13:27 (IST)25 MAR 2024

Dhananjaya de Silva, the Sri Lankan skipper, has been adjudged the player of the match, here's what he had to say - Very happy individually and that way I performed heled the team get a win outside Sri Lanka. The wicket had a lot for the seamers and we decided to play tight, Kamindu played really well too. That is what I wanted from the number 7 batter so we can be in the driver's seat. In the second innings, there was not a lot of help for the bowlers but we decided to hit the right areas and have patience. No ideas about the conditions in Chattogram, we will have a look and then prepare accordingly.

13:26 (IST)25 MAR 2024

Najmul Hossain Shanto (Bangladesh captain): The way we played, I am proud of our boys. There are a lot of things to work on, but there are positives as well. The wicket looked good. We have to improve our batting against the new ball, and in the next game, we have to come back strongly. A lot of work has to be done in the next step. We will have a plan when we go to Chittagong for the second Test. (Mominul) played an outstanding innings; we expect him to play like this and stand up for us.

strong>MATCH SUMMARY

Sri Lanka win by 328 runs

Kamindu Mendis 164(237) | Kasun Rajitha 5/56(14)
Mominul Haque 87*(148) | Mehidy Hasan Miraz 4/74(29)

Sri Lanka have handed Bangladesh a shellacking to register their second-largest victory in terms of runs and have taken a 1-0 lead in the 2-match series. Sri Lanka have also registered their first points in the WTC 23-25 cycle.

Well

a lot of things which happen rarely were seen in this match. The Sri Lankan seamers took all the 20 wickets, only for the third time in test match history of Sri Lanka.

Not often do we see twin centuries in a test match, but we saw a pair of twin centuries with Kamindu Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva scoring centuries in both the innings.

On the first morning, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first in cloudy conditions and it looked like it could prove to be a wrong decision when they were reduced by 47/5. But then, the tables turned and how!

Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis got together and stitched a mammoth partnership of 202 runs which completely fliiped the momentum of the game. Both the batters registered their individual centuries in the process as well.

Sri Lanka took the momentum into their bowling as well and helped by some poor batting, skittled out Bangladesh on 188 obtaining a 92-run lead in the first innings.

From there on, it was about driving home the advantage for Sri Lanka and they did so with centuries from the same two men again, a mammoth one of 164* from Kamindu Mendis putting this match beyond the reach of Bangladesh setting them 511 runs to win.

There was only going to be one winner from that point of time and the Bangladesh top order did not help themselves by putting up another dismal batting performance losing half their side inside 9 overs in the third evening.

Mominul Haque, who eventually ended up unbeaten on 87*, delayed the inevitable and offered some resistance in combination with the lower-order but Kasun Rajitha's 5-er acted like a cherry on top for the visitors and made sure that it was not long before Sri Lanka registered a thoroughly dominant and comprehensive win.

13:17 (IST)25 MAR 2024

49.2 Lahiru Kumara to Nahid Rana

THAT WILL BE THAT! SRI LANKA WIN THIS GAME BY 328 RUNS! Harsh bumper on off and middle, comes back in. Rana tries to work it away to the on side but gets rapped on the gloves. The ball goes high up in the air and is taken quite comfortably by the fielder at second slip, Dhananjaya de Silva! That will be that for Bangladesh. Haque remains unbeaten on 87 at the other end!

Nahid Rana c Dhananjaya de Silva b Lahiru Kumara 0 (8b, 0x4, 0x6).

13:16 (IST)25 MAR 2024

49.1 Lahiru Kumara to Nahid Rana

BUMPER on middle and leg! Rana ducks under it and lets it go through to the keeper.

13:15 (IST)25 MAR 2024

Lahiru Kumara [11.0-1-39-1] is back into the attack.

13:11 (IST)25 MAR 2024

No single off the last ball again and that means Rana will be on strike yet again. Mominul has batted really well but some of his tactics of playing with the tail have been dicey, to say the least. Also, it is time for a drinks break!

13:10 (IST)25 MAR 2024

End of over 49 (4 runs), Bangladesh 182/9

Mominul Haque 87(148)
Nahid Rana 0(6)
Prabath Jayasuriya 37/0

13:10 (IST)25 MAR 2024

13:09 (IST)25 MAR 2024

48.5 Prabath Jayasuriya to Mominul Haque

FOUR! POOR DELIVERY PUNISHED! Drifts down the legside. Haque manages to paddle it up and over short fine leg for a boundary!

tossed up outside off, turns back in. Haque eases it to long on and does not take the run.

