A goal late in the first half and another late in the second half gives Madrid a win that they really had to scrap it out for. Benzema scored - as he always does. Ronaldo did too - as he always does.

Club America fought hard, but lacked the cutting edge that is required against sides of the calibre of the European champs.

Kashima Antlers, watch out - the trophy gobbling machines that are Zizou, Ronnie and Madrid are on their way.

78' OH! Benzema and Carvajal play some lovely football and the latter runs in behind the defence, but his touch lets him down. Club America counter immediately and William Da Silva outpaces Varane (never the easiest of tasks) and dinks in a teasing cross that flies just behind the onrushing Miguel Arroyo.

77' There are 50,000 + people in the Nissan Stadium right now, and they are being treated to some pretty average fare.

75' Vazquez sends in a teasing little ball that Aguillar outjumps Ronaldo for! Marvellous display of aerial defending being put on by the Mexican here.

60' Casemiro breaks down another America attack and Real counter. Ronaldo carves the Mexicans wide open with a lovely ball to Vazquez. The Spaniard returns it to the Portuguese and he unleashes a missile that Munoz bats away exceptionally well.

59' Modric lays it off to Benzema, who is bullied off the ball by Guerrero with contemptuous ease. He then sprays a glorious Xabi-esque crossfield ball to Valdez down the right, but Marcelo stands his ground.

57' Benzema wastes a dangerous counter by overplaying the pass forward to Ronaldo. Cristiano's look of disgust should be taught in Film Schools. Magnifique!

56' Guerreiro and Romero get in each others' way as they try to race on to a Valdez lay off. They really don't need more people trying to stop them.

55' Valdez bombs down the right and sends it into the box, but Madrid counter at pace - Ronaldo wastes it by hammering it at goal from nigh on thirty yards. May have broken a rib, or two, that.

53' America try to triangulate their way out of trouble, tiki-taka style, but a poor touch from Iborra lets the Mexicans down.

52' Madrid counter, and win a freekick at the other end. Toni Kroos sends in a lovely little ball that is met well by Benzema, but the header thumps wide.

51' America probe again, this time through William Da Silva, but Raphael Varane holds form. The Frenchman fits into that generic description of a smooth defender - a Rolls Royce of a defender - with consummate ease, doesn't he?

50' Ronaldo and Benzema are in on goal with only the goalie to beat, but both of them were well Offside.

47' Club America are in a belligerent mood though, and are in no mood in to lie down and take euthanasia. Thye press ferociously up the pitch till the win the ball back, and attack the Madrid goal with trademark directness.

A Karim Benzema finish has given Madrid the lead, and America will need to move up the gears if they are to hope to have a chance in hell.

There ends the Mexican resistance. Kroos passes it into the path of Benzema, and the Frenchman smacks it right into the roof of the net from ten yards out. WOOF.

44' Marcelo tries to do that by smacking it into the box, butt that man Aguilar is there again to head it brilliantly off the forehead of Benzema. Vital interception.

42' Ronaldo tries an extravagant backheel to Modric but Aguillar is so immensely strong in his challenge. Madrid have flattered, but largely deceived. They need to up the tempo if they are to break down the stubborn Mexicans.
