit harsh!
Netherlands, against the odds, string together a response. Gakpo plays a pass to Depay, who collects it with his back to the goal before spinning his marker and striking a crisp, low effort. The French net is at Maignan's mercy and he obliges with a sleek stop. But Simons pounces on the rebound, and buries it home.
While the Dutch supporters celebrate, the linesman waves the offside flag and it's time for VAR.
Upamecano clearance from inside the French half falls kindly to Griezmann, who quickly finds Dembélé on the right. Dembélé cuts inside onto his left foot to create a shooting angle, but his curling strike sails over the crossbar.
That's a huge, huge let off for Netherlands. Completely caught out, Marcus Thuram cleverly flicks the ball for Kanté. The midfielder threads a pass through the crowded penalty area to Griezmann. The French skipper's first touch is dodgy, and hence his strike on turn timid. Verbruggen spreads himself well and deflects it behind.
Kounde delivers a superb cross from the right and Tchouameni rises the highest to head the ball. But it's narrowly flashed over the crossbar!
Neither will walk into their dressing room overtly pleased with their performances. Both could've taken a lead. Both could've trailed. But neither do. And that means, there's all to play for in the second forty-five.
As Griezmann walks up to take the corner, there are a few bottles thrown onto the pitch. A bit of a shame. But once we return to the football, the skipper's delivery is timid, and intercepted at the first post.
The Inter forward gets into the thick of things, making a timely run into the penalty area to latch onto Koundé's inch-perfect pass. But a lapse in judgment, and boom! The ball flies high and wide.
The blistering pace of the attacking troika has been causing plenty of trouble for Deschamps' men.
Gakpo cuts in from the left and unleashes a curling shot aimed for the bottom corner. Maignan dives to his left and makes an excellent save. The resulting corner is wasted.
Kante tees up Griezmann but his effort from a close range is wide of the target.
Thuram, with a deft back-heel, finds Rabiot's run into the penalty area. Chaos erupts when Rabiot rather than going for glory nudges the ball towards his skipper. Griezmann, with a gaping goal ahead of him, fails to control the ball, allowing the Oranje defense to eventually clear the danger.
But Verbruggen pushes it for a corner with an acrobatic save.
The Netherlands' quick passing sequence involving Depay and Simons sends through Frimpong, who has been played tonight as a right winger. The Leverkusen star bursts down the flank, stretching the French defense, and aims a low shot towards the far corner. But Maignan's fingertips manage to push it around the post.
We're underway in Leipzig.
So we're over with the pre-match ramble, the players are out in the middle and we're moments away from kick-off!
(All competitions)
Les Bleus have dominated the encounters between the two sides, winning seven of the last eight meetings, including both matches in the qualifying rounds. The Netherlands, under Ronald Koeman, faced numerous injury challenges during the European Qualifiers, which impacted their performance. Similar issues persist as midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners were withdrawn from the squad just before the finals began in Germany.
Despite these setbacks, the Oranje started strong with a 2-1 victory over a Poland side missing Robert Lewandowski, a match where they arguably could have scored more. France, on the other hand, have their own concerns, particularly with Kylian Mbappé, who sustained a broken nose in their 1-0 win against Austria. A bright spot for France in that game was the stellar performance of N'Golo Kanté, who was named Player of the Match for his outstanding contributions in midfield.
The Netherlands boast a formidable attacking lineup, but the key to their success may lie in maintaining possession and creating enough opportunities against a robust French side.
It rarely gets bigger than this. There's France, the birthplace of enigmas who conquered football. At the opposite end? The Netherlands. Land of totaalvoetbal. Les Bleus are synonymous with success. The Oranje, not quite. But they always seem to be just an inch away. Could they bridge that gap tonight? You'll have your answer soon. Let me, Sayantan Guha, your commentator for the evening, take you through what promises to be an enthralling encounter at the Red Bull Arena, Leipzing.