13:07 (IST)25 MAR 2024

48.1 Prabath Jayasuriya to Mominul Haque

floated on middle and leg, turns back in. Haque works it towards midwicket.

13:07 (IST)25 MAR 2024

So, Rana does manage to survive the entire over from Rajitha. The bowler can be given a lot of credit for that as he slipped half the over down the leg side and made it easy for the batter.

13:06 (IST)25 MAR 2024

End of over 48 (0 runs), Bangladesh 178/9

Nahid Rana 0(6)
Mominul Haque 83(142)

Nahid Rana denies the single after playing the ball straight to the man at short cover, hilarious!

13:04 (IST)25 MAR 2024

47.3 Kasun Rajitha to Nahid Rana

at a length on off, comes back in. Rana leans forward and blocks it to the fielder at cover.

13:04 (IST)25 MAR 2024

47.2 Kasun Rajitha to Nahid Rana

at a length outside off, moves away. Rana leaves it well alone to the keeper.

13:02 (IST)25 MAR 2024

47.1 Kasun Rajitha to Nahid Rana

at a length down the legside, strays down. Rana tries to flick at it but misses it completely.

13:01 (IST)25 MAR 2024

Well, timing the ball too well can come back to bite you too. Mominul wanted the single off the last ball but he timed it too well and got a boundary instead. That will expose Nahid Rana to Kasun Rajitha for the beginning of the next over.

13:01 (IST)25 MAR 2024

End of over 47 (14 runs), Bangladesh 178/9

Mominul Haque 83(142)

12:57 (IST)25 MAR 2024

46.1 Prabath Jayasuriya to Mominul Haque

tossed up outside off, turns back in. Haque punches it down to long on and refuses a run.

Prabath Jayasuriya [7.0-1-19-0] is back into the attack

12:57 (IST)25 MAR 2024

Nahid Rana, RHB, comes in at 11

12:56 (IST)25 MAR 2024

One brings two they say and that is exactly what happened! The end is near for Bangladesh now as they are 9-down, brilliant from Rajitha who has registered a 5-er, his 2nd in Test matches, both against Bangladesh

12:55 (IST)25 MAR 2024

End of over 46 (2 runs), Bangladesh 164/9

Mominul Haque 69(136)
Kasun Rajitha 56/5

12:55 (IST)25 MAR 2024

45.6 Kasun Rajitha to Khaled Ahme

EDGED AND GONE FIRST BALL! FIFER FOR RAJITHA! THE BANGLADESHI RESISTANCE IS CRUMBLING. The polao and korma on Jallarpur Road seem to be closing in for the Lankans. At a length outside off, moves away. Ahmed pokes at it from the crease and ends up nicking it straight to the keeper Mendis, who rolls forward and takes a good catch!

Khaled Ahmed c Kusal Mendis b Kasun Rajitha 0 (1b, 0x4, 0x6).

12:53 (IST)25 MAR 2024

Khaled Ahmed, RHB, comes to the crease.

12:53 (IST)25 MAR 2024

The resistance finally comes to an end, Shoriful wanted to hit that over the covers but ended up offering a dolly to Rajitha. Poor end to what was a gritty effort!

12:52 (IST)25 MAR 2024

45.5 Kasun Rajitha to Shoriful Islam

CAUGHT AND BOWLED! LOOSE SHOT! At a length on off and middle, angles back in. Islam plays a tame shot and ends up hitting it straight back to the bowler Rajitha for a simple catch! Islam will be disappointed with himself for playing this shot when he was batting so well, but deeper questions have to be asked of Haque's complicity in this matter. Why did he take the single off the second ball of this over and expose Islam to Rajitha?

Shoriful Islam c&b Kasun Rajitha 12 (42b, 0x4, 0x6).

12:51 (IST)25 MAR 2024

at a length on off, moves back in. Islam manages to pat it back to the bowler.

12:50 (IST)25 MAR 2024

45.2 Kasun Rajitha to Mominul Haque

short of a length on off and middle, comes back in. Haque shuffles across the crease and works it to deep square leg. A run taken. What is happening? Why did he refuse the double last ball and take a single in this one?

12:49 (IST)25 MAR 2024

45.1 Kasun Rajitha to Shoriful Islam

at a length outside off, slightly full. Islam punches it to wide of cover and picks up a single. There was the chance for a couple but they refused to take it.

12:49 (IST)25 MAR 2024

Mominul survives after Sri Lanka did not realized that they had their man caught behind. Mendis, the keeper, did make a stifled appeal but wasn't supported by anyone else.

12:48 (IST)25 MAR 2024

End of over 45 (5 runs), Bangladesh 162/7

Mominul Haque 68(135)
